Affiliations
Isabella is co leader of a group of displaced, and unique individuals who share a common goal and sensibilities called Atomic Gaslight. They are considerably more retro technology and personality then the standard heroes of Paragon City. She shares the day to day operations of the group with Lieutenant Jane Sladen aka Comet Lady, another displaced woman, from an Atomic age.
Personality
Isabella is a very kind hearted soul. She is soft spoken, with a very refined British accent. She is friendly and prefers to see the good in people she meets. She is prim, proper and extremely well mannered. Isabella is also a genius. She has made some advances in her armor design with a few modern additions, after the briefest of studies. She was an Empire renowned scientist in her own dimension. Isabella is also, obsessive, driven and chatty. She always wants to know how something works, and if left to her own devices she will disassemble something to try and figure it out. She can also be shy and reserved. Her personality is not very commanding, a trait she says Jane has in abundance. When speaking about technological devices, or technology in general she will talk for hours if allowed. She can also be overly analytical. She will often say she rambles.
Powers
Isabella has no super powers of her own. All her abilities come from her Gaslight projectors and her Harbinger armor.
Armored Defense
The Harbinger armor is made of thick plats of brass, inlaid with some steel. It is light enough for her to move about in it, with the clockwork gears help. It affords some protection, but is by no means the strongest substance she could use.
Gaslight Projection System
The Harbinger armor's gaslight projectors allow Isabella to hurl super hot chemicals at her foes in the form of blue/white gaslight. It is extremely hot, and will damage anything fire does. The armor was originally constructed for the battlefield so it is durable and functional. Isabella has fine turned the projection system and it allows for a greater verity of gaslight to be fired from it now, then in its origanl design.
Gaslight Powered Armored Gauntlets
Isabella can keep her gaslight surrounding her fists which, combined with the clockwork strength and metal fo the gauntlets provides a powerful blow. She has been know to even knock enemies back several feet.
Other Abilities
Isabella has installed gaslight projection system installed around her boots, that allows her to fly. She has some updated sensors in her helmet, as well as a system that can conserve power, or boost it for a short period of time. She has tapped into the medi port grid in Paragon, much to the chagrin of those who control it. She is working at refining her control of it. She also stole a Nemesis staff early in her arrival in Paragon, and uses it on occasion.
Weaknesses and Limitations
As stated before, Isabella for all her intelligence is just a human, and not necessarily a very strong one at that. She is a scientist, so has had very little combat training of any kind. Outside of her armor, she is not much of a combat threat at all.
Character History
Doctor Isabella Edison pushed a stray strand of her dark hair out of her eyes, the bulk of its length was pulled into a tight pony tail, but a few errant strands continued to find their way into her field of vision. She stood several feet off the ground, perched on a latter, staring down into an empty suit of brass covered armor, her arms inside the chest plate, adjusting some of the clockwork gears. A look of intense concentration on her lovely face. Isabella was slim, with dark hair and cool azure eyes. She was attractive, some even said stunning. Even with grease streaks on her face and the tip of her nose. She was wearing what she considered her working clothes, a pair of shorts, work boots, a leather jacket and long fingerless gloves, a pair of work goggles were pushed up to her forehead as she didn't need them for the delicate work she was currently performing.
“Doctor Edison?” came a man's voice from the floor of her laboratory. She looked down from her position on the latter and saw a man dressed in Military green of the British Empire's officer corp. She blushed furiously as she realized the state of her appearance.
“Colonel Barrington,” she said, climbing to the latter, running a hand through her hair, attempting to rein in the unruly strands. “I apologize for my appearance sir, I was not made aware of your arrival.”
“Quite alright Doctor,” he said in a professional manner, however his eyes did stray to her bare legs and lingered there for a time. “Your assistant must have forgotten to tell you.”
“Indeed.” Isabella answered through tight lips, her face flushing crimson again as she noticed the colonel's gaze. Her “assistant” Professor Wilfred Jameson was notorious for his “lapses” in memory.
Colonel James Barrington was a large man, standing a little over six feet in height, he had a large frame, with broad shoulders. His dark hair was graying at the temples, and the gray showed in his mustache as well. His dark eyes showed a shrewdness, and his facial expression was one of a man who is not only commanding, but is used to being obeyed. The man before her was everything her coworker Professor Jameson was not.
“Well I know I am a little early, but I wanted to get a first look at your design in action.” Colonel Barrington said, his deep voice carried through the laboratory.
Isabella's eyes opened wide and she looked at the Colonel like he had sprouted another head. “I beg your pardon sir, did you say in action?” She looked around her cluttered laboratory, and at the suit of armor before her, a tight knot of nervousness in her stomach.
“Of course.” he said simply. “I was assured that your Harbinger design was ready for testing. Doctor Edison, I am sure I don't need to remind you of the Hessian's threats of war. Even now their airships fly dangerously close to British boarders. Queen Victoria herself is planning on stopping by to see your armor in action. I came first as a precaution and so I could report to the Queen on your progress. I am not wasting my time, as well as the Empire's Golden Royals on this project am I?”
“Of course not Colonel” Isabella replied, as she looked at the armor. “Give me a few moments for some last minute adjustments, and I will meet you inside it for testing.”
The colonel raised an eyebrow looking at the smaller woman. “You are going to pilot it?”
Isabella's head nodded. “Yes sir, but only the prototype. I know the systems, and I am best equiped to deal with any abnormalities that may occur at this stage. Trust me sir, I am no soldier, I will leave the fighting to those that know it best.”
The colonel nodded and walked over towards the door, only now did Isabella notice the two soldiers standing at attention on either side of it. He stopped at the door and looked back to her. “I will see you in fifteen minutes then Doctor Edison.” and walked through the door, closing it behind him, but leaving the two soldiers in the room. The message to Isabella was clear. Her armor had best be ready now.
Isabella stalked back towards her Harbinger armor, grumbling under her breath. Her assistant had set her up, he knew it was not ready for a field test. He hoped to get her kicked off the project so he could take over. Professor Jameson had never liked a woman being in charge, especially a woman he had to answer to. It wasn't bad enough Isabella had started on the project for the Department of War, right out of the Royal Academy of Science, but to be saddled with a know it all like Jameson was too much. He had an idea for a large steam driven vehicle that he said would inspire fear on the battlefield. A Juggernaut he had called it, had a large cannon in front, tracks and a large steam engine inside. A prosperous contraption if she had ever heard of one. She climbed back on the latter and tried to get her Harbinger Armor ready for a field test.
Twenty minutes later, the Doctor Edison was inside of her Harbinger Armor, standing in an armored room, with several test dummies and a large, thick glass window that overlooked the entire room. Inside the room sat the Colonel as well as some people in plain clothes and the sniveling Professor Jameson. No doubt he was awaiting a spectacular failure so he could come to the Empire's rescue with his invention and get the “silly girl” thrown off the project, if not in jail. 'Well' she thought angrily to herself 'He was in for a surprise.' As Isabella walked in the armor, it made quite a bit of noise, the boot's trend was massive, the steam jets kept venting as she walked forward. She lifted one are and a gout of gaslight shot forth, igniting one of the dummies in blue-white fire. She grinned inside the helmet as she fired another blast and another dummy, it too was consumed. For the next five minutes the Harbinger armor performed exactly as Isabella had always knew it would. She was smiling within the confines of her helmet. When she finished her demonstration she took off the helmet and looked up towards window to see the Colonel nodding at her. However, the look of Professor Jameson made her blood run cold. He sat next to the Colonel, a smug smile on his face. It was at that moment, the Harbinger armor began to vent more steam. Something was wrong, Isabella only had a moment before there was an explosion and everything went white.
The next thing Isabella was aware of a young woman, with blond hair was standing over her. She was garbed in a strange sort of costume. She was wearing a red mask. A mask? Some sort of blue, red and white outfit with golden highlights. She carried a sword and her skirt was scandalously short. Isabella's eye however, were drawn to the huge statue over the young woman's shoulder. It was huge, easily three or four stories tall, a man, with the world upon his shoulders and back. Isabella did not know where she was, but she suspected that she was no longer where she belonged.
Trivia
Gaslight Harbinger was made before the Steampunk pack was even announced, but benefited greatly from its release.
She was originally created after a discussion I had with a friend regarding Bubblegum Crisis and how much I like it, but didn't have a powered armored character.
Isabella's British Empire is ruled over by Queen Victoria, on her Earth the United States split after the South won the Civil War. There is still a Confederate States of America, a Union States of America, a Texas which is larger then the Texas in our world. And California is still part of Mexico, which is more prosperous due to the California gold rush.
