Despite the surname of Vanguard, the family lineage actually has nothing to do with the Vanguard organization headed by Lady Grey.
Character History
The Origins of Gold Vanguard
Timmothy Alexander Vanguard, spawn of the technological "wonderking" Sebastien Ralphion Vanguard and renowned medical surgeon Alexis Morroe Vanguard, was a standard boy genius who had no calling to heroism. He grew a simple, albeit tendered childhood, as a noble and certainly wealthy Vanguard prodigy. He received only the greatest level of education, and he enjoyed the fruits of wealth's labor: archery, private studies, and significant family ties. However, all was not well among the outside walls of the Vanguard mansion beyond the hills of Founder's Falls. Unannounced to the Vanguard family, Arachnos troops coordinated an assault! Recent transgressions of citizens would have that Arachnos was out of favor to the general public of Paragon City, and this was no different for the Vanguard lineage. They were harshly loyal advocates of the Freedom Phalanx and the quest that the noble heroes ensued, and Lord Recluse himself began to take notice of this. As the head chairman of "VANGUARD AUGMENTATIONS INC", Sebastien would go out of his way to meet the rapid demand of the Phalanx for technology and weaponry. This unyielding support frustrated the Spider King, for Sebastien's weaponry helped the Phalanx pave a way to his domain. Thus, on November 20th, 2006, Arachnos Wolf Spiders surged the Vanguard perimeter. With a steady onslaught, they flooded through the halls of the Vanguard mansion, readily dispatching the few hired watchmen. As hastily as they came, the Arachnos minions blazed the mansion and then proceeded to flee the scene as sirens echoed from the valley below. Sebastien, Alexis and Timmothy would later be pronounced dead, each receiving a ruthless execution fit for their actions. At least, this is what Arachnos knew. When the Wolf Spiders combed the mansion during their invasion, they never did truly find Timmothy. So, like the mansion, they took to believing that he was washed away in hungering flames. However, Timmothy was fine! He escaped through the lower access ducts of his father's laboratory that was situated beneath the mansion. These very ducts were created in case of underground fire, but they were never intended for actual use until now. For his own safety, Timmothy was inducted into the witness protection program of Paragon City and his former alias was publicly pronounced dead. So in a traumatized teenaged boy's head, grew vengeful spite. Using his unmatched intelligence and his father's hereditary cunning, he began working on a three year project under the supervision of the law enforcement. Other high-end villain groups themselves began to notice the Paragon Police Department's hunger for extremely advanced technological components. What they didn't know, was that a sixteen-year-old boy prodigy was crafting a medium for his vengeance! When Arachnos took notice of these actions, they scoffed in their belligerent ways. This all fueled Timmothy's mad desire for revenge, and slowly he began the transition from man to hero. Finally, three years later, a functional product eagerly awaited field testing. With a small budding pride, and a lack of emotion, Timmothy immediately donned this suit of armor. "GOLD GEAR", he called it; as he applied a stunning metallic gold finish to the suit. However, only part of his quest was fulfilled. He still needed an offensive tool to comply with his defensive suit. So, he set to work on a much simpler project that matched his previous life's hobby: archery. With three years and two months under his technologically augmented belt, Timmothy now had his mediums of vengeance: a suit of armor and a slender ultralight bow. Together, they formed "GOLD GEARS", a technological duo unsurpassed by terms of complexity. With his haughty temperament and newfound equipment, he demanded that he would be allowed to show his face publicly again. With a sly appreciation from the head of the Department himself, famed hero "Blue Steel" greeted Timmothy in person as he left the massive forte that is the Paragon Police headquarters. Blue Steel only answered Timmothy's presence with the Vanguard family motto that his dad used to say, "Being a Vanguard is more than courage under fire, it's outstanding valor in a City of Heroes". Alas, Timmothy received his final boon, an unbreakable spirit that only a hero could truly master. And with that, Timmothy became "GOLD VANGUAD"!

Timmothy had almost everything he needed. A brilliant mind, unbreakable spirit and truly advanced weaponry. In the eyes of the genius, only one thing was left. Only one trial, to be conquered: Timmothy must inflict his ire to his old foes!
