The Golden Champion is the title character of Tridecagon Software's latest action RPG. The manifestation running around Paragon City is an oddity in that he is an exact duplicate, only obviously not in his environment.

Character Biography

"Adventure awaits in the latest game from famed developer Takanashi Zandou. The Metallic Kingdom is under siege from the Diamond Emperor and his Gemstone Covenant. After the Platinum Princess was captured to be held for ransom, the Titanium King sent his best warrior, the Golden Champion, to save her. With a sprawling set of worlds and a revolutionary dual weapon system, the Golden Champion has dozens of hours of constantly replayable fun."

The Golden Champion has very little backstory to him. By the time the game starts, he's already "one of the best warriors in the world" (although he starts out at level 1) and is quite famous throughout all the worlds. Some inconsistencies arise in the translation, especially where the relationship between the Golden Champion and the Platinum Princess is concerned. He refers to her as his wife when talking with one sidequest NPC and his fiance when talking with another at a further world, but the relationship between them was written out of the American release in order to get an E rating as opposed to E-10 and is reflected in the rest of the game and all the official press materials concerning it. His hometown is also inconsistent in that he was officially raised amongst a nomadic tribe, but he has a "childhood home" in Quarry Town. This is attributed as a translation error, where the house should have been translated as "Golden Children" (a shut down orphanage) instead of "Golden Champion's childhood home", but no explanation was really given to the orphanage, causing confusion amongst the translators.

Worlds

The Golden Champion travels through dimensions at various points in the game. Each of the worlds is linked by the Road of Light. Every world is divided by town and dungeon, with an overworld linking them. They also have a Crystal General that holds a Gemstone Key, each of which are linked to a piece of gear that grants an ability.

The Metallic Kingdom

The starting world is the one where the Golden Champion, Platinum Princess, and Titanium King make their home. It is a traditional medieval society, with castles and nobility. There are five areas in this world. Damascus Castle is where the game starts with the attack by the Gemstone Covenant ending with the kidnapping of the Platinum Princess. Steel City is the first main town and the Mercury Marsh is the first dungeon. Optional areas include Quarry Town and the Abandoned Mines. The Crystal General is the Amber Archer. He holds the Amber Anklet, which gives the double jump needed to reach the door to the Road of Light.

The Tropics

The second world is a set of isles, with a Caribbean theme. There are three towns and five dungeons required to progress, with one optional town and two optional dungeons. The Crystal General is the Amethyst Rider. He holds the Amethyst Belt, which gives immunity to the severe heat of The Underworld.

The Underworld

The third world is an underground world filled with magma. Caves make up most of the structures, with a primitive tribe society. There are two towns and eight dungeons required to progress, with one optional town and dungeon. It is also where the 100 Floor Dungeon is located, but that cannot be accessed until obtaining the Opal Shoulderpad. The Crystal General is the Ruby Dragon. He holds the Ruby Bracers, which allows the lifting of very heavy rocks like the one blocking the cave with the Road of Light.

The Pole

The Sapphire Sorceress.

The fourth world is an ice kingdom. All of the structures are made of ice and there is snow everywhere. There are three towns and three dungeons required to progress, with two optional towns and four optional dungeons. The Crystal General is the Sapphire Sorceress. She holds the Sapphire Boots, which grant the wall walk ability required to get up the ice waterfall into the cave the Road of Light is in.

The Sky

The fifth world is a city in the clouds. It is a Steampunk style society, with lots of brass clockwork machines and airships. There are seven towns and ten dungeons required to progress, with two optional towns and four optional dungeons. The Crystal General is the Emerald Albatross. He holds the Emerald Chain, which grants the glide ability required to get across the huge gap to the Road of Light.

The Future

The Opal Assassin.

The sixth world is a technological society. It is done in a style reminiscent of Blade Runner. There is only one town and two dungeons, with the optional content taking place in them as well. The Crystal General is the Opal Assassin. He holds the Opal Shoulderpad, which allows reversing personal gravity for short bursts of time.

The Gemstone Fortress

The Gemstone Fortress is a large dungeon that is divided into eight sections. The Onyx Garden is the outdoor area that links the other seven sections. There are six "towers", with the names of Amber, Amethyst, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, and Opal Tower. Each of them has a rematch with their corresponding Crystal General and each of those hold a key. After getting all six keys, you can enter the Diamond Stronghold, where you eventually face off against the Diamond Emperor. Defeat him to beat the game.

Real World Biography

Katie Jenkins is an unusual eight year old girl who seemed to be able to affect the world around her. She remained oblivious of her powers for her life until one fateful day. After playing through Golden Champion, she wished her life was just like it. This summoned forth the Golden Champion directly from the game, but it also summoned all the bad guys as well. They reenacted the kidnapping, only with Katie filling in for the Platinum Princess. The Golden Champion, with only the knowledge that the game developers gave him (i.e. very little), is now trying to save her, seeking out the Crystal Generals and the Road of Light (which has appeared somewhere in Paragon City).

One major effect this had was that all copies of the game went defective immediately and despite all the best efforts of Tridecagon Software to remedy this problem, they have been unable to do so. It works perfectly on their development platforms, but all versions which work on the home system are rendered immediately and inexplicably defective. Combined with reports of the Golden Champion and Diamond Emperor sighted in various parts of Paragon City and the Rogue Isles, many fan websites have jokingly claimed that they "left the game" without knowing how close to the truth that really is.
