Backstory

Jonathon "Jack" Ward has been an orphan all his life. Growing up in a number of foster homes left Jack with a troublesome personality that often led him to behave wildly and unpredictably. Jack was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder at a young age, but he was really beginning to display signs of his latent mutant abilities. Jack has hyperactive senses and overactive brainwaves, which tends to make him come across as distracted, bored, and unable to focus to those who don't know him. Quite the contrary, Jack has an eidetic memory and can recall anything he reads, hears, or studies with near 100% clarity. This ability incidentally makes Jack a skilled painter and sketch artist. Jack can also absorb the kinetic energy from living beings and moving objects and redirect them into hypercharged blasts of energy.

Juvenile Delinquency

Jack was never truly terrible in his early teens, but he was frequently in and out of trouble with his teachers at school and with the Paragon Police Department. Due to his hyperactive tendencies Jack was often taunted by his fellow students, enough to where he learned to fight rather quickly and quite well. Jack's eidetic memory also fueled some of the taunting, and to help maintain a lower profile he didn't apply himself too much and often chose to fail subjects on purpose - even though he memorized all of the textbooks and eventually knew more about the subjects than his teachers did. Although he never understood exactly why he could barely hit someone and knock them back several feet, Jack soon became that kid in school the bullies always wanted to beat up - but knew they'd be knocked around silly if they tried. The best anyone could ever do was call him names to try and provoke him, but Jack ignored them and remained a loner for most of his childhood.

The fighting soon led Jack to hurting several kids. On several occasions Jack sent his taunters smashing into walls or down flights of stairs, and when these children started coming home with broken or fractured bones and severe bruises Jack Ward was quickly expelled from his schools. Jack spent a year in a juvenile detention center when he was 15, but due to some legal wrangling from GIFT Jack was identified as a mutant who needed some help controlling his abilities. It was just as well; Jack was already getting into trouble in the detention center for 'throwing other juveniles across the cafeteria' and tossing several correctional officers to the ground when they tried to handle him roughly.

A Fair Chance

Under some instruction and guidance from GIFT, Jack Ward has finally been given a fair chance at having a normal life - at least as normal a life as possible for a young mutant. Jack was enrolled in the Squadron X program where he is finishing up his collegiate level studies as a child prodigy. Jack is far more interested in learning how to develop his potential as a mutant, however, and the notion of a 'career' doesn't stimulate his hyperactive thought process. Jack has taken up the name of Hyperjack and is looking forward to the day where he graduates the Squadron X program and can become the next great hero in Paragon City.
