Marisa, changed to Iris for the move to Virtue, was originally created on Freedom. She was made to be a representation of myself in the game, and had a basic but snappy black pants and red shirt for her first costume. For her second costume I decided I needed something that would actually be a fitting superhero outfit. I love the color red, and experimented with some superhero costumes in red... until I realized she looked better in the rainbow color scheme I'd first tried out on a different character. Slapping the rainbow-blended goodness onto the shiny metallic tights texture with some white accents gave her the iconic outfit she is now somewhat well-known for.
In 2006, I decided to enter the Halloween Costume Contest with her rainbow outfit. Winning the contest gave her the Shiny title above her head.

Personality
Marisa is very eager to help, especially with difficult missions. Her fighting style is fast and furious, so she can seem reckless at times. She is easily distracted, and may leave her teammates in peril without realizing it while trying to rescue another hero in trouble. But she'll rush back to help as soon as she notices. Marisa is very amicable, and tends to let others lead. She projects an air of self-confidence while in costume, but if you catch her off-duty, she can be shy, self-conscious, and easily discouraged.
Powers
Marisa is not sure where her powers came from. DNA tests have not shown any mutant genes, so she believes that she had contact with something magical at some point, and possibly related to the Greek/Roman goddess of the rainbow, Iris.
She has psychokinetic abilities, allowing her some degree of precognition, clairvoyance, telepathy, telekinesis, and the ability to shift psychic energy into kinetic energy. In practice, she can accelerate and hypercharge her teammates' movement, attacks, and recovery; slow down and weaken her opponents, and use opponents' energy to heal her allies.
Equipment
To heal an injured ally using her psychokinetic abilities, Marisa must transfer energy from another nearby being. Having been frustrated by situations in which she was unable to do this, she had a colleague make her a handheld medical device. She also has a magical axe and blackwand that she got from officials within MAGI.
Weaknesses and Limitations
- A split second can make all the difference for Iris while she is in battle. Her direct psychic attacks can cover a great distance to a target, but require an amount of concentration that results in a slow execution.
- Iris' kinetic abilities have near instant effects, but this is not always a positive attribute. With an ill-timed speed boost, for example, she can send an unprepared teammate skidding over a cliff.
- Though she can heal herself quickly off an enemy's energy, she also gets injured quickly since she has no natural defenses.
- Lately she's been having what appear to be panic attacks. It's not clear what's causing them. The effects are an inability to use any super powers, intense anxiety, trembling/sweating, and exhaustion. All color also disappears from her face and costume. Each attack has not lasted for more than a few minutes. Iris seems capable of "pulling herself out of it" with a visible burst of refracted light (a rainbow colored glow), though that may just be how an episode ends.
Character History
Marisa is private about her personal life, but has mentioned that she is close with her three sisters and has loving parents. She studied math in college, and became a background investigator from a friend's referral. She is unsure about her long-term career goals. She doesn't make any money from her heroic activities, but has become well-known enough to use her influence to finance hero-related expenses.
As a hero, it is known that Iris was part of Time's Exiles, a small supergroup in another dimension (the dimension Portal Corp has named "Freedom"). She transferred to the Virtue Universe in October 2007.
Outfits
Iconic OutfitIris' main costume. The shiny, sleek material is a flexible metal-alloy coated bodysuit. It deflects energy, fire, and electricity attacks well, but is not suited to withstand piercing or other physical blows. It is also very shiny. Why? Uh, to distract enemies? Yeah, that's it! |
Rainbow BattlesuitHer Rainbow Battlesuit, used when Iris needs more armor than her sleeker and shinier bodysuit. White wings also magically appear when this battlesuit is used. The winged outfit is also used when Iris requires sustained flight and is not in her "avatar" form below. |
Goddess of the Rainbow/Iris Avatar?Iris occasionally transforms into a traditional representation of the Greek and Roman goddess that is her namesake. Or is it just namesake? A keen observer may notice that she speaks quite less when transformed into the toga, sandals, and golden tipped wings. She has never identified herself as being an avatar of the goddess, but neither has she denied some connection. It is possible that she does not know this information herself. Whatever the truth, Iris appear serene, composed, and generally at ease while in this form. A bright golden glow surrounds her. |
Distressed? When distressed, battle-fatigued, or otherwise upset, the color literally drains from her face and costume. Smoky vapor seems to steam from her body. She also gets the hiccups. See Weaknesses above. |
Secret IdentityMarisa's favorite colors are black, red, and purple. She also likes to wear tall Dr. Martens boots. |
