Jean-Paul Lemat was born in a Paris slum, eldest child of an alcoholic Algerian immigrant. His mother, once a provincial beauty, was forced to take in laundry (and the occasional "boarder") to put food on the table, which she was usually able to do.By his fifth birthday Jean-Paul was already running the streets, acting as lookout and courier for several underworld organizations.

Although he never received any formal education, he is extremely intelligent, teaching himself to read by the age of 11. This might not have happened had he not found himself with little else to do, having been sentenced to 4 years in a reformatory for, at the age of 9, killing his 17-year-old uncle whom he suspected of cheating in a card game. This, the first of his many kills, was accomplished with his father's straight razor, starting Jean-Paul's lifelong fascination with edged weapons.

Here, too, the reformatory helped to mold him, for he found in its library an exhaustive tome on the art of fencing which he carried down to the boiler room at night. There, with 2 iron rods painstakingly removed from a barred window, he spent hours practicing stances and combinations.

In the decade folowing his release from the reformatory, his reputation among the gangs of Paris grew steadily, capped by an incident in which he singlehandedly took down five of a rival gang's top fighters. It was after this that he became known by the sobriquet "Le Boucher" (The Butcher).

There are those who insinuate that his move to the Rogue Isles came as a result of the climate in Paris becoming too "hot". Jean (as he is now most often called) scorns these rumors, saying that the quickest way to "get rich, retire and grow fat" as he puts it, is to run with the largest pack, and that here is where the action is. It should be noted that he posesses no "superpowers" at all, surviving on his wits, strength and skill with his chosen tools. That he is able to do so (thus far, at least) in the supercharged atmosphere of the Isles does seem to suggest that he came here by choice, not out of necessity.

He is essentially a lone wolf, which makes his rise to a position of prominence in the Leather & Lace Agency something of a puzzle. He has formed a few friendships there, but the only person in the world to whom he remains totally devoted is his only surviving sister, still living in Paris. It is probable that much of his income is sent to her, as she seems to have no other means of support.
