Background
Jennifer Collins
Despite an intellect that allowed her to earn doctorates in quantum physics, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering by the time she turned thirteen and a natural grace that could have made her an Olympic contender in gymnastics, Jennifer Collins grew up in the shadow of her older sister, Agent Lisa Collins of Longbow.
That Lisa's heroism was only possible thanks to the very powersuit that Jenny had designed for her was beside the point. To her family and schoolmates it was the lithe and beautiful older sister with her flaming red hair and crystal green eyes was every bit the hero; foiling Rikti plots, fighting the forces of Nemesis and Arachnos, exposing the corruption of the Tsoo and Family; while the shy, short, mouse-haired, and not exceptionally busty younger sister was not.
Even when Lisa appeared to have gone over to villainy (as part of what was later revealed to be an extensive deep cover operation by Longbow) her family still devoted all their attention to her older sister; Why would Lisa do this? What could have driven Lisa down this path?
To try and save her sister, Jenny created a powersuit of her own and took the name code-name Zephyr to become a hero and try and save her sister from her apparently dark path. But before Jenny could even really get started at heroing, Lisa returned from her covert operation as a hero who had foiled a major Rikti plot and with a fiancé in tow too boot. Jenny hung up her powersuit and stopped even trying to get out of her sister's long shadow after that.
With a brain far too big to need high school and which, frankly, intimidated her classmates, but still not mature enough to be seriously employed by anyone who could make use of her knowledge, Jenny felt adrift and without purpose. As such, she ended up spending most of her time hanging out at the base of the Paragon Aurors; to which her sister had been assigned as a liaison officer; where she puttered with the computer system and made sure that her sister's powersuit was on the bleeding edge of technical capabilities.
Then one day the Aurors returned from a mission with a powerfully built man in Egyptian attire. To Jenny his expression seemed as if he’d lost his entire world and she felt a connection to him like nothing she’d ever felt before. The man, who's name she learned was Horus-Re, could barely speak from his grief and, as she approached him, saw that he was sheltering a tiny mote of light in his hands.
When Jenny looked at the pathetic flickering wisp of light Horus cradled she felt a tingle in her mind as Hether’s dying consciousness brushed against hers. That tiny ember was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. Without a second thought she reached out and, before her sister could even begin to voice her protest, opened her heart and mind to the wisp of light. Jenny felt a wave of heat overtake her as the wisp entered her and millenia of memories and experiences, hopes and desires flooded into her mind; merging with her very essence until there was no division between where Jennifer Collins ended and Hether began...
Hether
Five thousand years before the raising of the earliest pyramids, the Kheldian Re and his life-mate Hether came to explore the planet Earth as part of scientific mission. They found the beginnings of a great civilization in the lands called Khemet which was ruled over by the warrior king, Ausir, and his sorceress queen, Eset. The two energy beings presented themselves to Ausir and Eset, exchanging knowledge of the cosmos for knowledge of the world they were exploring. Ausir and Eset then used the knowledge given them by "the gods" and their principles of cosmic balance (which they called Ma'at) to bring prosperity to their people.
But Sutekh, the brother of Ausir, was jealous of his brother’s connection to the gods and of the devotion of the people to Ausir. Embittered he went out into the deserts and abandoned places seeking means to take what he felt was his by right. His search led him to an abandoned temple that had been ancient even in the days of his father's father's father. Within he heard the call of another god; one that could feel the blackness in his heart; One more than willing to strike down the gods of Ausir and Eset. It could grant him power beyond his wildest imaginings. All Sutekh had to do was open his heart and mind to it. Sutekh did so and all that was good and human was consumed by the dark god. His body became a vessel for a force of oblivion that the Kheldians called a Nictus. When Sutekh returned from his self-imposed exile he demanded that Ausir, Eset, and all the peoples of the land of Khemet bow before him as their true god. When Ausir refused, Sutekh slew his brother. Shocked into action, Re tried to defend Ausir's family from the beast that Sutekh had become, but the merger of human and Nictus had made Sutekh more than the sum of his parts and Re was wounded by the monster.
In order to protect her beloved, Hether bonded herself with a young woman named Sehkmet and the new being used her new power to hold off Sutekh long enough Re, Eset, and her son Horus to gather the remains of Ausir and escape before barely escaping herself. Though Re quickly recovered, he knew that he was no match for the monster that Sutehk had become. Only by merging with a mortal as Hether had would he be able to stand against the fiend who even now was setting about cloaking the world in eternal darkness. To save his father's kingdom and avenge his death, Horus bonded with Re as Sehkmet had Hether, taking the name Horus-Re to symbolize the joining of the two beings into one greater whole.
Through agents still loyal to Ausir, they heard how Sutekh had opened a shadow cyst within the city and had even gone so far as to infect his own wife and son, Hir, turning them into Nictus as well. Horus-Re and Sehkmet-Hether realized they would need an army of their own to face such power. Horus' sorceress mother, Eset, was the first to rally to the cause and she in turn recruited the wise man Thoth and the shape-shifting Baast. But it was not until Sutekh's son, now called Hir-Anubis, rebelled and joined Horus-Re's army that they had the power they needed for victory.
In a titanic battle that changed very face of the land of the Khemet, Horus-Re, Sehkmet-Hether and their allies did battle with the legions of Sutekh. In the end, the magic of Eset and Thoth allowed Horus-Re and Sehkmet-Hether to imprison Sutekh and his Nictus minions within the very cyst they had formed to bring others to Earth.
In the wake of this battle, HorusRe took Sehkmet-Hether as his wife and claimed his father's crown. It would take years to completely undo the damage Sutekh had caused and years more before the last of his minions were defeated, but eventually they were all brought to heel. But of the forgotten temple that bestowed its power on Sutekh no sign could be found; vanished into the sands of the desert as if it had never been.
When the rebuilding was finally complete, Horus-Re and Sehkmet-Hether left the land of Khemet in the hands of their son and returned to the stars along with Hir-Anubis and the still imprisoned Sutekh and his Nictus forces.
Over the course of ages these events became stories, the stories became legends, the legends became myths, and the myths finally became a religion. By the time the pyramids were built the truth behind the gods of the land of Egypt had been lost to history.
But for Horus-Re and Sehkmet-Hether none of that mattered. With their merger, the human/Kheldian hybrids were effectively immortal and, for the next ten thousand years the two explored thousands of worlds until the word reached them of the unthinkable; Sutekh had escaped and was even now returning to Earth for some inscrutible purpose.
Horus-Re and Sehkmet-Hether resolved to stop the fiend as they had before and so set out for the world that their human halves had come from so long ago. But no sooner had their vessel arrived than forces loyal to Sutekh fell upon it and pulled it from the sky. Sehkmet-Hether found herself seperated from Horus-Re and beset by fiends wielding magic that flayed her body and soul.
Though Horus and a group of magic-wielding heroes drove off her attackers, Sehkmet's wounds were mortal and she died in Horus' arms. Hether was only dimly aware of her mortal half dying, for she too was near death, barely able to hold herself together. She dimly recalled being sheltered in Horus' hands as they were whisked away to the Heroes' base in hopes of finding a way to save her, but Hether feared she would soon die and leave her dear Horus all alone.
Then Horus came upon a girl named Jenny Collins. Through their bond, Hether could feel the instant connection he felt with the girl and, even though she was barely conscious, Hether reached out to the girl as well...Jen-Hether
Jen-Hether opened her eyes after what felt like a lifetime. It had been barely more than a second. She was still Jennifer Collins but she was also Hether and Sehkmet and all Hether’s previous hosts as well. She felt the quantum foam underlying reality and the waves and patterns of electromagnetic energy swirling and fizzing around her like she was swimming in a sea of seltzer water. She was one of the world’s leading minds on quantum theory and she realized in an instant that in all her studies she had barely scratched the surface of what she was now a living breathing part of. Most of all, merged with the feelings of teenage infatuation for Horus was the now millennia of love Hether had felt for her mate.
Needless to say, this was going to take some getting used to.
Jen-Hether faced a trial by fire in coming to terms with her new existance. Not only had Sutekh returned to Earth, but the armies of the Nicti had gathered as well under the banner of Arakhn and Requiem (better known to the Kheldians as the mighty Dirge of Entropy) and, with the arrival of additional Peacebringers, Earth quickly became the frontline of the ancient war between the Kheldians and the Nicti. There were also countless other threats to be dealt with, such the mystics of the Circle of Thorns, Tsoo, and Banished Pantheon, all of whom the Paragon Aurors regularly pitted themselves against.
Jen embraced the conflict eagerly, having finally found her own purpose outside of her sister's shadow and a part of herself she never even realized she had been missing. She quickly honed her powers on the front lines of the fight against the forces of darkness, where her quick wits and keen intellect soon saw her promoted first to deputy and then field commander of the Paragon Aurors.
She also gained new allies, volunteering as an operative of the Vanguard in the battle against the Rikti and becoming an associate of the Midnight Squad in their quests to uncover hidden lore. She also works regularly with the scientists of PortalCorp in their exploration of the multiverse. In the course of her adventures she's faced everything ancient "gods" to high-tech monstrosities and even gone toe to toe with the nearly invincible Hamidion.
But all the while she, Horus-Re and Hir-Anubis have never stopped searching for Sutekh. While aiding the Peacebringer forces on Earth they quickly learned that Sutekh had never joined with the rest of the Nictus forces on Earth. In time they learned his dark schemes went far beyond those of even Requiem or Arkhan. In his quest for absolute power Sutekh has foresworn the science of the Nicti in favor of the power of magic and a quest for the long lost temple from which he first arose and the power he knows lies within... the secrets and might of the Kheldian whose unholy experiments transformed itself into the FIRST Nictus; the being known even in the most ancient of Earth's legends as Lucifer.
Personality
Unlike most Kheldian/human joinings where the personalities remain distinct and either individual can end the partnership at any time, the merger of Jennifer Collins and Hether was far more extreme, with their minds literally merging into a single consciousness. This merging was so complete that, even when Jen-Hether was subjected to a Circle of Thorns ritual that attempted to seperate the two, the spell failed to work completely. After their capture, the mages noted with disbelief that they could not find any distinct components in her to seperate.
One of the reasons the merger was so complete was that Jenny and Hether had virtually identical personalities to begin with. Both were most defined by their innate curiosity, intelligence, and compassion. Jen longs to understand everything she runs across, be it some aspect of nature, science, or even magic and often asks questions and seek clarifications on things until she's satisfied her curiosity. Often this comes with a belated realization that her inquiries have gone well past the level of politeness or propriety.
The part of her personality that is distinctly Hether is a level of self-confidence that Jennifer Collins never had on her own. While Jennifer longed to get out of her sister's shadow she rarely spoke up or offered her opinions unless asked. By contrest, as Jen-Hether, she now confidently states her opinions on matters and is more than willing to take charge when problems arise. She is likewise far more outgoing than Jennifer used to be. While Jennifer doubted her own atttractiveness when compared to her sister, Jen-Hether knows she's attractive and has no problems with showing that attractiveness off.
By contrast, the part of her that is distinctly Jennifer is her youthful passion. Though she did not have the confidence to express it often, Jenny often had strong feelings about matters. She didn't want to stand by when it looked like her sister might be losing her soul to villainy and she wanted to make a difference the world, she just wasn't sure how. Now as Jen-Hether she has the confidence to express and act upon her passions. When she sees something unjust going on she routinely inserts herself into the situation in an effort to fix it, even at signicant risk to herself. This youthful passion makes her prone to impulsive action and she can often be swayed by emotional appeals, both of which have gotten her into trouble on a few occassions.
Jen-Hether remains close to her human family, especially her sister, though the relationship has changed to one of equals now. None of them completely understands the changes she's undergone, but she's still Jenny Collins, even though she's also Hether too. Jen treasures the time she has with her human family for, as an immortal, she knows she's likely to outlive them all. Hether's experience tells her not to distance herself from them out of fear of being hurt by their passing, but to savor every moment with them so that she can remember them forever.
Though it took her some time to come to a balance between the rush of teenaged infatuation and deep lasting love of her merged consciousness, Jen-Hether and Horus-Re became lovers (the legal age of consent in Rhode Island is sixteen) and Jen taught Horus about modern Earth culture. Though her family initially objected to this relationship, Jen-Hether and Horus-Re were married on her eighteenth birthday once she no longer needed her parent's permission and her family has slowly come to accept that what they share is not some ill-considered teenage crush.
Appearance
Distinguishing Features
Jen-Hether’s eyes glow a blue-white when she uses her Kheldian abilities. She otherwise looks like an attractive young woman in her late teens of slightly below average height and a lean build. Her tendency to line her eyes in the distinctive style of the ancient Egyptians sets her apart from the usual crowd and she normally keeps her hair styled in a short wedge cut because of it's practicality.
Uniform
Neither Horus nor Sehkmet came to Earth with anything resembling contemporary clothing and so Jen usually goes into battle wearing the standard uniform of the Paragon Aurors, a skintight bodysuit composed of enchanted impervium microfibers and extra-dimensional pockets that allow the wearing to stow and the later retrieve objects seemingly from nowhere. Jen prefers this suit because it is light and flexible, allowing her the maximum amount of protection possible without sacrificing mobility.
When working with Vanguard Jen wears a standard-issue suit of impervium armor, though she chooses to forego the visor and face mask since it would interfere with her vision powers. While she could requistion heavier armor if she wished, Jen prefers to use the lightweight enlisted soldier armor because, like her Auror's uniform, it does not impair her ability to maneuver.
Clothing
When not on duty Jen-Hether prefers to wear various tight fitting and/or fairly revealing outfits, often in shades of blue and/or grey. Prior to her merger with Hether, Jenny would have been far too self-conscious to ever consider wearing such clothing, but Hether's confidence, along with Sehkmet’s lack of modesty (clothing was largely optional in the ancient Egyptian society), have greatly influenced her feelings on what is and is not appropriate attire.
Because Jen is able to transmute matter virtually at will, she is able to instantly create and/or alter the appearance of her clothing with just a moment's thought. This also allows her to don either of her uniforms in an instant.
Abilities
Education and Notable Skills
Prior to her merger with Hether, Jennifer Collins had a 200 I.Q. and PhD's in quantum physics, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. To this base Hether added over 10,000 years of life experience on thousands of worlds and an understanding of the universe unknown to most mortals. From her time with the Aurors she's picked up a practical understanding of magic, sufficient to perform some basic rituals with the right instructions on hand, while her time serving with the Vanguard has given her an in depth understanding of Rikti technology.
Jen is also an Olympic-caliber gymnast, and can perform astounding leaps with ease and even easily dodge most incoming ranged attacks. This latter ability comes in extremely handy when facing foes armed with quantum-array weapons. Though she rarely has need for it, Jen also retains Sehkmet's training in hand-to-hand combat which had been honed over the course of ten thousand years.
In the opening days of the first Rikti invasion, Jenny designed an electromagnetic powersuit (EMP-1) for her sister, to help protect Lisa in her her battles with the Rikti. Jenny later built a suit of her own that she called the "Zephyr" (ZPR-1) which channeled and directed that zero point radiation. She continues to be the chief technician for Lisa's powersuit (currently the EMP-5).
Kheldian Powers
Jen-Hether is a Kheldian Peacebringer. As such she is able to sense and manipulate quantum and electromagnetic energy in near limitless ways. Though her upper limits have not been measured, tests run with SERAPH have shown that Jen is capable of sustained outputs on the order of 40 kA, with the ability project charges of five coulombs and 500 MJ and peak blasts on the order of 120 kA and 350 coulombs (roughly equivalent to the largest bolts of lightning). These impressive outputs are possible because Jen is not so much expelling the energy from herself (an act that would quickly leave her exhausted) as she is redirecting the flow of cosmic forces around her.
Specific active abilities that Jen-Hether has demonstrated include;
- Project electromagnetic energy which can form into concussive EMP blasts, force fields, and produce propulsive flight.
- Redirect and rearrange energy and matter at a quantum level which allows her to heal herself (even bringing herself back from the brink of death) and others, temporarily boost her physical endurance and speed, repair or even create various materials, and even bend light around herself to become invisible.
- This ability is also grants Jen-Hether functional immortality as, every time she heals herself, she resets the quantum state of her physical body back to the point at which Jenny Collins and Hether merged.
- Transform partially or completely into a pure energy state, giving her the ability move at incredible speeds, render herself resistant or even impervious to harm (though the latter state is difficult to maintain and is totally incapable of affecting the material world), and take on the energy-based forms Hether's past hosts (most notably those of the of the Mefnanim and Kurukt).
Specific sensory abilities Jen-Hether has demonstrated include the following;
- Able to recieve and transmit radio singals (including cellphone transmissions)
- Read the magnetic signatures of any ID card at a distance, including those used by Paragon City and Arachnos.
- Read the electromagnetic aura of a living being to detect foreign substances, disease, injury, and illness.
- Detect deliberate lies and strong emotions by reading the electrical impulses in the brain (can not actually read thoughts).
- Sense dimensional anomolies (including beings from other dimensions) by the variations in their quantum signatures.
- With a few minutes of observation, Jen can get an accurate enough read for PortalCorp to be able to lock onto the subject's home dimension.
Like all Kheldians, Jen-Hether draws strength from the psychic emanations of those who believe in her. This vastly increases her power and resiliance when in the presence of allies; allowing her to easily to go toe to toe with even the mightiest of supervillains.
Weaknesses
As a Kheldian, Jen-Hether is more vulnerable to specially calibrated quantum array weapons. While these weapons were once able to completely bypass her normally formidable physical defenses, extensive study of the weapons by the Peacebringers has allowed them to better resist the energy blasts. Even now that she can resist the blasts, they still pack a whallop, so Jen much prefers to rely upon her own innate agility to avoid being hit entirely when faced with them.
Jen has no special defense against psionic damage or effects, though her dwarf and light forms do offer her some measure of protection from the more debilitating effects of psionic powers.
Though not a weakness per se, Jen is also emotional and prone to jumping into situations without thinking things all the way through when confronted with what she sees as an injustice.
Equipment
Jen-Hether's Kheldian powers enable her deal with virtually any situation. Thus, other than her Auror and Vanguard uniforms, Jen-Hether generally foregoes virtually all equipment save for those mission specific items that her various contacts and superiors require her to use in completing her assignments. The exceptions to this are the standard Aurors-issued blackwand and a shotgun loaded with shells blessed by a Catholic priest to deal with certain entities that can only be harmed via metaphysical means.During her brief stint as a superhero prior to her merger with Hether, Jenny Collins made use of a powersuit of her own design called the ZPR-1 "Zephyr". The core of the powersuit was a zero-point field tap which allowed the suit harness the near limitless zero-point energy that underlies all of reality. These taps powered an array of energy weapons, a flight system, and a "nanoswarm" system that used tens of thousands of nanomachines (powered by the zero-point field tap) to rend or repair matter at the molecular level (the precise effects were regulated by a sophisticated neural network computer that could read brain impulses and translate them into action).
While the Zephyr suit was quite formidable, it could in no way match Jen's now innate abilities to manipulate energy and matter. As such, Jen has largely abandoned the suit and has since incorporated most of its advanced systems into the ever improving design of her sister's powersuit, for which Jen still serves as developer and chief technician. She continues to tweak and upgrade the systems, occassionally rebuilding the machine nearly completely. The suit is currently in it's fifth iteration (the EMP-5) and features a zero-point power generator (based on the original ZPR-1 design), multi-phase EMP generator, gravitic flight and shield arrays, myomer exoskeleton, and a nanotech repair system.
