Character History

Ashton Edwards is not the first person in his family to exhibit amazing powers. He is in fact a fourth generation super hero, or so he hopes to be...

Viva La France!

Ashton's great-grandma - 20th Century Joan of Arc?

His great grandmother Josette Bontecau was just a teenager when German soldiers ransacked her home during the "Great War." Held captive in her basement along with her younger siblings, Josette feared the worst; that her parents were dead. Being the oldest and most capable, she began planning their escape. Her bravery in the midst of danger saved not only her own life, but the lives and futures of her baby sister and three younger brothers. She went on to serve as a freedom fighter in French villages that were still occupied by German troops, where her take-charge attitude and willingness to fight to the end earned her the distinction as a modern-day Joan of Arc. When the Germans were finally defeated, ending the supposed "War to End All Wars," she put her natural leadership skills to use in helping rebuild the French countryside.

Damioselle Emissaire

Josette becomes Damioselle Emissaire!

In an effort to promote and maintain the "new" era of peace and goodwill around the globe, the League of Nations decided to form a group of super powered enforcers selected from its member nations. News of Josette's actions over the past few years had already traveled from Moselle to Gironde, of course reaching Paris along the way. When approached by the government with the opportunity to join a French "super" soldier program she immediately accepted, viewing it as an opportunity to continue defending the innocent, but on a much more grand scale. Among the 35 participants, the experiment only proved successful on Josette. In the ensuing months, she was trained extensively in hand-to-hand combat and combined with the powers from the program, increased healing and endurance rates and the ability to fly, she became quite the formidable, fighting force. Josette was given the official name Damioselle Emissaire and she became France's contribution to the newly formed super-powered, peace-keeping force called the Ambassadors of Peace and Justice.

The Ambassadors of Peace and Justice

Made up of seven heroines and heroes from the League of Nation's member countries, the Ambassadors were led by Captain Diplomat of Great Britain. They became quite the team during the late 20's and early 30's, settling disputes all over the globe and helping to maintain the era of peace that the League was so desperately preaching. They were used quite extensively during the depression, lifting overall morale by passing out food in bread lines and peacefully quelling riots in the streets. When the Socialist and Fascist states started to rise to power, the Ambassadors were right in the thick of things, trying to thwart their attempts at world domination. But, by the time that World War II started, the League had cut funding for the Ambassadors and each member was sent back to their respective country.

A World At War

Even so, the strong sense of loyalty to use their powers for good motivated each of the Ambassadors to take up their homeland's fight in the war against oppression. Josette continued on as Damioselle Emissaire, fighting the Nazis all the way from the Alps to the Sahara; from Paris to Berlin to Rome to London. In 1944, France was liberated and a year later the German and Japanese regimes fell. Josette had served her country far above and beyond her wildest dreams. Yet, as the 1940's came to a close, she was beginning to feel time catch up with her. Although her powers had prevented her from aging up until that point, she began to notice changes in her physiology. She found herself tiring more quickly and her recovery periods were much more drawn out. So, she made a decision to hang up her tights and settle down to a "normal" life.

The Family Legacy

Josette in the late-1950's.

Although not officially Damioselle Emissaire anymore, Josette didn't step entirely out of the spotlight. She moved to the United States and settled in the "City of Heroes", Paragon. There, she married an American architect and began to raise a family, all the while continuing to use what powers and strength she had remaining to help defend the defenseless in her new community. She watched her daughter and granddaughter grow-up with the same powers she possessed, only to a lesser degree. Both took up the mantle respectively as the American heroines Lady Emissary I and Lady Emissary II. Yet, her true pride and joy was her great grandson, Ashton, who loved sitting on her lap in the rocker and listening to her amazing stories of how she fought for justice and peace all around the world. Her powers finally ran their course in late 2003 and Josette passed on at the age of 102.

Junior Emissary

Well, it was these amazing stories and family legacy that have inspired Ashton in his quest to become a superhero. At a young age, he exhibited the same powers that the generations before him possessed. So, he began training in martial arts in order to prepare him for the road ahead. Since his grandmother has long since retired from active duty and his mother only dons her mask on occasion, Ashton feels it is now his time! He has even made contact with some of the remaining members of his great grandma's original super team, the Ambassadors. His ultimate goal is to someday stand alongside them in their quest to bring peace and justice to the world. Yet, he is still a teenager; young and brash at times. He has much to learn about being a superhero and even more to learn about life in general. Even so, he has convinced his parents to allow him to follow his dreams. In honor of his great grandma, Ashton calls himself Junior Emissary. With hard work and effort he hopes to live up to the stories of his family's past.

Known Powers

Ashton was born with the same powers that his great grandmother received from the "super" soldier program over a hundred years ago. He has a tremendous ability to heal more quickly than the average human, giving him a strong resistance to disease. His body also has a high rate at recovering stamina, which compliments his ability in hand-to-hand combat quite well. His regenerative abilities do not seem to affect his current aging, but if he follows the same course as the others in his family, he will stop aging in his early twenties and not age again until his fifties when his powers start to diminish. Although he can fly, it is still a power that he must master before he uses it more extensively.

Abilities and Talents

At a young age, he was enrolled in defense classes and martial arts schools. When his great grandma was alive, she arranged for him to train with some of the best hand-to-hand fighters the world had to offer. All of this teaching and practice has turned Ashton into quite the capable melee combatant.

Personality

Although determined and focused on reaching his goals, Ashton is at times very immature. He excels in carrying out the mission at hand and is incredibly accomplished as a fighter and using his powers to his advantage, but when it comes to normal everyday things...he's just a regular fifteen year old. He is at times a messy eater and he certainly needs to be told about twenty times to pick up his room. He is for the most part honest; almost to a fault. Very curious about things around him, he has a tendency to become annoying with repetitive questions and statements. Even so, there are times he seems to lose focus and drift off mid-conversation. He has much to learn about being a hero and even more to learn about life, but he is willing to do whatever it takes to carry on the family legacy.
