Once Upon a Time in Edinburgh
Love, Money and Family

David and Saoirse Cameron were well known around Scotland. David was a member of the Scottish Parliament, one of the more outspoken and successful members. Saoirse had her own line of bridal wear which was often seen on the most... discriminating brides. They had been married for ten years when they had a son, Luke. The spitting image of his father and a child, Luke was the Cameron family's pride and joy. By the time he was five, he was joined by a girl, who they named Ailis.

Ailis completed the picture perfect family, being a well-behaved, beautiful little girl. Her brown curls and light freckled features couldn't help but melt even the most icy of hearts. The two were so well behaved that it was rare to hear anyone critisizing the family for how the children were being raised. Though there were some who completely hated the idea that a family like that hired two fulltime nannies rather than Saoirse hiring more help at her salon.

Nevertheless, the children were raised, and raised happy. They had everything they could ever want. Lavish birthday parties, horses, dogs... they named it, they got it.

A Crack in the Perfect Facade

The perfection could only last for so long. Luke entered adolescence and soon after began to smoke and rebel. He got in with the 'wrong crowd' and by the time he was nineteen, had built up a reputation as an up and coming womanizer. A new girlfriend every other month, new vice for the weeks in between. The tabloids and papparazzi began to follow the family closely. Rehab, break-ups, repeated falls from grace. Luke became a PR nightmare.

No one was surprised when David and Saoirse sent Ailis off to a private school. No one questioned their decision to shield the girl from the publicity.

Kept there from the age of 13 until she turned 17, Ailis cultured a sort of resentment for the family she formerly held in high esteem. Hating that they hid her out of concern for publicity and her father's career, Ailis began to grow further from her parents and closer to her brother. Luke made sure she was relatively happy, sending her packages now and then, calling when he could. He knew what it was like to be less than perfect in their parents eyes, and hated to see his little sister treated that way. They often talked for hours on end, understanding each other better than anyone else.

When she finally returned home, Luke was the only one to get a smile from her.

The Socialite

The media kept a close eye on Ailis. Thanks to a promise she made Luke, Ailis kept her proverbial nose clean. She was the perfect daughter and sister. And in turn, Luke seemed to become a bit more tame. He stopped the drugs, and though he didn't back off the alcohol, he did somewhat back off the womanizing. The media nearly sainted Ailis with calming her brother's lifestyle.

For two years it went on, Ailis heading to Uni to take a few classes in art and oddly enough computer programming, citing the need to keep her options open. She attended all the fancy public events her parents asked her to, even managing to have Luke come along for some of them. It was a well known fact by then that Ailis was seeing a young man -quite seriously- by the name of Duncan Evans. The son of a former Parliament member, the relationship was cheered and encouraged as a good match by all.

Ailis was becoming quite well known for her kindness and sweet temperament, and rarely would anyone say anything ill about her. There was simply no reason to. She was popular but humble. She clubbed, but rarely drank, never smoked and went home at a reasonable time. She spent evenings with Duncan, her family, his family. Some days she spent with Luke, and they were only notable because he never once strayed from the proper path in her presence. People would note that the more she was around, the better he behaved overall.

And then the summer of her 20th year, six months following her birthday and four month shy of her wedding, Ailis... disappeared.

It was a shock to everyone. No trace was found of her, beyond locating her purse and one shoe on the outskirts of Edinburgh. She had eaten breakfast with Luke and was on her way to a dress fitting at her mother's shop. The appointment was for eleven o'clock, Ailis never made it. The police questioned everyone they could. Rumors of a kidnapping circulated, but no ransom was ever demanded. No body ever found. The family and Duncan's family were devastated.

A New Life
Moving In

Not long after a young woman disappeared from Edinburgh, a new one moved into an apartment in Chatswood, Sydney, Australia. She had black hair, freckles and a nose ring. She spoke with a soft Scottish accent, but that wasn't anything too out of the ordinary. Chatswood boasted quite a few immigrants from all over the globe. Elspeth Bryce fit in quite nicely.

She started off working a few part time jobs. Coffee shop here, deliveries there. Then after a few months her application to a Sydney area tech firm was accepted. Elspeth's record was, while not impressive, good enough that AusTech Industries was interested in having her on their team.

Chips and Chat

AusTech was a growing tech firm with many branches. From computer chips to weapons manufacturing, they had their fingers in several pies. Elspeth knew it was a rare opportunity she had been given to work at the firm and said a silent thank you as she walked through the glass doors. Pausing at the reception desk, she gave her name to the quiet blonde waiting there. The young woman checked her messages and smiled, "Mr. Ganley is waiting to speak with you. He's on the fifth floor, second office to the right."

Elspeth nodded and smiled her thanks, then took the elevator up. She smoothed her business suit then stepped out and moved to the door. As she raised her hand to knock, it was opened by a younger man in an expensive blue suit. He smiled brightly and tilted his head, "Ms. Bryce. I've been anticipating your arrival, come on in, we have much to discuss."

She followed him in and took a seat in one of the chairs opposite his desk. He sat across from her, relaxing into his chair and lazily looked her over, his voice respectfully low, "Your brother gave you rather... sterling reccomendations. I trust him implicitly and hope that trust is not misplaced in this circumstance."

Elspeth's gaze dropped at the mention of her brother, her lips curling into a small smile. "Luke.. No, I assure ye, Mr. Ganley, ye won't be disappointed. I'll do my best. Whatever ye need... within reason... I will take care of." With that answer, she looked back at her employer's face and smiled. "I'm sure this will be a mututally beneficial arrangement."

He returned the smile, then nodded, leaning forward and adopting a more businesslike attitude. "Very well, Ms. Bryce. As I am sure you are aware, AusTech has many branches and projects going at one time. I am going to assign you a rotating schedule. You'll work the standard 5 days a week. Each month, we will shift you to a different area. First the computer chips, then the defense, then the weapons... You get the idea. One day each week, however, you will report to me for other jobs. Things I don't feel I can trust other employees with. You, however, considering your background and family, I believe I can."

Elspeth nodded, "I believe I can manage that without a problem."

Mr. Ganley studied her for a few moments, then nodded. "Very well, report upstairs to Mr. Rochester and I will see you on Friday at seven in the morning." He stood up, she followed suit and as he was about to open the door, he paused, his voice low once more, "Luke says he misses you... and to tell you he is well."

Elspeth closed her eyes and nodded. "Send him my affection if ye should have the chance." With that, she opened her eyes and left the office.

Go-To Gal

Elspeth was a model employee; never late, never complaining, never missing a day. She learned the ropes, eagerly jumped into the data and hands on work involved in each facet of her job. From studying weapon specs to quality testing the computer chips, Elspeth was quite reliable. If she was called up to help Mr. Ganley once a week, who was going to question it? She never came back looking less put together than she had left. There was no ground for any rumors of illicit affairs. Some days she was even seen following him around and taking notes, rumors beginning that she was being trained as his personal assistant.

In truth, Ganley had Elspeth playing courier and then some. AusTech had it's share of unsavory business. Ganley was using Elspeth to take care of some of the contacts. She was an attractive and confident woman, and with her rotating work, knew the ins and outs of the products. Besides that, Ganley knew she was more than capable of taking care of herself should things go sour.

Elspeth's Secret

Ailis had only disappeared from her life in Edinburg. Years ago, she was sent away to private school for 'her own good'. What no one realized was that, while the family was embarrassed by Luke's antics, they were ashamed of their daughter. Ailis had hit puberty with a veritable fireworks display of emotions... in more ways than one. Her DNA had apparently come with a twist - able to manipulate atoms, Ailis could spread radiation or -in contrast- fix things or shift energy and particles from one place to another... all with a bright display of color.

For a father who was known to be somewhat outspoken on the subject of mutants (and not for the better), Ailis' mutation was an ironic and somewhat unwelcome change to the family. Her parents were adamant - until she could learn to control it and not shame the family, she was to stay safely away at a supposed 'private academy'. The truth was that Ailis was sent to a second cousin's house in the country, along with a sort of strict governess to ensure her studies were kept to date and she didn't decide to stray from the property.

For the endurance of her stay, she spent the evenings honing her abilities. Focusing the blasts of atomic energy, finding ways to shift and manipulate the protons and neutrons around her. By the time the five years were up, there was extensive property damage but Ailis had strong control over her mutation. Her conversations with her brother by phone gave her an outlet. She had shared with him everything about her abilities, her fears, her deep resentment for their parents. He had listened, sharing her fears, fearing for her, hating the way she had been stashed out of sight. The month before she came home, he made her promise to behave and keep attention from herself; saying if she did, he would find a way to help her escape.

Escape she did, into the life of Elspeth.
