Introduction
Megami "Meg" Chiyoko (or Chiyoko "Meg" Megami) had two degrees from Harvard University by the time she was 10. She was also a computer expert and expert hacker.
At age 10, she hacked into the computers of an MMO as it was being upgraded...and accidentally erased the back up tapes. This eventually landed her with a sentence to community service, which was subsequently served as a member of a teen supergroup. During this time, she started a paying job as a inventor at TimeCraft, Inc, under the supervision of Mellissandria Restal.
Meg's Story
While working at TimeCraft, she managed to patent several of her own inventions, including prosthetic wings for injured birds, an offshoot of her invention of working, mechanical wings. She also invented a flight belt that can work either with or without said wings..based on Rikti technology, as well as technology from Mellissandria's home world.
She started school at Paragon Junior Supers Academy at age 13, only after graduating from Harvard with degrees in computer programming and astrophysics. She also worked as a teacher's aide when not on patrol or training in the use of her inventions. While there, it was discovered that she had telepathic potential, and subsequently trained in those powers as well.
At fourteen, she met another student, named Caleb Thornton. He'd come from a string of foster homes, eventually being adopted by the Thorntons. Meg and Caleb soon discovered they had things in common..they were both geniuses, and they wanted to help humanity in the long run. Eventually, they started seeing each other, then dating..
During this time, when she should have been concentrating on studies, she found herself forced into a chess match with a criminal mastermind called Dennings...causing enough concern that Longbow sent one of their agents into the school covertly to subject Meg to a series of psychological tests to see how intelligent she really was and if she could take Dennings on. She proved to be up to the challenge, outing the Longbow agent, Brock, then taking on Dennings himself when he took other students hostage and attempted to subvert them to his will.
At sixteen, Meg graduated from PJSA, along with Caleb, and was offered a fellowship in England. (She also rejected a job with Longbow- she never forgave the powers that be there for nearly causing a meltdown in her psyche.) Caleb followed her. Once in England, they were asked to help repair a rift. It had occurred in one of the Portal Corporation's London Branch portal, opening a 'time tunnel' 12 years in the past. This repair ultimately came with a hefty price..the couple were forced to stay behind in the past, to ensure that the rift-and the portal closed to prevent a worse disaster which could have destroyed much of time, space, and the Earth.
A few days after the accident occurred, the Thorntons resurfaced..older, wiser and with twin daughters Chiyoko (aka Meg Jr or Little Meg.) and Lily in tow..They had dared not resurface before lest they inadvertently alter time, remaining in England til that fateful day. After resurfacing, the Thornton family returned to live in Paragon City again. Both Meg and Caleb took teaching jobs at Paragon Junior Supers Academy, and Little Meg and Lily attend the school as well. Meg and Caleb also returned to TimeCraft, this time as researchers, living on the premises with their family. In rapid succession, they adopted an alien (best described as a foxgirl) named Violet, and had two sons, Colin, followed by Toshito (often called Toshi).
A strange thing happened about the time she was to give birth to Toshi- Meg started to become more and more powerful. At first, this was believed to be due to the hunt for Incarnate Shards, but soon, it was apparent it was much more than that...
The pregnancy was unusually rough and draining on Meg, who had never had it easy with pregancies, even with the latent ability to shift forms. Four months before she was to give birth, she suddenly went into labor...which at this point would have been fatal to both baby and mother, even as both fought.. (Toshi showed signs of the abliity to heal in the womb and attempted to heal his mother)...
Which is when a young man arrived and practically took over, using a one time ceremonial ritual to save both mother and child.
This man turned out to be Toshito from a future timeline- In his time, Meg had 'ascended', sending Caleb into a deep depression, and rejecting the baby that to him...killed his mother. There had been other changes in that timeline as well....the Earth had been overrun by alien races, and most of the metas hunted down and killed. This Toshi, to be known as Malachite Knight, decided to take matters into his own hands. After studying magic and healing, he took a vortex manipulator and used it for a one way trip to his own past.
Much to everyone's (including Toshi's) surprise, he didn't disappear when he changed time, but remained. Meg and Caleb welcomed this new, quirky, teenager into the family, and the boy was eventually given the name Toshito Malcolm Thornton, and legally adopted. Later, another ritual conducted by Elizabeth Shakiro, cemented Malcolm into the present time, fitting him in as if one would a puzzle piece.
'Mal' was there, next to his father when it became time for Toshi to be properly born.. This time, Toshi was born with no mishap.
Final Act?
The Christmas after Toshi was born, Meg was given some bad news...she had only months to live...
Apparently Meg was a decendant of a millenia old race of beings that lived on a higher plain of existence...kami or gods if you will. Every thousand years, a new Kami was chosen to take her place in the stars. However..never had anyone missed two chances to go before.
Meg was the first..
The first time, when Sailor Mau died during the final battle with Dennings in Meg's place...
The second time, when she had nearly died and lost Toshi...her son from the future had interfered.
According to what Washu Danielson told Meg, the Kami, or Chosin (apparently they also had a thousand names) would not be so patient the third time.
Meg decided to delay telling her family, determined to not ruin what should be happy times for the Thorntons. She also made ready to retire from being even a part time superhero, for using her powers would only hasten her own passing.
A few days later, Meg was with Caleb when it was time for Washu Danielson to give birth. Like many women of Meg's family, she tended towards rough deliveries, and this one was proving to be more difficult as usual..to the point that this one would have to be a cesarian. As Ms. Danielson was being prepped for surgery, Meg started to talk to..thin air? No one took notice as everyone else was paying attention to the patient. It was only when Meg started to glow that Caleb noticed. He was used to Meg pumping fresh air into the room and into patients with her powers. He was *not* used to her glowing...as much to his dismay, Meg was not only using her powers, but...something beyond her powers...She was heard arguing with someone only she could see. As Ms. Danielson and her daughter became stronger, the glow about Meg became much stronger as well....
This time...she could not stand by while someone giving birth could die... Her hand was forced.
Meg poured lifeforce into the mother and child, shortening her own lifespan, giving of herself to others, In the process, her own body was changed..even as it seemed to be incinerated. When the glow receded, it was 14 year old Meg who once again stood before Caleb, ascending after final tearful goodbyes between lovers.
So, if you ever look up into the sky above Paragon City at night, into the stars..and you think you see a smile or a wink..that may well be Kami Megami, continuing to watch over her home from afar...waiting for the day she is needed once more.
Powers and Gadgets
As has been mentioned before, Meg was an inventor, and as such, devised a network of gadgets that was originally operated by an AI inside a stuffed toy cat that rested on her shoulder. As it was heavy, she eventually managed to shrink the network, and now currently operates them herself. This includes a device that can create an ice slick under opponents, as well as snowstorms, and her various energy weapons.
Eventually, it was discovered that Meg had psionic abilities. She could manipulate air currents, although she still used her gadgets to reproduce some things like thunderstorms.
A new ability later manifested. She could, apparently, change her age. At first, it manifested only when she sneezed, turning herself fourteen, then back to her normal age with the next sneeze. She mastered it over time, and at time of ascension, her age range seems to be from around age 10 to age 30..a handy power to have to preserve her secret identity as Kami Megami.
Misc.
Her codename roughly translates into 'Goddess/Spirit of Incomprehensible Things' in Japanese. This started as a bit of a joke...
I retired (yes, retired!) this toon on Dec 26th, 2010 after realizing that her storyline had pretty much come to a natural end. If she had not taken a lead role when she had been intended to be a support toon only, things may well have been different. (in fact, she was originally going to be Oryo's sidekick as well as kid sister..)
Rather than continue to play a toon that, in essence had stopped speaking to me, I decided to retire her, but in such a way that leaves many doors open. Yes, she could return at some point or just remain in the background from here on out..after all, Meg isn't really dead, just ascended.
