OOC Perspective
To be quite honest, I11 held no major interest to me. Sure there were new powersets coming out, but did I really want to permanently retire one of my level 25+ alts? Fortunately I had a stroke of inspiration for a Fire/DB Tanker. While I have a fairly solid idea of who Kamiseen is, she remains a work in progress as I continue to interact with other characters.
I've created a continuation version of Kami as a DB/WP Scrapper. Fortunately no one has asked me (yet!) where the fiery shields went but that explanation is already roughed out.
Character History
Yasmin is an outcast Bedouin young woman. A few short months ago it was discovered that she learned the art of the blades while protecting herself from a suitor. She was punished for breaking the traditions of the tribe; she was scarred on her right cheekbone as a reminder for her crimes and her family and friends no longer acknowledge her presence.
Now with no family to speak of, Yasmin packed her few possessions, along with food and water, and walked out of the camp and into the desert. As the last of the tribe's tents faded from view, a fast-moving wind overtook the young woman and literally whisked her out of the area. The desert gods could appreciate her heart and her courage to support what she believed in; and so they gifted her with the ability to call upon the heat of the desert to protect herself and punish those that sow evil.
Having arrived in another country and definitely a different climate, Yasmin adopted the name Kamiseen as her moniker as she joined the efforts of so many others in serving justice in Paragon City.
Yasmin is actually the daughter of a British ambassador who was stationed in Saudi Arabia twenty years ago. She was kidnapped as a toddler and dumped at the edge of the Rub' al Khali (translated to 'Empty Quarter' in English) when her father failed to support a political policy.
Fortunately for the young girl, a Bedouin tribe discovered her the next day and nursed her back to health. She grew up as a Bedouin, never knowing that she had a family other than that of her foster parents and brother. Her biological mother, however, has never given up hope that one day her daughter will be returned.
Personality
Yasmin’s guiding principles are heavily based the Bedouin honour codes, however she follows both ird (purity denoted in an emotional and conceptual manner) and sharaf (protection of a woman’s ird, protection of property, maintenance of the honour of the tribe, and protection of the village). In addition to ird and sharaf, these codes encompass: diyafa (hospitality); generosity; tithing; and hamasa (courage/bravery).
She spends her free time either reading books, practicing artistic calligraphy, or training with her blades in the Sanctuary. Yasmin is not a Luddite and, while she prefers not to, she can use technology. At most this would include her Codex communicator and the database should she need to file a report.
Yasmin does not own consumer electronics such as a television, radio, iPod, or computer. Her apartment is quite minimalist and is decorated with throws, pillows, and rugs. This falls in line with donating a large portion of her income to charities or those that are destitute.
She has a tendency to write in Arabic over English. This may be problematic as few in Western culture are able to read the Arabic alphabet. Yasmin is able to speak both languages; however the use of local idioms or slang will cause her to question the origin of the English term.
Powers
Fiery Aura
The heat of the desert sun is unrelenting to most. Yasmin revels in the scorching temperature and can cloak herself in layers of fire. Fortunately for those around her, the divine flames will only burn those with impure intentions.
Pyre Mastery
Yasmin is able to form small fireballs as an extension of her fiery shields. Occasionally the heat is so intense that an enemy is rendered helpless while they attempt to recover.
Equipment
Dual Blades
Yasmin is skilled in the use of fighting simultaneously with two blades. She has been known to wield scimitars, short daggers, long daggers, and short swords.
Abilities
Desert Survival
While it may be an odd skill to have in an urban environment, Yasmin is knowledgeable in desert survival. During the course of her upbringing, she learned the basics of finding or creating a makeshift shelter, potable water, and foraging for food. She is also able to navigate the Arabian deserts around the Rub' al Khali.
Trivia
- Yasmin is fully fluent in Arabic (the player, on the other hand, does not speak/read/write a word of it) and fairly fluent in English. The gods gifted her with the second language when she was transported to the Western hemisphere; however, certain terms or slang will confuse her.
- The name Kamiseen is a variation of the spelling Khamaseen/Khamsin, which is the Middle Eastern term for the dry, hot wind that blows in from the desert.[1]
