The following excerpts are from the Paragon City Times article "Interview with a Killer: Kevin Curtis Karpentyr," printed Feb. 4, 2012. The interview was conducted days before Karpentyr's execution for his multiple murder convictions.

Like father

"My dad? He's dead now. I think. Back then they called him the Elder Karpentyr. He was a...and I hate to be cliche but he was a "notorious villain" operating in and around Paragon City. He always found himself working for the crime boss flavor of the month, while dreaming of running an organization of his own."

"He figured he would one day. And once he did, my dad figured he would need someone he could trust unconditionally watching his back. That's where I came in. He decided to teach me everything he knew. He pulled me out of the private school I was going to, away from my friends, away from what I think would have been a track and field scholarship to any college I wanted and started teaching me things."

"Starting on the morning of my 16th birthday, I wasn't eating birthday cake and opening gifts, I was shooting rifles and handguns and swinging and throwing swords and knives. My dad trained and worked with this guy named Daniel Bachman. I even had some sessions with his kid. Some girl named Vanessa. She seemed to be going through the same thing I was, we didn't get to talk much though, it was all business. She seemed to prefer the shooting, me I liked the knives and the closeness they forced you to have with your target."

"Did I find things to be a bit off, to be training to be...killing people...yeah I did. I thought about it here and there but I was with my dad. I didn't know where the hell my mother was ever, I didn't know if she was alive or dead, all I had was my dad and I was going to savor every moment I had with him."

"I had my first job when I was 18. I got the right to vote and my first kill the same day. It was a guy who owed money to my father. He wanted him taken out. He wanted the kill to be quiet, but he wanted it to be messy nonetheless to serve as a reminder to everyone else my dad did business with. Being the good son I am, I followed his order to the letter. I caught the man after work, gave him a smile from ear to ear. I dragged his body to the building entrance, cut him open autopsy style and left him there. Made quite a mess. But yeah, no one was late paying my dad again."

Turning point

"Nothing makes you rethink your life quicker then staring into the eyes of a 6-year-old girl who just witnessed you murder her family. The look of fear, of hurt, sorrow, instant lonliness...I...I lost it...I dropped my knives at the scene even..I just left...my eyes were tearing up, I damn near got hit by a couple cars running away from there..."

"I had just had enough"

Redemption

"...redemption...sure I thought of it. That's why I took the path of the heroes, to somehow offset my sins. I didn't honestly think it would make a difference in the grand scheme of things, but morally it helped me sleep a little better...just a little...to know I was trying."

"But hell, here I am on, on death row, talking to you, waiting for them to jam a needle in my arm and go to sleep. So I guess my efforts don't mean a thing huh..?"
