Origin
Kid Psyche's mutant powers manifested when Crey agents stormed his house in an attempt to capture the boy for study and experimentation. He fought back and disabled the security agents and was immediately recommended to Sister Psyche for training. She in turn suggested that Dexter join a super group that specialized in younger heroes. Hero Corp agreed and Kid Psyche was soon on his way to Youth League Headquarters for an interview. He joined the team and has remained with them ever since.
Powers
Kid Psyche is an empath with extremely high telepathic abiliies. His control of his empathy is limited however and he frequently "hears" background thoughts of those around him. The link is not limited to overt thoughts alone however, Kid Psyche picks up most of the messages the sender's body transmits...hunger, balance, emotions, basic sensory data like where an arm or leg is poised, etc. This sensory overload is pretty constant and as a result, Dexter tends to avoid contact with people more and more as his powers grow.
Kid Psyche's mutation also gives him powerful telekinesis and the ability to fly at incredible speeds. He can also project powerful blasts of psionic energy directly into the minds of his foes, as well as manipulate a subject's mental processes.
He can also reassemble damaged cellular material, re-knitting bones, repairing damaged nerves, neutralizing toxins within the body, etc. This ability makes him a valuable "healer" for the Youth League and a much sought-after defender in general.
Equipment
Kid Psyche wears a suit of armor to protect his body from bullets, large hammers, and the occassinal thrown vehicle. He carries a standard issue Youth League Comm. Unit in his belt and has another unit built into his helmet. His helmet is perhaps his most important piece of equipment. He calls it his Psionic Suppression Helmet and is rarely seen without it. The protective headgear has a built in GPS system, radio, Comm. system, and air filtering gear as well as it's greatest feature: a psionic neural suppression device that Dexter uses to limit his own natural power. Large crowds are difficult for Kid Psyche, unless he has his helmet in which case he "dials down" the volume by increasing the suppression effect of the helmet, cutting off more and more of the telepathic sensory input. Ordinarily, he leaves it set for medium power, a level that can shut out most of the background noise he normally picks up, reducing the "volume" to that of a medium sized crowd in a large room. At it's strongest setting, Dexter can comfortably walk through a large crowd with little to no bleed-through of the surrounding thoughts or emotions.
Description
Kid Psyche wears a suit of bright blue and crimson armor polished to a high shine. His helmet has a bright red, mirrored faceplate with fins on either side. He wears a long cape in the same red and blue.
In his civilian identity, Dexter is a young man, about 5' 8" tall with blonde hair and blue eyes. He usually dresses casually and it's not unusual to see him wearing a dark baseball cap. (The cap is modified to hold a miniature Psionic Suppression device, with much more limited capabilities than the one in his helmet. There is no "dial" to adjust the suppression and the power duration is limited to a few hours at most.
Personality
Kid Psyche is friendly but dislikes large crowds because of the psychic background noise he's constantly subjected to. He tends to get irritable and short tempered if he's around a large group of people for too long.
Detailed History
Growing up in Paragon City, Dexter Michaels saw his fair share of heroes in action almost daily. As a young child, he and his siblings used to play "superhero" and imagine that they too had super powers like their heroes on the Freedom Phalanx. To all concerned, Dexter was a typical teen-aged boy, living a normal life like millions of others. Dex's life took a dramatic turn the day the Crey mainframe identified him as a statistical anomoly - Dexter had never been sick a day in his life, and his family had an unusually low incidence of illness too. Never ones to pass up an opportunity for commercial gain, the Crey research department "requisitioned" Dexter and their security forces moved in to apprehend the boy.
During the scuffle, Dexter's father was shot by one of the attackers. Dex turned on the heavily armed man and without thinking, unleashed his fury. Clutching his head in agony, the agent quickly fell to the floor. Taking advantage of the confussion, Dex repeated his psychic blast, felling each of the Crey agents within seconds. He turned toward his father and waves of emerald energy swept from his hands and washed over the dying man. Instantly, the wounds vanished! Dexter's father quckly contacted the police who sent Sister Psyche out to the family to follow up while they hauled away the unconcious Crey agents. Sensing Dex's emerging psychic powers, Sister Psyche encouraged him to join a newly formed group of young heroes called The Youth League, where she knew his powers would be put to good use.
Soon after joining the Youth League, Dexter met another young hero named Psi Elixer. The two had nearly identical powers and quickly became fast friends. Within a few months of working together, Dexter and Charlie realized that their feelings for each other had grown beyond platonic friendship and they started dating.
After a terrifying confrontation with the villain Hallmark, Dexter withdrew into his mind, leaving his body in a catatonic state for months before his old mentor, Sister Psyche, was able to draw the frightened boy out. During that time, his fragmented consciousness refused to shirk his old duties; Kid Psyche's astral form emerged and continued to fight crime with the Youth League.
Within days of regaining consciousness, Dexter was dealt another traumatic blow when his boyfriend, Psi Elixer disappeared after his psychic powers began to strenghten rapidly and his control began to faulter. Months of frantic searching revealed virtually no clues. Dexter has since become more distant from his fellow teammates and seldom joins them on missions anymore, preferring solitude.
