"You lookin' for Lethe? The renegade? Another after the bounty, I take it. Yeah, I know of him. Never seen him, but I know of him. I'd be careful. Kid's a wild card, crazy as bat-shit, thrice spit out of Hades. He doesn't think like the rest of us. Used to, mind you, but not anymore.

Huh. Since you're keen on finding him, I'll give you an edge. I like your face. See, Lethe used to be a bit of a hard core celebrity 'round Spider City. Equivalent of a rock star. He was an Executioner and he was *good*. Kid was picked up in Boston a bit after his graduation from high school. Went by the name of Jackie O'Connor. Arachnos 'talent scouts' pinched him up with a lucrative contract. People back home didn't know why he left with the shady suits, but he did.

Fast-forward a good fifteen months later, Operative O'Connor walks out of the training camps in Grandville. From there, it was lightning-fast promotions for the kid. He was damn good. Brutal, efficient, and a genius at tactics. He shined in squad leadership, too. People joked, started callin' him the Achilles of Arachnos. Give him time and a handful of men, and he could work nightmares. Wasn't long before the Bane Network took notice. He got 'promoted', as all Bane spiders are, into their program, into their mind-net. Real Borg-shit goes on with them. Anyways, he took the name Lethe after that. If he was gunna be coined off like a Greek Hero, he'd be to the river Lethe as Achilles was to Styx. People stopped joking.

The Bane mind-net ensured perfect discipline and tactics with his assassins under him. Because of this, his already potent skills as a strategist became flawless. Under Lethe, their timing, execution, and withdrawal from every single contract was *too good*. Like friggin' ghosts. Murder ghosts! It took one month to obtain the rank of Executioner. It takes a few hard years for Banes to rise like that. But Lethe was a slick shock-commando thanks to his combat stratagems. With his rank, we was given his own unit called the Vermillion Scythe. They became Captain Mako's secret 'problem solvers', created to take out high profile capes in Paragon and Etoile who rubbed Mako the wrong way. Which, evidently, is all of them.

Well now. Obviously he went from Arachnos rock star to wanted renegade, yeah? Ha. This is where it gets good. So, out of the blue, along comes a starry eyed, visionary Longbow Lieutenant named Riley Cook. Cook was a psychic, and a staunch supporter of humanitarian methods of dealing with villain threats. She was also an activist with a few coins to rub, and supported hundreds of charity and welfare programs all across the globe. One of her programs was centered in Sharkhead. So, of course, giving hope to the people of Sharkhead rubbed Mako the wrong way. He works hard to keep his home bleak.

Stage is set. Lights go dark. The Vermillion Scythe infiltrates the base where Cook is stationed. They are personally led by their best, their leader, Lethe. His orders are to annihilate Cook and the rest of her ilk, 'for good laughs', by Mako.

But Cook is expecting retaliation from Mako. Psychic prescience can be useful, yeah? She also came up with a way to both defeat Mako's assassins, and perhaps 'fix' them as well, like most bleeding heart heroes do. So she waits. And sure enough, the Scythe appears, spear-headed by Lethe. The two lock eyes. Real western stand-off stuff. Lethe's about to come at her, spider-bat to the face style, when she attacks mentally. Her psychic blast misses him though, she was aiming for his mind-net. The unseen strings that bound his men to him, and him to his superior. She hit her real target head on, just as Lethe smashes into her. Luckily, he was so out of it from that split second of backlash, he didn't do much harm.

As for the Banes, well, the strings snapped. They all dropped like marionette's, gripped by mental backlash. For Cook, unfortunately, who just survived Lethe's blow, she was connected with the mind-net, hit full on by its unmitigated fierce power. She wasn't expecting it, wasn't conditioned for it, and it impaled her mind in a searing tsunami of psychic rage. She died some short seconds later.

From there... the story gets a bit tricky. Arachnos did its best to hide up the aftermath. I don't know how the Scythe's escaped, but they did. Most are still alive today, dissolved into other Bane units. As for Lethe. Well, Cook succeeded with him, I suppose. He was freed from Arachnos. His... sanity was a bit scrambled, I think. But he was freed. For some reason or another, he's now taken to hunting his old creation, the members of the Scythe. I can't tell you why. Mako himself probably can't tell you either. But, this is why Arachnos now hunts him as he hunts his old comrades.

That's all I have to say to you. Take it as you will. I'll just warn you again. A lot has happened to Lethe since that night with Cook. He fancies himself a Knight of Hades, a vigilante. Took the Achilles bit far. Bat-shit crazy, unpredictable, and mean. You aren't the first to hunt him, and you won't be the last. Kid's like a twisted carnival game. No way to win."
