Background

Sonya Cohen led a mostly normal fifteen years of life in a small apartment in Steel Canyon. Her father, who worked multiple jobs to keep his poor family out of Kings Row, was rarely around but cared deeply for them. Her mother was the general of the household making sure that her two children were raised in an appropriate manner. If things had stayed the same, Sonya would have likely lived her life and moved on in relative obscurity.

As a sophmore in Steel Canyon PS, she was enjoying life as a soccer player and a member of the school's Pom Pon squad. Her grades were reasonable and good enough to get her a potential scholarship at a university. Life seemed very predictable and satisfying. The highlight of her school days was getting asked to Prom by a Junior. He was suave, funny and most important, could drive. She was in heaven and planned the evening as thoroughly as any general laying out battle plans.

Unfortunately, life intervened as it often does. In the middle of the prom, a seeming drunk older man burst into the prom and staggered across the dance floor. As people scattered, he made a beeline for Sonya and grabbed her. Several people pushed him away but not before he said some gibberish into her ear and ran for the exit. As the prom got back underway, Sonya tried hard to recapture the magical evening. To the surprise of nearly everyone there, she burst into flames just before getting a kiss, setting most of the gym on fire and ruining the evening.

Developing Hero

With any chance of a normal social life ruined, Sonya sulked about for a couple of weeks. People tended to avoid her as well as her former boyfriend who didn't want anything to do with the crazy flamming girl. Her grades slipped and she avoided her extra ciricular activities. That was until the often reported School Abduction by the noted villian group The Council. Looking for easy extortion money, they had raided the school taking most of the students hostage and demanding huge sums of money.

While Sonya had not tried to use her powers, she felt helpless as her friends were held hostage. Deciding that it must be a gift of some sort, she acted... foolishly to save them. While her actions were unplanned and terribly uncordinated, she did manage to thwart the kidnappers and get the students released. It felt good enough that she decided to take up the hero mantle full time.
