Powers derived from gemstone to which Thornton was bonded. Gem granted god-like powers, but has a god-like sense of Justice that makes Thornton uncomfortably sensitive to injustice of all types, resulting in an internal struggle between the Gem's demand to mete out strict Justice, and Thornton's desire to exercise Mercy in many cases, to say nothing of dealing with the issues of transgressing mankind's laws against Vigilantism. |

February 23:
This marks the day of a new era in Egyptology, and will make our names in archaeology forevermore. The Rosetta Stone pales in comparison to the impact this find will have on the field. The Thornton Fragment, the partial wall of hieroglyphs I uncovered near Giza, pointed to this out-of-the-way corner of the 19th dynasty Egyptian empire, now current-day Nubia. That we could find the tomb within a mere year of searching despite it being completely buried under flood-plain sediments is owing to the translation skills of Dr. Moira Black. The Fragment described this exact location relative to an ancient, extinct volcano.
Today, we unearthed the top of a new pyramid, small, but completely intact, and the furthest from the heart of Egypt of any New Kingdom structure found to date. Finding the apex this morning, we dug non-stop until sundown, uncovering the first 10 feet. What makes this pyramid unique is that it has a myriad of symbols carved into the outer stone casing, including hieroglyphs and runic characters of unknown origins, alongside both standard 18th and 19th dynasty hieroglyph panels, as well as the well-understood Babylonian cuneiform. Moira, Dr. Black, has been furiously translating the panels covering the pyramid all day, and now lies sleeping in our cot. Our private celebration was quite exhausting, but I must record the details of today's find before I sleep.
The tale Moira translated is remarkable. This appears to be the tomb of a 'powerful' Egyptian archmage, a heretofore unknown court magician who was contemporary with Ramses II, and we appear to have found the first hard confirmation of the existence of Moses and the Israelites slaves, but Moira is driving herself crazy over the translations. They appear to claim that the tomb is actually a 'prison', and that the mage served many pharaohs, including Ramses I, Ramses II, and was present many decades earlier when a prisoner-slave named Joseph prophesied a great famine based on the dream of the Pharaoh, subsequently being made grand vizier of all Egypt for the term of fourteen years. This would appear to be a double-confirmation of both the origin of the Israelites, and their enslavement to the Egyptian Pharaohs, if the extreme long-life of the magician can be believed. This amazing confirmation of the biblical stories is of such significance that we have even begun to worry that rivals will claim we created this find, or at least carved the exterior panels of symbols ourselves. I shall send a request to M.J. that additional men be sent to document this find independently.
The last particularly odd feature of the pyramid is the engraving of what superficially resembles the 'Omniscient Eye' with circular 'glory' devices featured in the Great Seal of the United States, commonly seen on the U.S. dollar. This 'Eye' is present above an unfinished pyramid where the capstone would be on a finished pyramid. From my previous studies into the occult, in which I found no basis for anything like what we call 'magic' (see journals 1917-1919), I know that the 'unfinished pyramid' combined with the 'Omniscient Eye' was the invention of T.J., J.A., & B.F., along with the possible help of the artist who assisted them. Also, use of the 'Eye' itself only dates back to the European Renaissance, and represented an all-seeing Deity -- not a concept that meshes well with either the occult or the present state of Egyptology. (Incidentally, of these four men, only Franklin was a Mason, so the Mason connection is greatly overstated!) Furthermore, as seen in the diagram below, our find does not seem to be an 'Eye', but rather resembles a faceted gemstone. Thus I believe that there is a much more mundane explanation for the engraving. Nonetheless, it is unique, with an identical copy engraved upon each side of the capstone. - M.T.

Another exhausting day of digging and translating, as more hieroglyphic panels were uncovered. Moira is still going over her notes, so I'm taking this opportunity to make today's entry before we go to bed. She has a new theory with regard to the mage in light of the additional decades of history we uncovered to day. Instead of a single mage, she believes the stories are referring to the current wielder of a talisman, possibly the gemstone that figures prominently throughout the panels, and appears to be emblazoned on the capstone.
