Makis is a pre-cognitive gunslinger and a member of the vigilante supergroup The Bonesquad. He is a Natural Hero in the sense that his "powers" are largely the product of intense training, discipline, and technological gadgets; however, all of his abilities are enhanced by his ability to constantly see his immediate future and react to his advantage. His mode of combat consists in equal parts of the Gun Kata, a martial art based on the short range use of pistols and systematic evasion, a particularly violent combination of Krav Maga and Aikido, Free Running which allows him to enter and exit combat as well as traverse the city as effectively as possible, and the use of various bladed weapons, explosives, and technological gadgets – all of these augmented to a nearly superhuman level by his extremely reliable foresight.
OOC Concept & Background
I initially developed Makis in the very early days of the City of Heroes community as a combination of two common fictional archetypes - the action hero and the wise mentor (e.g. if Neo and the Oracle were the same person). He was first and foremost a concept character, I knew what he was before I knew who he was. However, since then the character has taken on a life of his own, becoming more then I ever imagined him to be. Aside from the typical origin story and background information, Makis developed primarily through my own internal moral questions. In order to flesh out his personality, worldview, and manner of thinking, I had to morally justify the idea of a pre-cognitive (and thus preemptively judicious: see Minority Report) and essentially murderous vigilante. How can you have a "hero" who is actually a cold-blooded killer punishing people for crimes they often haven't even committed yet? It is a hard question to answer and still feel good about the character. Moreover, when I first stumbled upon City of Heroes, I was particularly taken by the idea of actually being a hero and therefore I initially modeled Makis' basic personality, looks, and part of his history on myself... albeit in an exaggerated "comic book" sort of way; however, the moral dilemmas that he faced as I developed him began to vastly differentiate him from me. In hindsight I view this as an extremely important moment both in and out of character because I inadvertently made him far more unique then I had originally intended him to be. He was no longer "me" in any sense of the word.
I’m going to be honest here – Makis is a ruthless, repellent, morally post-conventional cold-blooded killer; a manipulative, egotistic know-it-all who can see the future; a reckless, though seemingly invulnerable risk taker; and a gun slinging, throat cutting, explosive force of nature. As for his enemies - He will fuck you up. And if he doesn’t kill you, he’ll lecture you about how fucked up the world is and why you’re one of the reasons for it. And you know what? I’m OK with that, I know that he isn’t me…
