Background
Born a hooker's bastard and raised on the streets of St. Martial, Maolan was a natural thug and bully. Though he never ran with any formal gangs, he was often seen moving with packs of stray kids, taking what he wanted, usually by force. His callous attitude and willingness to do violence on anything that got in his way made him stand out, but somehow he never came to the attention of anyone who tried to make anything of him. Mao's opinion of his mother is quite evidenced in his casual references to her occupation, a label he hangs on many women.
The only thing that Mao seems to care about, other than money, is his younger sister Rhysel Callinan. Though he doesn't show her love and affection in the true sense, anyone who's watched the two of them together knows better than to threaten or harm her.
Occupation
Mao taught Rhysel skills with blades and the two of them began a life of crime. Rhysel, always quieter and stealthier than Mao, scouted ahead and found what they sought. Mao would follow, and when the inevitable finally happened and someone spotted them, he would do whatever it took to get them free. Eventually, they picked up a third partner, Julian, to handle security and technical issues. With that addition, the three became a significant threat to many forms of wealth in St. Martial.
In the Zig
Eventually, they picked the wrong house to hit and were captured. All three of them ended up convicted of their crimes and sent to the Zig. Mao's size and predilection for easy violence landed in him solitary, but no one is certain that this would have contained him even had the Breakout not occurred. He took advantage of the chaos and vanished into the Rogue Isles to resume his former occupation.
Affiliations
Mao eventually came to the attention of Franco Mancini, an officer in Inevitable Evolution. After careful evaluation, Franco accepted Mao into the organization. Mao never rose within the ranks of that group, but his activities only confirmed the suspicions of the authorities that IE was trouble.
Recently, rumors have surfaced that Maolan and several others within IE have left to form a new group, Phoenix Insurrection. Mao is apparently in charge of some aspect of that group, and it's uncertain at this time how strong a force this organization will become.
Known Associates
Tumultuous Jade was most likely involved in releasing Mao from the Zigg, but suspicions are that she was more concerned for Rhysel than her brother. Jade shepherded the two for a short time after they escaped and may have been the one to bring Mao to Franco's attention.
Unleashed Force and Mao seem like two peas in a pod, but there are some key differences. While both are violent and prone to killing on principle, Mao's less emotional about his work.
Soul Harbinger most likely hooked up with Mao while the two of them were in Inevitable Evolution. Though they are seen together often enough for notice, no one knows how well they actually work together.
Shadowed Twilight, again someone most likely connected to Mao through Inevitable Evolution, most likely works with him in order to lessen the results of the violence Mao brings. That, or perhaps she thinks she can change him.
Rhysel Callinan, Mao's younger sister, a convicted cat burglar, is a quiet young lady who inevitably does what her brother tells her to do. Most people who pay any attention to the two quickly realize that though she's a potential weakness for Mao, it would be unwise to test that theory without plenty of backup.
Not Always Kind Thoughts on Mao
"Mao...yeah...he's an odd one. Once you figure out what he wants and how he works, then you can decide if you want to deal with his brand of implacable violence. Just watch those blades...he's really pretty good with them. Oh, and insult his mother all you want...he does it all the time." - Tumultuous Jade
