History
Roqette Mann was born on April 9, 1996 in the Paragon City borough of Baumtown to Dr. David Mann, a cybernetics engineer and Jeanette Mann, a geologist originally from France. Born with an extreme hemoglobin deficiency, Roqette suffered from many ailments growing up and was constantly in and out of hospitals. Even at her best, she was undertaking regular treatments just to keep her immune system up and running. At age 5, when the Rikti Invasion of Paragon City occurred, Roqette's home was destroyed when the Rikti devastated Baumtown. Roqette's mother was killed in the attack, physically and mentally traumatizing the young girl to the point where she fell into a coma for six days. When she awoke in a hospital in Steel Canyon a week later, she was forced to remain in the hospital in quarantine for the next three month as her immune system had been severely weakened.
For the next nine years, Roqette was constantly monitored as her immune system never quite fully recovered from the events 2002. Though she managed to live a relatively normal existence, every injury she sustained, no matter how minor, became a major cause for concern. Even something as small as a paper cut meant a visit to the clinic. Due to her frailty, she grew up with few friends and was not able to enjoy her childhood the way her peers were. She became very insular and withdrawn, often sticking to her bedroom and reading or writing or listening to music. Her father, an expert in robotics and cybernetics, constructed various robotic playmates for her hoping to fill the gap left by her non-existent social life. Ultimately though, Roqette never took to the robots, and preferred solitude.
Roqette's life took a drastic change shortly before her 16th birthday. While on her way home from school, she was crossing the street when she was sideswiped by a vehicle making an illegal turn in the intersection. Bouncing off the car's fender, she fell backward onto the pavement and hit the back of her head against the pavement with enough force that it caused a concussion. Because of her weakened bone structure, the initial impact with the car snapped several of her ribs. Although an average, healthy individual may have walked away from the accident with a few bruises and a headache, Roqette fell into a deep coma that she was not expected to recover from. Desperate to save his daughter's life, Dr. Mann spent countless days in his lab trying to find a solution to his daughter's ailment. Months went by, and Roqette showed no signs of improvement. Her body was slowly beginning to deteriorate, and the medical staff were forced to put her on a life support system that would provide oxygen to her blood, while also cleaning out any bacteria that might pose a severe risk to her. This life support system was what gave Dr. Mann his inspiration to create a life support suit that would essentially function to conduct constant repairs on his daughter's body 24/7. Using the latest in nano-machinery, the suit would be fitted with a nano-replicator device that would hook directly into Roqette's circulatory system, almost like a second heart. Instead of pumping blood however, the device would produce nano-machines from raw material. Those nanites would infest Roqette's blood and spread throughout her body, rebuilding damaged tissue, destroying viruses and enhancing her immune system.
Approximately 8 months after the accident, Dr. Mann's cyber-suit and nano-replicator were complete. Almost the instant Roqette's body was placed within it, she demonstrated immediate signs of improvement. The nano-machines reacted quickly to her damaged form, but worked beyond expectations. Instead of simply 'healing' the damaged organs and tissue, they began replacing them with stronger, more durable synthetic materials. Her blood was turned into a bio-synthetic gel, and nearly 85% of her internal organs were re-synthesized. When Roqette finally awoke several hours later, she experienced a surge of energy and practically crashed through the walls of the hospital as she took her 'new body' out for a test. Not only had the nano-machines healed her, they'd made her physically stronger and more robust.
Unfortunately, there was one major drawback that Dr. Mann had not accounted for. Although the nanites had effectively cured Roqette of her anemia, they were also now solely responsible for keeping her alive. As her blood had been turned into a synthetic and could only be produced with a constant flow of nanites entering her heart via the replicator device, the girl could no longer subsist without the device and thus could no longer remove the cyber suit it was attached to. Initially this proved to be a source of considerable frustration to both the girl and her father. However, when Dr. Mann realized the nano-machines could be ordered to alter the physical properties of the suit to make it appear as different clothing (or even invisible), and because Roqette's mostly synthetic body no longer produced solid waste, her permanent enclosure within the suit was no longer an issue.
Present Day
It didn't take long for Roqette to become fully acclimated with her suit. It provided her with protection from the elements, strengthened her body to super-human levels, and made her highly resistant to damage or injury. But its potential was far greater than Dr. Mann had ever anticipated. Not merely a life-support suit, it could be utilized as a weapon as well. Roqette was able to re-purpose the nanites, turning her body into a living weapon, capable of firing highly destructive energy blasts from her hands and body, as well as giving her the strength to punch through walls. She realized she could do so much more with the suit than simply use it as a means to live. It was with this thought that Roqette decided to use her new found abilities to fight the criminal element within Paragon City.
Knowing her father would never agree to such a thing, Roqette had the nanites alter the suit's appearance. Taking the example of a character from popular culture, she designed a suit that appeared virtually identical to that of Mega Man from the video game franchise of the same name. The suit gave her both a new identity while concealing her true one. This included a helmet with full facial shield and a visor that provided her with targeting and tactical information.
Assuming the name 'Mega Grrl', Roqette was soon off on her first mission as Paragon City's newest hero. After a number of battles with some of the city's lesser villains, Mega Grrl has established her first foothold in the city and has gain a small amount of recognition. This recognition eventually got back to her father who recognized his creation when he saw the helmeted girl on his television screen. Despite a degree of trepidation over allowing his own daughter to fight the worst the city has to offer, he understood Roqette's desire to fight crime and defend the city. Feeling guilt over his own inability to protect Roqette's mother, Dr. Mann allowed her to continue to operate as Mega Grrl, and offers her support when he can, including giving her upgrades to her suit.
Personality
Roqette is friendly but shy, having had few friends growing up due to her condition. She is somewhat uncomfortable in social situations because of a lack of experience, but is generally approachable and talkative once she's been engaged. At the same token, she appears to have little patience for irritants and doesn't mind telling people off who are bothersome. She particularly doesn't like being called a 'robot' and will occasionally lose her temper at those who refer to her as such.
Mk. I Cybernetic Life Support Suit
A highly sophisticated piece of technology created by Dr. David Mann, the Mark I Cybernetic Life-Support Suit was designed with his daughter in mind. The source of the suit's power comes from the nano-replicator system located in its chest area. The replicator system connects to a wearer's central circulatory system and produces nano-machines directly into his/her bloodstream. The nanites are designed to provide an array of functions, including cellular reconstruction and synthesization. Because the nanites cannot replicate organic matter, they replace dead cellular material with synthetic facsimile. The synthetic cells operate exactly as the naturally organic ones, and the replacement goes unnoticed by the suit wearer. Due to Roqette's condition, the nanites were forced to radically synthesize her blood in order to achieve their task in maintaining her health. Because she was in a state of constant cellular decay at the time that she was placed in the suit, much of her original organic cells were synthesized, effectively turning her into a synthetic human. This dramatically improved her health, as well as had the unexpected side effect of giving her enhanced strength, stamina and resistance to bodily injury. The drawback was however that she was now interred within the suit permanently. Because her body requires a constantly flow of nanites in order to be sustainable, she must remain hooked into the suit's nano-replicator system.
The suit also serves a number of other purposes. Because Roqette's skin is still fully organic and prone to infection, the suit offers protection from the environment. It also monitors her vitals and allows the nanites to determine the location of trauma points in order to effect repairs. The suit's material can be 're-assembled' into different configurations, allowing the appearance of different clothing. One of the suit's most important features is its ability to absorb, focus and discharge energy. In a manner of speaking, the suit acts as a solar collector- it utilizes solar energy to power itself. However, because the amount of energy it absorbs throughout a typical day is more than is actually require to effect basic functions, a considerable amount is merely 'stored' in reserve. That reserve energy can be used for offensive purposes by being built up in a single point (usually the hands) and then released. The resultant energy blasts can vary in yield from producing a concussive force, to atomizing anything they come into contact with. Modifications to the suit's configuration can also enable the wearer to perform other feats by manipulating the energy reserves in different ways. One of these feats is levitation and sustained flight which Roqette is able to accomplish by producing a kind of energy field around her body. That energy field warps the space around her body, and she is 'pulled' through the air.
The helmet serves a dual purpose, both to protect Roqette's head from trauma but also feed her tactical and vital data through its visor. The helmet's primary sensor conducts continuous environmental scans of the area, while also keeping track of the wearer's own vital signs, turning that information into readable data. This aides in her accuracy.
