I came home from school and dropped my bag by the door.
"Mom, I'm home and school still sucks".
I got no reply so I ventured into the kitchen to raid the fridge.
Let's see... beer... beer... and.... beer.
Would it be too much to ask to buy a carton of milk every once in a while? Or even a soda?
I didn't even need to ask that out loud to get an answer. Yes, it was too much to ask, and asking would only get me smacked up again.
Screw it...
I grabbed a beer and popped it open. If I was going to get hit again tonight I might as well get a buzz on first. It doesn't take much for an eleven year old to get a buzz on.
I heard some noises from upstairs and went to see what it was. I already had a good idea but I was curious about the details, like 'who' or even 'how many'.
Mom's door doesn't have a handle, just a big circular whole where a handle would usually be found. I peeked through.
Yah, that's what I thought she was doing, but who's the 'lucky guy' this ti... oh... oh hell no. Not him.
I didn't even bother to grab clothes. Well, just my favorite hat. I emptied my book bag and tossed a couple of beers in, a jar of penutbutter and half a loaf of bread. At least it was fresh. Who knew how long it would be before I came back... if ever.
The guy Mom was 'entertaining' was KNOWN. Like everyone in the neighborhood knew him. He wasn't a nice guy. Kids had a habit of vanishing around him and showing up in the Rogue Islands. As long as he was there, I wasn't going to be.
I dodged the zombies and robe guys and made my way to the train station. I just sat there for a while, looking at the statue of Cyrus Thompson.
Then BOOM!!! You know what happens. The sky turns green, drop ships show up, then it’s just a big Rikti Party all over the place.
They say that being confronted by Life & Death situations can trigger genetic mutation.
All I knew is that I just wasn't going to have it.
Mr. Pedo-pimp was NOT going to sell me to the Rogue Islands.
The zombies where NOT going to chop me up for parts.
The robe guys were NOT going to sacrifice me on top of a building in the Gish.
And the gorram Rikti were NOT going to splat me today!
Heroes were around me and a few looked at me funny but they were too busy to figure me out. I was glowing yellow and I was hitting Rikti so it was all good for them. And every Rikti I hit either went down or went flying. Like, a full city block flying. I was suddenly Super Kid. Super Megan. Megan Mighty!! Yah, that was hot, Megan Mighty!
Only problem is I got tired really really fast and... well, everything got kind of fuzzy. Then I was inside the tram station and a couple of Heroes where standing over me. I was lying down but I don't remember how I got there.
"She's just a kid"!
"Did you see how hard she hits"?
"Somebody has to get this kid home".
"NO"!!!
"No, please," I said. The sky wasn't green anymore and I didn't hear any fighting. It was sunny again. Oh... wow... the sun!
"Take me outside please".
Somebody picked me up and carried me out into the sun. It felt... amazing. Like life itself flowing back into my muscles.
