Behind The Music
Early Childhood
Young Melodie really didn't have a very different childhood from most little girls. Her parents were both professionals working in Paragon City; her father Michael is a physician, and her mother Christine is an electrical engineer. So, as might be expected from two such scientifically-minded people, Melodie went completely the opposite direction.
Always an exuberant and vivacious child, little Melodie was the definition of extrovert. She'd sing, she'd dance, she'd do whatever it took to get people's attentions (and their cameras) on her. The phrases everyone always used involved some variant on "Oh, she's so cute!" or "Isn't she a sweetheart?!" And she was, really. Golden blonde hair and big blue eyes, even from a young age she was cute enough to catch the eye.
By the time she was only eight, it was obvious that her fascination with singing was more than just a childhood interest. She loved to sing, and got quite a few compliments on it. One of her mother's friends recommended that she take voice classes, and even at her young age, the teacher was surprised by the range and strength of her voice. She took her classes, and learned how to play the piano as well as sing, though singing was clearly where her true interest lie.
Celebrity Comes Knocking
Melodie's break comes through the variety/talent show Star Search. When she was 12, her parents entered her in the junior vocalist category, and Melodie absolutely dazzled the judges in her performances, becoming the only performer in Star Search history to receive perfect five scores on all of her appearances. The show was generally watched by agents and scouts, and it didn't take them long at all to be competing over who had the right to sign the pretty young blonde with the incredible voice.
In the end, it was Disney who had the most chips to throw in the pot. They were looking for a young singer to replace their previous Mouseketeers Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, and to be someone they could use to build a show around to try and grab the tween market. Melodie wasn't just going to be a singer...she was going to be an actress too!!
Tween Starlet
Personality
Basic Overview
Melodie was considered a bit of a lolita in her later teens, something that played into a full-on sex-kitten vibe in her music, outfits, and dancing now. She's been a celebrity ever since she was a small child, and so she's never really needed to deal with the real world, and is generally considered a bit immature for her age. She's also considered more than a bit spoiled; while she's rather altruistic towards people, she very much expects to get her way, and moves through the world with that sort of air around her. Balking her on an issue leads to a full on temper-tantrum (and you really don't want a woman with sonic powers screaming at you.
Myers-Briggs Analysis: ENTP
Words, ideas and possibilities spew effortlessly from them. Words are their best friends. They dance around ideas, the more, the merrier. Imaginative, spontaneous, original and enthusiastic, they have a knack for seeing other possibilities, other dreams and options. The world is never as it is but as it could be, as if it were but an artists sketch begging for colour. They initiate change and often are prone to trespassing a few known boundaries to take themselves and others where no one has been before. The status quo tends to lack inspiration.
When inspired, they are fearless and tireless. Their energy will know no limits unless red tape takes over. Routine drags them down. Their faith in possibilities and belief in the benefit of change often inspire others to follow. They are challenging, ingenious and innovative. They will give their best to what appears to be an impossible challenge, a place unknown to man or beast.
They use metaphors, stories, images and analogies to make their point. They love theories and often shape their own. They see patterns emerging. Keen improvisers, they are rarely caught off guard, there is always something up their sleeve. The sky is the only limit.
They are sometimes entertainers, artists or otherwise engaged in public demonstrations that allow their ideas to bloom. Their greatest difficulty is not in initiating projects but in choosing among so many possibilities, setting realistic boundaries, establishing priorities and correctly assessing resources.
The Mind Behind The Mask
Of course, everything above is all a part of the created fiction that is Melodie. Andrew is rather mortified by the situation, and certainly didn't intend to end up a girl, much less one that looks like this. The net result is that people meeting Melodie will find her to be somewhat more awkward, reserved, and shy than she's commonly made out to be...certainly not the flirtatious, sexy girl she's presented herself as in her myriad of interviews. Andrew is still trying to find some way to keep the "fame" and "powers" part of things without the "girl" part of things, and just isn't sure how to go about that, not to mention being equally uncertain what that might bode with Emeshalia, who he doesn't want to ever risk losing.
Powers And Abilities
Powers
Vibratory Repulsion
Melodie uses her voice to actually set up an oscillation of air molecules around someone. The net effect is that it actually creates a "cushion" of air around the person, which helps to deflect physical force. While effective, the cushion lasts for only a limited amount of time before dispersing into the atmosphere at large.
Protective Echoes
This is actually less a force of physics, and more one of magic itself. When Melodie uses her Vibratory Repulsion power on someone, at the same time as it's agitating air molecules, it's also bathing that person in a cone of the magical power that her voice conveys. Just as the agitated air molecules help to shield against physical trauma, the magical "echo" the sound of her voice conveys helps to stop various energies, from thermal extremes to lasers to magic from reaching the person inside. The magic is tied to the same agitated air molecules, though...when they disperse, this power does as well.
Ripple Effect
This requires a slightly different pitch of her voice than her protective applications, but it still uses echoes. She focuses her voice on a person, literally using the space between their molecules to create a resonance...an echo. That echo then ripples off the person, radiating out from them in all directions. Where it strikes, it begins to weaken molecular bonds, literally rendering things in the ripple effect more fragile and breakable. The main downside to this is that unlike the earlier molecular agitation, this requires a constant, super-low frequency emission from Melodie at the target. While that doesn't stop her from speaking, singing, or using her other abilities due to the polyphonic nature of her voice, it does tire her out quickly.
Sonic Shriek
No subtlety here. This is one of the damaging applications of Melodie's voice. It is quite literally a shriek, starting in the upper octaves and rising quickly through the hypersonic ranges. Crystal and the like shatter nearly instantly, and the hypersonic resonance causes weakening in the molecular bonds like her Ripple Effect. It's a tight-band, focused sonic emission; anyone except the target isn't likely to hear so much as a peep. The target, on the other hand, is almost certainly going to notice the combination of hypersonic shrilling and cellular disruption.
Sonic Howl
Whereas Sonic Shriek is a surgeon's tool of sound, Sonic Howl is the sledgehammer. Rather than causing the cellular disruptions, here Melodie causes movement and vibration of air molecules, in a cone in front of her. It's the same sort of thing she uses to protect people, except that here, all the air molecules are moved in one direction, with great force. The net effect is like getting hit by a linebacker. In the same way as the defensive applications, the air molecules are charged with the magical force of her voice, lending not only brute physical force, but magical energy impact as well.
Vibratory Levitation
Well, it was a natural extension of her other abilities. Having learned how to agitate and move air molecules around her body, Melodie has learned how to essentially wrap herself in one of those agitated air cushions, then apply downward thrust. Not only does it make her harder to hit, since the agitated air repels impacts slightly, but it allows her to float, gliding slowly through the air in the direction she applies thrust. She won't win any speed records here, but still, it's flight, if slow flight.
Vibration Bubble
The same application that Melodie uses to protect an individual, only more wide-spread. This bathes an entire area in her protective cushioning, and magically-charged energy. As might be expected, it's a draining use of her abilities, keeping the field up. But while the bubble is up, it provides a strong measure of protection to anyone inside it from most any incoming damage.
Abilities
Martial Arts
Melodie has some training in self-defense. She knows the standard "places to hit someone who's grabbed you", but beyond that, most of her training was "deliver a volley of fast strikes, then get ready to run". Usually, if she has to resort to this, things are pretty bad already; she prefers to stay at range and make use of her voice. But, it remains an "in last resort" sort of thing.
Equipment
Pocket D VIP Pass
As really shouldn't surprise anyone, the world-famous superstar singer and superheroine has an all-access, all-hours pass to Pocket D, handed out to their most desired clients. She really doesn't know the first thing about how it works...all she knows is that you grab the little credit-card-like card and press the insignia. One laser-light show later, and *POOF*, you're teleported to the exclusive lounge at "The D".
Cellular Regenerator
A new device that D.A.T.A. is working on, the Cellular Regenerator is a small piece of hand-held technology that most of the geekly persuasion would probably call a tricorder. What it actually does is incorporate Rikti cellular regeneration technology, commonly employed by their Guardians. While the device has a limited range, within that range it can provide minor healing benefits to the targeted individual.
Blackwand
This wand of cold black metal was a weapon used by one of the Circle of Thorns mages that Melodie and Emeshalia defeated early in her career. Through sheer chance, the vibrational frequencies Melodie can hit with her voice are the same as the dimensional frequencies the mage used to store the wand extradimensionally. When he suicided to prevent his capture, the wand keyed in on her voice. Now, she can call the wand from its storage space with a note, and return it the same way. While it's clearly an object of dark magic, and thus Melodie tries to avoid using it (because Emeshalia goes off on a tear about it), sometimes it's the difference between victory and defeat, and options are limited.
TrueHeart Foundation Transporter
One of the perks you can manage to pull off when you're officially registered with the city (and when you donate several million dollars a years to its coffers) is a transport override authorization through the mediport system. This small device is actually affixed to Melodie's keychain. When the button is depressed, it builds up power, then routes her directly to the Foundation offices. Beats commuting by a long shot!
TrueHeart Executive Bodyguard Transporter
One of the perks she has as a superstar, and CEO, is that she the same transport override which lets her teleport herself to the foundation can also be keyed to transport her bodyguards to her, in a pinch. This is a fairly short-range ability; it won't work further than a single city zone. But with it, anyone Melodie's given one of the special receivers to is transported instantly to her side.

Limitations
Entomophobia
Melodie is not a fan of insects. At all. They're creepy, they're crawly, they violate your personal space and touch you when and where you don't want to be touched. This is very nearly a full-bore phobia for her, and she turns into an utter girl when she runs across them, squealing, scrambling away as far and as fast as she can. Flies, bees and the like have her swatting frantically at the air, usually while screeching. Mayfly season is a particular terror for her, and she'll even outright refuse to go outside, make up excuses, pretend to be sick and more for those few days.
Vocal Focus
Virtually all Melodie's powers focus around her magically-enhanced voice. While it would be very difficult to strain her voice through mundane means, overuse of her powers, as well as simple mundane laryngitis, could strain her vocal cords, rendering almost all of her powers completely unusable. Thankfully, she has enough experience as a singer to recognize the feeling when they're getting there, and then tries to back off.
Overly Blessed
Mother Nature was, shall we say, a little too giving when it came to Melodie and puberty. Her figure is extreme, and it's widely rumored that it was one of the causes behind the cancelation of Perfect Melodie (not fitting in with Disney's wholesome image). She plays up the sex-kitten act for the general public these days, but the backaches don't make it any easier to put up with.
Trivia
- Melodie's voice is actually polyphonic in nature...that is to say, she can produce multiple voices simultaneously. This allows her to speak while still using her powers, or to produce a hypersonic or subsonic underlay to her voice, as well as to actually sing harmonies with herself!
- Melodie's voice and polyphonic abilities allow her to underlie her speech with subliminal messages very easily. This enables her to hypnotize easily susceptible individuals fairly easily. (NOTE: And when she's high enough level, is the justification for taking the Psychic Mastery Ancillary Pool.)
- Melodie has a single tattoo, a pattern of abstract lines at the small of her back.
- As of 2008, Melodie owns 100 pairs of shoes and 30 pairs of boots.
- Melodie has been made into a Barbie doll. The ‘Red Carpet Glam Melodie Heart Doll’, is wearing a polka-dot dress and red satin sash.
- Melodie's Most Wanted CD debuted at no. 1 and has been certified platinum.
- At a young age, Melodie studied Cecchetti ballet.
- Melodie's powers can hit any note within the human range, as well as reaching well into the subsonic and hypersonic domains. This enables her to sing in virtually any range needed, anything from mezzo-soprano to basso profundo.
- Melodie's powers also make her an excellent vocal mimic. While she has to practice to get a sound or voice down right, once she's done so she can reproduce it perfectly, sounding exactly like whatever it is she's attempting to mimic, anything from a person to birdsong to a police siren.
