Early Years
Mindwing (A.k.a. Jennifer Hu), was born to Japanese immigrant Penju Hu and his wife, Warrant Officer Deborah Wilson. Deborah and Penju were married in Japan, where Deborah was stationed with the United States Marine’s Third Expeditionary Forces as a staff Empath. When Deborah received her promotion to Lieutenant, she was re-assigned to the states. Four months later, Penju joined her and together they took up residence in Paragon City. Jennifer began to show signs of mental powers as early as two years old. Deborah, being a registered Empath, wanted better than the life of a costumed super hero or military service for her daughter; used all of the powers at her command to suppress Jennifer’s mental abilities.
This proved quickly to be too much for Deborah as Jennifer’s powers began to grow rapidly. It was during this time, that the gap between mother and daughter became its greatest and Jennifer became exceptionally close to her father, Penju. At the young age of seven, Jennifer was able to project and hear thoughts for several miles around her. If it wasn’t for the soft voice and kind words of her father Jennifer most likely would have gone insane from the myriad of voices she could hear in her head. Many times it was Penju who sat with his ‘Little bird’ while she lie in a catatonic state fighting against the tides of the thousands of minds that would unwittingly assault her. For nine long years Jennifer lived in a constant state of flux, one day being able to deal with her powers; hiding them from everyone and ignoring the voices; the next, absent from school as she fell into another bout of catatonia. Jennifer’s abilities were so pronounced at sixteen that she rarely spoke out loud, often times mistaking speaking telepathically for speaking with her mouth. Penju had done what he could to help his daughter focus her abilities, but always it would draw the ire of Deborah, so, in large part, Jennifer’s abilities went untrained.
The Key Encounter
It should be noted that Jennifer did attend public school, where she was often subject to the rigors of both a ‘normal’ childhood and those of one hiding a ‘gift’. This caused her to skip classes and entire days on occasion. It was on one such day that Jennifer’s life would take a turn her mother was hoping to avoid. It was on this day that Jennifer ran into the midst of a common street robbery and was subsequently attacked by the four Hellions that were perpetrating the robbery. Reacting out of fear and self-defense, Jennifer killed three of her attackers. The fourth was rendered a vegetable. Jennifer herself was stabbed and nearly died from the injuries sustained in the fight. Unfortunately, use of an unregistered superpower in commission of a Felony is itself a crime and the four month long legal battle that ensued ended with a guilty verdict on all counts and Jennifer branded a super powered killer.
Development
One would assume that Jennifer’s life had taken a turn for the worse as she headed off to the Zig escorted by sheriff’s deputies and telepaths; but it did not. The Zig was most likely the best place for Jennifer to go. There, she met two women who would become lifelong friends despite their differences, Margaret (Red Bandit) Killian and Tammy (Mistress Mor’d Mayhem) Reynolds took the young and very scared girl under their wings. The next twenty four months saw Jennifer blossom in both book learning and social skills as all of her powers were suppressed by the Zigursky’s suppression fields. Once released from the Zigursky, Jennifer, under the direction of her father and parole officer; registered her powers with G.I.F.T. and began to look for individuals that could help her control her powers better.
It was shortly after registering herself as Mindwing (much to her mother’s chagrin), that Jennifer met with representatives from the New Age Heroes. While with the N.A.H. Jennifer’s powers flourished under the tutelage of the established heroes there. Her abilities proved the linchpin in many of the N.A.H.’s early successes. One of the most notable endeavors was her duel with Ghost Widow distracting the Villain and subsequent embarrassment that it caused during a raid on the Cap Au Diable power station. The two, Mindwing and Ghost Widow, would go on to do battle several times during Mindwing’s career. Throughout her early career as a hero in Paragon City, Jennifer worked tirelessly to assist heroes as she could, referring to herself only as a ‘helper’, never once using the title of hero. Often times deflecting success off to the others that were with her, she refused to take the credit for any single exploit.
Mindwing’s motives became unclear when she openly attacked a police contingent guarding ‘Big Mike’, an informant involved directly with the Family crime syndicate. Using her status as a hero, Jennifer entered the building under the false pretext that she was there to assist the officers in guarding the man only to turn and attack them. Stunned, the officers did their best to defend themselves, but in the end fourteen of them died from the injuries they received that day. It later came to light that the act had actually been perpetrated by her Praetorian double, Mind-Storm. The two never had a chance to meet face to face however, as Mindwing quickly moved to be reunited with her friends Red Bandit & Mistress Mor’d Mayhem in the Rogue Isles. It was here that Mindwing’s past finally caught up with her and in an epic battle on Mercy Island, Red Bandit & Mistress Mor’d Mayhem were both killed while Jennifer was subdued by a contingent of Fortunata and brought before Ghost Widow where she was ‘convinced’ to become one of the Villain’s operatives.
The Widow Hu
Jennifer’s prowess as a Fortunata was formidable; she quickly advanced within the ranks and within months gained the rank of Widow. Dusk Widow became a name to be feared by Villain and Hero alike, but still, Jennifer’s personality came through, as on more than one occasion it’s rumored that a widow fitting Dusk Widow’s description was seen meting out justice to various villain groups throughout the isles. Jennifer’s mother, Deborah Wilson-Hu was beside herself with grief, blaming herself for her daughter’s plight. Deborah tried on more than one occasion to have herself assigned to any operation that would allow her a chance to be deployed to the Rogue Isles. Jennifer’s father never went on record as doubting his daughter, stating on many occasions that she had done what she felt needed doing at the time.
In time, it would be revealed that Penju’s faith in his daughter was not misplaced. During the Praetorian invasions of the Primal Plane Jennifer led a contingent of Arachnos to assist in the defense of Founder’s Falls. It was during this battle, her double; Mind-Storm was killed by the invasion leader Praetor Tina Redmond. It was Jennifer that struck the killing blow on the Praetor only after the sister heroes, Arcana Tarot and the Praetor’s double Daughter Dawn (A.k.a. Dr. Tina Redmond) were severely wounded. Jennifer used the cover of troops returning to steal a Flyer and return to Paragon. She attempted, un-successfully, several times to turn herself in to authorities but no charges could ever be brought against her (It was later determined that Ms. Tina Redmond had garnered her immunity through the aggressive use of a team of lawyers numbering no less than 45 strong).
Jennifer proved herself time and again a true hero as Dusk-Widow. The training she had received from Arachnos and joining with the minds of the other Fortunata did much to focus her skills into a fine edge, which she used to great effect on the villains in Paragon. During this time, a rise in Banished Pantheon activity became focused on Jennifer’s longtime friend and partner Laura Doucet. Laura, a practicing Mambo (Good Voodoo priestess), had nearly become one of the pantheon’s spirits of sorrow when she was young, and was again drawn to Dark Astoria. Frantic to find her friend, Jennifer used her Clairvoyance to find Laura in the hellish place. Unfortunately for Jennifer, Laura’s mother, Renee Doucet (a Bocor – Evil Voodoo Priestess) had secured the services of Ghost Widow. Jennifer was able to free her friend but all reports say she lost her life in the ensuing fight with her longtime adversary after using her own medical transporter to transport her friend to safety. Jennifer’s body was retrieved by her mentor, Daughter Dawn, who recounted the story of Jennifer’s heroism to anyone who would listen. It’s reported that there was a heated conversation between Daughter Dawn and Deborah Wilson-Hu, and that as of the writing of this synopsis the two have not spoken since.
Re-Appearance
One would think; that a death at the hands of Arachos’ highest handmaiden would be the end of the story for Jennifer Hu but in truth, it is just the beginning. Shortly after her ‘death’, Jennifer Hu appeared again on the rosters of the New Age Heroes. Police investigations into the falsification of her own death lead to an injunction and subsequent exhuming of her grave. Again, only sketchy information about what actually happened is available as most records of the incident and people involved have been sealed or sworn to secrecy by the vast phalanx of attorneys Jennifer’s friend Dr. Tina Redmond commands. Jennifer has again taken up her mantle of Mindwing; putting to use all of her skills she has learned over the course of the last few years. She has proven herself to be a very capable and adaptive hero on the street on many occasions. Shortly after her appearance, Jennifer tried out for and successfully completed all prerequisite courses to become a police officer, a position she initially accepted but then later turned down to become a full time hero and consultant to the police force in the wake of the two sisters, Dr. Tina Redmond and Arcana Tarot's disappearance.
Closing
Mindwing is currently a full member of the super group known as New Age Heroes. She is also an active member of Vanguard. She has ties in both the Rogue Isles and the Paragon City police forces, and several other organizations. She has been the participant of several cross-dimension strikes into Praetoria and has assisted in multiple counter-insurgency actions against Praetorian military assets. This department recommends further observation of Jennifer Hu. Her past actions have proved her random and unpredictable at best. While it is true that she is a decorated hero and has saved many lives over the course of her short career, she has also shown that she is not afraid to set aside her values and work outside of the law to accomplish her goals.
