Origin
Jim Yamato was a hero long before he started wearing silver spandex. He was a helicopter pilot for LifeFlight, transporting critically injured people from accident scenes to hospitals. But the lack of qualified pilots meant long shifts, sometimes as much as 36 hours straight--and eventually fatigue took its toll. He crashed one day on the way to an accident scene, and while fortunately the victims lived, he himself was paralized from the waist down.
His career as a pilot was over, but he didn't give up. Instead of flying helos, he started designing them. He also started teaching martial arts to handicapped children, to feel like he was still contributing to the community.
His life changed again the day Hughes Aircraft bought his design for simplified helicopter controls. But instead of paying him cash, they offered to pay for an experimental procedure to restore his mobility. The procedure worked far better than he hoped, for he was not only mobile, but superhumanly fast!
With the coming of the first Rikti invasion, Jim realized that, with his power, he could help the world. He traveled to Paragon City, fashioned an identity-concealing costume, and called himself Mister Mercury.
So, with his mobility restored, Jim Yamato is now a LifeFlight pilot again. But when the need arises, Mister Mercury is there.
Powers
Mister Mercury has the power of superhuman speed. His sensory perceptions, reflexes, and movement speed are all orders of magnitude faster than normal. His top running speed has measured at 132kph (82mph), and he's getting faster. His superhuman reflexes and senses allow him to evade most hand-to-hand attacks and to dodge most projectiles. Additionally, his brain runs at such a high speed that most mentalists have a difficult time "locking on" to him; he has proven extremely resistant to mental influence.
Mister Mercury has been able to use his speed for various "tricks", such as landing dozens of blows in the space of a fraction of a second and spinning in place to create a vortex. His lightning-quick thought process also allows him to analyze opponents' weaknesses in a very short period of time, enabling him to strike vital or sensitive areas with incredible precision.
The source of Mister Mercury's speed is still a mystery. Biochemically, he is no different from a normal (albeit very fit) human being. Even his nervous tissue is the same as any other human's. This has led one scientist to surmise that perhaps Mister Mercury bends time unconsciously in his immediate vicinity. However, attempts to measure temporal distortions on (and even within) his person have shown no evidence of any time dilation or contraction.
(OOC: Mister Mercury is a Martial Arts/Super Reflexes scrapper, but with a number of additional "pool" powers to make him fit the theme of a super-speedster. His MA powers are: Thunder Kick, Cobra Strike, Crane Kick, and Dragon's Tail. His SR powers are: Focused Fighting, Focused Senses, Agile, Practiced Brawler, and Dodge. Affiliations
Mister Mercury is a member of the Legio Justitiae. He was at one time a member of S.E.R.A.P.H. Team One, but left that team because of a dispute with the leadership.
