History
Origin ((Levels 1-25))
The day before former Marine Captain Peter "The Stone Wall" Roark's first Mixed Martial Arts Heavyweight title fight, a couple of Family punks bet heavily against him. To cinch the bet, they kidnapped "Coach", his long-time mentor and trainer, and told Roark to take a dive--or else! Just to make sure, they slipped Roark's opponent a Rage/Superadine "Mickey" right before the fight, making him lose control and nearly beat Roark to death.
Desperate to survive and to save his coach's life, Roark focused his will and dug deeper than he ever had before, triggering for the first time his latent mutation and causing his entire body to become as hard and dense as solid stone. Roark quickly knocked out his raging opponent and then rushed to save his Coach--but he was too late.
After seeing bullets bounce off of Roark's rock-hard skin, with his dying breath Coach told Roark that he was like some kind of human monolith, and that he had a responsibility now to fight, not in the ring for money, but in Paragon City as a hero. Soon after Coach's funeral, Roark went to City Hall and registered himself as--MONOLITH MAN!
Secondary Mutation ((Levels 26-50))
Years later, the two punks that had killed Coach escaped from the Zig, where they had carefully planned their revenge. They captured Monolith Man and injected him with a massive overdose of the same Rage/Superadine coctail that they'd given his opponent years ago, and then dumped him in an alley. Their plan was to send him on a rampage that would ruin his reputation before he died from the drug overdose.
As the drugs coursed through Monolith Man's veins, his body reacted and he underwent a massive secondary mutation. He grew into a monstrous, super-dense form with a thick, rocky hide. The drugs still boiled through his blood, but the strength of his new form allowed him to resist. He focused his will and calmed the drug-induced fury raging in his brain. Then, using his newly increased powers, he once again captured the two punks, and back to the Zig they went.
Relationships
Over the years Raork has developed a deep, if somewhat strained, relationship with the roguish, radioactive Chiroptera-human hybrid, HAZBAT. He sees the good in her, and he admires her intellect and her survivor's spirit (as well as her... other attributes), but her past troubles him--and he doesn't approve of her erratic behavior and her willingness to use of her powers for her own gain. And the wings are a little weird, but he's gotten used to them.
Strength Level
When in his normal human form, Roark is exceptionally strong and fit for a man of his age, height and build, but not superhumanly so. Roark's original mutation allowed him to become super-dense and strong enough to lift (press) approximately 25 tons. His strength was linked to the force of his will, and under extreme circumstances he could nearly double his strength. After his secondary mutation, his armored form's base strength level allows him to lift (press) approximately 75 tons and his strength still increases with his determination, making him capable of exceeding class 100 strength.
Known Superhuman Powers
Roark's original mutation gave him the ability to will his body to become roughly as hard and dense as solid granite (about three times more dense than normal human flesh) with greatly increased strength and durability, but with no noticeable change in appearance. Roark's body would also physically respond to his will so that he grew stronger and healed more quickly and completely the more determined he became. While in his super-dense state, blades would merely scratch his flesh rather than cut, bullets would bruise but not penetrate, and any damage done healed many times faster and more competely than normal. Due to his strength and especially powerful leg muscles, he was able to move normally despite his increased weight, and even make huge leaps which he could use to generate powerful shock waves by striking the ground while landing.
After his secondary mutation Roark can grow into a large armored form, adding hundreds more pounds of super-dense flesh and bone and a rock-like hide to his original powers. In his is armored form, his skin has patches of special tissue that secrete an complex matrix of super-strong organic macromolecules highly mineralized with crystalline silica, alumina and other minerals. This forms a flexible layer of thick, interlocking, shell-like plates that resembles granite, but is vastly stronger and tougher. G.I.F.T. scientists have dubbed this unique exoskeleton his "lithodermis", and it can withstand great impacts such as armor-piercing fire, insulate him from electrical discharges and extremes of temperature, and resist bursts of high energy. Sufficiently extreme force, temperature, or energy can chip, crack, char, melt, or otherwise damage his outer shell, and when this happens the tissue below repairs or replaces it.

The great weight and high density of his armored form makes him extremely hard to move or to stop once in motion. It also puts trememdous weight behind his blows so that he often knocks his opponents off their feet or sends them flying. Due to his incredible strength, he is able to move with his full normal speed and agility despite his massive bulk. He has extremely powerful leg muscles which allow him to jump great distances. In conjunction with the weight of his super-dense body, this leg strength allows him to use both leaping and stomping attacks to generate powerful shockwaves. Due to weight and density, his armored form doesn't float in water and may collapse structures that are damaged or that are only strong enough to bear the weight of normal humans, limiting him to his human form in certain situations.
While in his armored form Roark is highly resistant to toxins, disease and infection. His efficient musculature produces less fatigue toxins and his healing factor deals with them more effectively, giving him superhuman stamina. His armored form's lungs are also more efficient and have much greater volume than those of an ordinary human, further increasing his stamina and enabling him to hold his breath for superhuman lengths of time. Also, part of his mutation is that in his armored form Roark's senses are all somewhat enhanced in both sensitivity and range, often allowing him to perceive things and function in conditions that would be difficult for a normal human. While he has no mental powers, his unusually strong will makes him highly resistant to psionic attack.
It is not understood where Roark draws the mass from when he changes into his armored form, or where he sheds the mass to when he returns to his normal human form. Presumably he is not exempt from the law of conservation of matter and energy. G.I.F.T and S.E.R.A.P.H. are conducting a joint study of this mass-change phenomena in certain heroes and its implications and potential uses.
Abilities
Roark is a former Marine Captain and Mixed Martial Arts heavyweight contender, as well as a veteran registered hero in Paragon City. Though a highly skilled and experienced fighter, his trademark has always been a deceptively loose, brawling style that has lent itself well to his mutant powers. His fighting skills and years of experience as a hero combine to make him a formidable opponent and a valuable asset as a team leader, point man, or, as he puts it, "just crackin' skulls". When not otherwise occupied, Roark works as a trainer in the Talos Arena, where he helps new heroes learn to develop, improve, and refine their individual and team fighting skills.
