Mountain-King

From Unofficial Handbook of the Virtue Universe

Jump to: navigation, search

The Mountain-King has gone through several iterations, the previous being an Ice/Storm Controller. Just shy of level 35, he was deleted and remade as an Earth/Storm Controller that fits the concept much better. Originally a lord of the Plane of Ice (and later Earth, after he was remade), that idea was dumped in favor of the "transcended alchemist" idea. I love the way the powersets play in-game, though the character has yet to really come into his own.

Personality

The Mountain-King is still getting acclimated to the modern world, and is often bewildered by it. Though he lived throughout Europe during the late Renaissance, he transcended his humanity when he mastered alchemy and obtained the legendary Philosopher's Stone. This event gave him mastery over the elements, but also left him somewhat alienated from the rest of humanity. Having lost touch with various emotions and human bonds, he often lacks empathy for others, even seeming as cold as the stones he summons. Regardless, he will fight for what is right and just, even as he struggles to learn of the modern world and reconnect with humanity.

Powers

The Mountain-King's powers are known to be the product of magic, particularly alchemical principles. The specifics of his connection to the Elements is unknown.

Control of Elemental Earth

Not surprisingly, the Mountain-King has considerable control over stone and earth. This is his primary means of capturing, confusing, and containing his foes. He has been seen to create rock formations, stalagmites, pits of quicksand, and even localized earthquakes.

Control of Elemental Air

The Mountain-King also has considerable control of localized meteorological effects. Noted abilities are hurricane-strength winds, arctic winds and sleet, and dense fog. He also has a limited healing ability, by a process of transmuting pure air as it contacts an allies' wounds.

Teleportation

The Mountain-King can travel through the earth, and re-emerge at his chosen destination. While he does have to emerge on stone or earthen ground, it does not have to be physically connected (eg, he could emerge on the moon if he wished, though such a great distance would require a mighty ritual to boost his power!).

Abilities

Alchemy

The Mountain-King is a master alchemist, and as such has an almost unmatched understanding of alchemy.

Weaknesses and Limitations

None known; he is not dependent on external sources for his powers. His abilities are limited by a lack of earth and air, but generally those two elements are in abundant supply.

Equipment

The Mountain-King generally needs no equipment, though upon occasion he will utilize his alchemical laboratory at the Seekers HQ for some special task.

Character History

The Mountain-King was born in England during the late Renaissance, and studied the arts of alchemy just as its popularity was starting to dwindle compared to its offspring, chemistry. While the details are unknown and his name lost to time, it is known that the Mountain-King became one of the last master alchemists and succeeded in obtaining the Philosopher's Stone. While many know of the tales of the Stone's power to turn lead into gold or grant eternal youth, it possesses many other capabilities. The process of becoming a master of alchemy is itself a purification of the alchemist, just as he purifies the materials in his search for the Stone.

The Mountain-King used the Philosopher's Stone to become the "Ambassador between Earth and Air". He transcended his mortality, and embraced the elements themselves, serving as a mediator between opposites (in a philosophical sense). This newly gained connection to the elements was both amazing and daunting, as there were countless secrets to be gleaned from the elements.

It is unknown what happened to cause it, but the Mountain-King fell into a deep slumber within the earth. Only his recent disturbance by the Circle of Thorns, attempting to bind the mighty master of elements to their will, awoke the King. Nearly enslaved to their will, the timely arrival of Jolly-Roger saved him and put an end to the Circle's plan. Thankful for the aid and knowing that he could not rest while such powerful foes roamed the earth, the Mountain-King joined the Seekers in their fight to protect the innocent and uphold justice.

While the majority of the Mountain-King's power is centered around the elements of Earth and Air, he does have lesser control of Fire and Water.
