Origins
Nareema al-Banafasji is a half-Djinni, half-human female, born in Istanbul, Turkey. Her human mother was a kind, but poor woman, and Nareema was forced more or less to fend for herself. Her father was a Djinni, a type of Genie from the elemental realm of Air. Growing up on the streets, getting what handouts she could from the vendors, she quickly developed an aptitude for trading and bartering. As a child, her unusual hair color made her supernatural heritage quite obvious, and all attempts to dye it or cover it with illusions failed. Although she inherited very few true Genie powers from her father, her halfblood heritage gave her incredible metabolism and healing powers. Scrapes, cuts, bruises, and even broken limbs heal almost instantly, and she has incredible staying power in long drawn out fights. When Nareema reached the age of 15, her mother presented her with a very amazing gift: a matched pair of ancient Damascus Katars, an old family relic. Nareema taught herself to fight using them, and after several years living about the land in Turkey, Egypt, and other countries around the Middle East, she found her way across the Atlantic and to Paragon City. After living in the United States for several years, her accent has all but disappeared. She lives in a small apartment in Talos Island, and often stays at the Tower of Shadows, the home base of her Supergroup, the Guardians of the Gate. She makes a modest living as an independent trader using the Wentworth Consignment houses.
Personality and Disposition
Nareema has embraced the ideas of being a Superhero. She is generally kind and helpful, and feels special affinity for other "half-bloods" like herself. However, some old habits will never die, and her youth has given her a bit of a selfish side, as she often had to fend for herself. However, this trait rarely surfaces, and usually only if confronted by someone who is edging her on. She speaks English in a clear, almost British style, but her Turkish accent is nearly entirely absent. She tends to avoid using slang, but has picked up a few colorful terms here and there. She is literate and a fair writer, and has even learned how to type on a computer. She is generally rather quiet unless spoken to, another trait she picked up in her youth.
Powers and Weaknesses
In addition to her enhanced metabolism and healing powers, Nareema inherited the Djinni ability of flight. Her Katars, while non-magical in nature, are made of Damascus, an ancient and extremely strong metal, easily comparable to modern steel weapons. In addition, she owns a second pair of modern Impervium Katars, black in color, for missions requiring stealth and concealment. Her service to the Vanguard has also granted her the use of their Talsorian Blades. Over time, she has also learned to manipulate light in the air around her and fade from view, causing her to become almost completely invisible to the naked eye. She can vary this power from being slightly translucent to nearly entirely invisible, only appearing as a slight shimmer or distortion in the air.
Despite being in excellent shape, Nareema is not as physically strong as most heroes. Her attacks are quick, but not powerful. She is also vulnerable to energy, psionic attacks, and to heavy front-load damage, which can knock her out before her healing abilities can react. She often tries to compensate for this by using her invisibility powers to fade out of view, but this has the unfortunate side effect of causing her to move more slowly.
Allies and Enemies
Nareema is currently a Harbinger of the Guardians of the Gate, and is responsible for the upkeep of their headquarters in the Tower of Shadows. She has a particular dislike of the Circle of Thorns and the Rikti, due to their habit of summoning beings via other dimensions. She is a proud supporter and member of The Vanguard, and has spent a substantial amount of time combating the Rikti in the Rikti War Zone.
Magic and Technology
Nareema herself practices almost no magic. However, her mixed blood causes her to be magically "aware" of auras, ley lines, mana, and every manner Magical energies around her. Her powers are magical in nature, but are as natural to her as walking or talking. She is quite capable of learning magic, but she has never bothered to try, as she feels it would have to come at the expense of her physical prowess.
On the other hand, Nareema is very fascinated by modern technology. Even among her magic-using peers, she loves to use various modern weapons and gadgets in addition to her more traditional means. She has amassed a collection of various pieces of modern gear, including jet packs, guns, throwing stars, and even special "web" grenades. She also owns a suit of Impervium armor, another grant from the Vanguard.
Costumes
Nareema is most often seen wearing a traditional Genie outfit, consisting of a vest and billowy pants, maroon in color. She wears a pair of gold shackles on her wrists, gold colored shoes, a gold metallic belt, several golden necklaces, and a veil covering her lower face.
The other costume she wears frequently is a traditional "Superhero" outfit, consisting of a mini-skirt, short sleeved shirt, leather thigh boots, gloves, a small eye mask, and a long flowing cape, all purple in color.
While attending to her duties at the Tower of Shadows, she wears a typical magi outfit. It consists of a long robe, purple and black in color and tied with a simple yellow sash, a purple undershirt and pants, and black leather boots and gloves.
Occasionally, she can be seen wearing ordinary street clothes, usually a simple pair of blue jeans and a dark blue jacket. Despite this attempt to blend in, her hair still makes her stand out in a crowd.
Her final outfit is a suit of Impervium armor, very similar to that worn by the wizards and soldiers of the Vanguard. Painted white and blue, she has decided against wearing the normal Vanguard helmet in favor of a pair of high-tech night vision goggles. She always uses the Talsorian Blades with this armor, as the gloves do not allow her to wield her normal katars.
