Origin
The Somnius Realm is an alternate universe that exist close to the Prime universe. The closeness of the realms grants Somnious a special property in that while the realms are separate, great events on either side can echo between the realms often revealing themselves in interpretive fashion to those who possess a creative spark. Unbeknownst to the two realms, many works of fiction have been influenced by this effect.
The Greater Tentacle War
The Somnius Earth is currently a broken field of planetoid mass, a grim reminder to the last great tentacle war. Prior to those dreadful events, aliens had made contact with Humanity sparking a rapid advancement of human tech and culture as the alien technology allowed for melding of arcane and scientific technology. Humanity would form a relatively peaceful interstellar League of Species including several races save for two, Demons and Tentacles. The Demons of Succunda were always a constant threat to the budding league as they would seek to tempt powerful figures among the other races, twisting and corrupting them to their ideals in an effort to put their race in a position of dominance over the other races of the galaxy. On the other hand, the Ravager Tentacles were a much more direct threat.
Most of the races had some prior experience with Tentacles (classified as Wigglus-Minoris) as beast of varying levels of intelligence that spread through the galaxy through spores. Depending on where the spores landed would affect the resulting creatures aggressiveness with some races having more violent and destructive encounters than others and were largely considered a nuisance to most. Trouble began when the Ravager Tentacles came out of the black of space. Classified as (Wigglus-Majoris) the Ravager Tentacles were stronger, viciously aggressive, totally insatiable and much more intelligent than those tentacles that the races were experienced with dealing with previously. The Ravager Tentacles didn't arrive as spores but in wriggling masses, burrowing into the soil of their landing site as they spread along the surface.
Earth was hit hardest by their onslaught, receiving double the number of masses that other planets, probably due to Earth being the hub of the League of Species. The League floundered as multiple homeworlds were under assault and Earth had to deal with its infestation alone. The Ravager Tentacles were an insatiable foe, using every woman and man captured to fuel the infestation. Many lives were lost until the League attempted to use a Cell-Bomb, a massively destructive device designed to utterly annihilate cells that it is keyed to. What wasn't expected was that the Ravager Tentacles had burrowed deep throughout the earth and, when the device went off, the resulting explosion shattered the planet.
Several of the other races were able to mount a conventional defense against the Ravager Tentacles, including the Katrl, a race of humanoids with some cat-like features often referred to colloquially as Catgirls or Catboys by humans.
