Her In-Game Bio
"With more police officers and superheroes dying in the line of duty defending the people of Paragon City, it's time for new blood to step up to the plate. I never considered myself a hero, but I was raised to help those who can't help themselves. That's why I became a social worker. But standing up to bad guys isn't like serving soup in a kitchen shelter. These guys play for keeps and don't care who they hurt in order to win. I'm taking this new job very seriously. I took hand-to-hand courses at the local Longbow base. I talked to the heroes and the police about being a crime fighter, when not to cross the line between justice and vengeance. I also made this suit and shield to protect my body, and a hero name to protect my identity. Omega means the last, the end. No more people will be hurt if I have anything to say about it."
The Death Of Statesman
Barbara came home from a friend's birthday party and turned on her TV just in time to hear the news on the Paragon City news channel: Statesman is dead.
She was stunned. How can s hero like him die? Wasn't he supposed to be invincible? Wasn't he supposed to be an incarnate?
Nevertheless, she was shocked. She never met the man, but had a great deal of admiration and respect for his heroic deeds. She heard tales about his deeds from a superhero named Flash Bug. She considered Flash Bug a good friend for helping her with keeping the homeless in Skyway City safe from recruitment by the Lost and being the "star draw" for charity fundraising without asking for anything in return. As a result, she had a close connection with some members of the superhero community of Paragon City.
As mentioned, she was shocked, but was also angered and enraged enough to make a life changing decision that would give birth to a new heroine in Paragon City.
Brave Heart
When Flash Bug was asked to meet her at the community center where she worked, he assumed it would be for another fundraising drive. He was shocked to learn, because of the death of Statesman and the many police officers and superheroes before him at the hands of evil, she wanted to become a superhero herself. She asked him what was the best way to do this.
He was going to try to talk her out of it. He was going to tell her that what she was going to undetake was dangerous. Despite his reputation as a hero who made his career one fun game, even he knew the risks. Like every hero registered by the FBSA, he always did his homework before going out on a mission and took great care during a takedown of the bad guys to ensure he would come home largely unscathed. He didn't want her to enter this dangerous job he was in that never seemed to end for a break. Despite being 15 years her junior, he had a bit of a crush on her that he never admitted to her. He didn't want to see her get hurt. He didn't want to lose her.
But he also knew she was a tall, strong woman. Barbara showed him pictures of her amateur boxing league days and movies of her boxing bouts taped by her proud father, an avid boxing fan himself. He knew no Hellion or Skull was gonna take her purse from this lady. He also saw, deep in those dark eyes, the fiery heart of a Cherokee warrior of old.
He decided he was going to do everything he could to help her become a superheroine.
Omega Rising
With Flash Bug's help, Barbara first contacted many members of the superhero community, the Paragon City police department, and Longbow. The overwhelming response to her plans to become a registered superheroine was positive, but some felt she may be overreacting to the death of Statesman as the motivation of her decision. One Longbow sergeant, Carl Neilson, originally felt she was not ready. He figured the best way to change her mind was to give her a rude awakening in a training exercise. He was not going to make it easy. He sent in six of his best officers against her in a hand-to-hand combat scenerio. He didn't do this because he was mean. He wanted to show her what she was going to be up against.
As expected, she went down in under a minute against the overwhelming odds, but not before breaking the nose of one of his officers and knocking the front teeth out of another. That was enough to change his mind. With the help of City Hall officials, he got the paperwork done for her to enlist in basic defense training Longbow officers start with. By the time he was done with her, a few months later, she was up at Level 3 proficiency. That was more than enough to take anyone amongst the Hellion, Skull, and Lost.
But Barbara was still flesh and blood, without powers. Carl contacted a few friends in the Paragon City police department to "loan out" some high-impact leather body armor the Emergancy Task Force use and sent the bundle to Sergei at Icon in Steel Canyon for modification.
Flash Bug suggested she get fire-arm training so she could carry a Longbow-issue rifle but Barbara did not like guns, usually associating them with the criminal element. She instead decided a shield, much like her Cherokee ancestors carried in battle, would be what she would use both offensely and defensely. A steel-plated round shield from a supply store was purchased and the grip modified to allow her to block and swing without changing her hold.
The final thing to do was her hero-name. Barbara was stuck on finding the name. Flash Bug suggested Cherokee Maiden, but Barbara did not want a name that, like the silver age comic book heroes, named ethnic heroes based on their race, like DC's "Black Vulcan" or "Apache Chief". The name had to fit the reason why she decided to become a superheroine. When Flash Bug reminded her that the reason why she wanted to do this was that no more police or heroes would die, she suddenly smiled and uttered a single word.
"Omega"
