PRAETORIAN A'KO
From Unofficial Handbook of the Virtue Universe

Background
Praetorian A'ko (Eiko Magami) grew up in the shadow of Emperor Marcus Cole and the Magisterium in Nova Praetoria, the capitol of the nation state of Praetoria. Rather than being truly born into that world, she was carefully developed by her Loyalist parents and a team of Praetorian scientists under the watchful eye of the Magisterium. Little is actually known about A'ko's origins. She has been told several stories and paperwork recovered on Project: A'ko, secured from a Praetorian scientist and double-agent for the Resistance, turned out to be a deliberate falsehood. A'ko's parents have also been less than completely forthcoming about her origin and development. The truth may have been lost completely at the Fall of Nova Praetoria, when Emperor Marcus Cole detonated a nuclear weapon above the city, destroying the Magisterium and all records of Project: A'ko.
There have been at least three origin stories for A'ko.
Origin #1
The first origin story was based on A'ko's memories of growing up in Nova Praetoria, subjected to a number of tests and procedures and tortures to find the limits of her superhuman strength and invulnerability. She was designed to become a Weapon of Mass Destruction, perhaps as part of a super-soldier project for Emperor Cole's plans for Primal Earth or as a hedge against Hamidon. Like most Praetorians, A'ko was not aware of Emperor Cole's unjust tyranny and the dark reality that lay beneath his empire. She was a Loyalist child and even participated in training camps and leadership camps for Loyalist children on the Praetor track. However, A'ko's grandparents, the human parents who had raised her allegedly extraterrestrial father, Strange Visitor were part of the growing Resistance. They tried to get their grand-daughter to see the light and use her power to defy her parents and Emperor Cole. Confused, A'ko confessed to her father what his parents had asked and Strange Visitor killed them as a show of Loyalty to the Emperor.
Realizing that they were correct, A'ko joined the Resistance in secret. But she was soon captured and exposed. Before she was able to be delivered back to her parents for re-education with the Loyalist Mother Mayhem's organization, several Resistance members helped A'ko find the portal to Primal Earth at the cost of several of their lives.
A'ko, upon arriving in Primal Earth was soon discovered by Anbaric Amber, leader of the Women of Justice who took her under her wing.
Origin #2
The second origin story was based on the false information provided by a Resistance double-agent. It was similar to the first origin story except that Praetorian A'ko had been psychically tortured into developing two distinct personalities. The first would be the friendly and polite surface version who would act unconsciously as an infiltrator, getting into Resistance organizations and then, with a flip of a psychic switch, she'd destroy them and their facilities. In this way, A'ko would be a targeted Weapon of Mass Destruction. She was the first of three projects, A'ko, B'ko, and C'ko representing, Strength, Engineering, and Psychic power respectively. These three girls would become the vanguard and template for an army suitable to control the metahuman population of Praetoria, subdue Hamidon, and serve as defense against the incursion of Primal Earth. But the girls were too difficult to control and became far too powerful, leading some to predict they could thwart Emperor Cole for control of Praetoria. The Projects were terminated and the girls were each re-educated with the intention of suppressing their memories and training.
Origin #3
This last origin is the most recent and is a combination of both the previous origins and adds testimony provided by A'ko's mother, Amaterasu that A'ko was proposed to be a Super Soldier and Weapon of Mass Destruction but Amaterasu had always intended Project: A'ko as a front for her true ambitions. Amaterasu, or the entity that calls itself Amaterasu apparently needs a metahuman body to survive, perhaps in a way similar to the Kheldians. The stronger the metahuman, the stronger Amaterasu's abilities. When she fell in love with Strange Visitor, the sole survivor of a race of powerful aliens from another galaxy, she realized that his unique physiology combined with her attributes would create a supremely powerful and nigh-invulnerable shell that she could occupy for eternity. The dark personality within A'ko was revealed to be part of Amaterasu's living spirit and the source of A'ko's vast power. Every time A'ko uses her abilities, she is calling upon that dark spirit. Amaterasu believes that despite A'ko's continued and valiant resistance to her mother's influence, A'ko will eventually succumb and give herself wholly to her mother. To her credit, has vowed eternal resistance and has sought help from a number of friends, including the powerful psychics Code Blue and Crux Enigma as well consulting powerful mages.
More Background
(( i'm going to be moving or relocating a lot of this information because I want it to be better organized. The "More Background" will be replaced with something a more simplistic ))
It is unknown which of these stories is more or less accurate. What is clear is that A'ko's personality is unstable and while generally polite and courteous, she can be pushed into displaying a terrible temper and can be goaded into showing considerable disregard for the traditional notions of heroism and justice. For instance, she has been known to remove limbs from her opponents rather than merely disarming them. Nevertheless, whatever her true nature, Praetorian A'ko presents herself as a somewhat series, juvenile hero who has managed to gain respect in the wider super hero community. She has most recently become a member of The Reciprocators, one of the premier groups of heroes in Paragon City and the world. There, she has begun to receive considerable training and valuable experience.
While it is widely known that Praetorian A'ko and Eiko Magami are one and the same, A'ko chooses to live secretly in a third identity. All that is known about this identity is that they live outside of the city in the suburbs, and attend a public high-school. It is not known what means of disguise A'ko uses to protect her identity. The disguise appears to have worked as her arch-rivals in The Malta Group have as yet been unable to locate her or have decided not to reveal this information. It was her dealings with The Malta Group that brought her to the attention of the Reciprocators as a possible recruit.
Almost from the moment Praetorian A'ko arrived, The Malta Group tested themselves against her power but it wasn't until they abducted Eiko Magami's boyfriend and his family, along with Anbaric Amber's parents that A'ko began to take Malta more seriously. A series of unusual events, explained below in another section, left Praetorian A'ko without her powers, including her invulnerability for the first time in her life. It was during this vulnerable moment that The Malta Group decided to make their move in a bid to recruit or control the hero. But even without her abilities or perhaps in spite of their lack, Praetorian A'ko managed to plan and stumble through the rescue of her friends and family, coordinating with a couple members of the Challengers and other powerful heroes and vigilantes. Key to this success was her adoption of the semi-sentient battle armor, that she named S'TEVE. This battle armor assisted A'ko by mimicking a fraction of her strength and other abilities. It had been designed for use as the battle armor for the CEO of St. James Industries, Eva St. James, otherwise known as the hero Technically Eva, co-founder of the Women of Justice. A'ko managed to effectively use the battle armor to track down Jack Firenze, better known as Malta Director 17. It is suspected that A'ko tortured Firenze until her revealed the location of a secret base in Warwick, Rhode Island where her friends and family were being held.
The team A'ko had assembled was instrumental in exposing the Warwick facility and destroying it. The scale of the exposure soon became public and evidence was found that implicated a mole in St. James Industries. The mole was revealed to be Evita Page, the acting CEO for St. James Industries after the loss of Technically Eva and the rest of the Women of Justice at the Fall of Nova Praetoria. A'ko convinced Page to turn State's evidence and testify against The Malta Group. It was during this last altercation that A'ko learned that Malta Group's three-year-long campaign against A'ko had ended. The truth of this statement has yet to be revealed. But A'ko felt it was still necessary to develop and maintain a new identity to protect her friends.
If Malta Group was surprised at Praetorian A'kos sudden resourcefulness, they were not the only ones. Several of her friends and contacts on the social-media website, Formspring, made note of A'ko sudden cunning and guile. The longer A'ko was without her powers, the more intelligent and capable she became. When S'TEVE was damaged in an altercation with Codename: Devilfish, A'ko was able to effectively repair him without having any background or training in engineering. It was later revealed that Praetorian A'ko had a latent "technopath" ability but it was suppressed by her other powers, especially the psychic conditioning that resulted in her dual personalities. However, the loss of A'ko's abilities turned out to be temporary and within a couple of months after their loss, she had returned to full power, losing the enhanced mental faculties she had developed. While initially distressed by their loss, she has since come to terms with.

Powers
Superhuman Strength
Praetorian A’ko’s true strength remains unclassified but it has exceeded any tests thus far conducted. In mid-September 2012, she was spotted effortlessly carrying the Mayweather, a container ship with over 103,000 gross tons of cargo on board. The origins of her strength are unknown and her physical body appears unusually thin so it is unlikely that her body generates her power directly. When it comes to physical strength, A’ko is generally believed to be one of the strongest beings in Paragon City, if not the world. However, despite her colossal strength, A’ko lacks significant fighting skills and has yet to demonstrate a capacity to use her strength to her advantage.
When under the influence of Mother Mayhem and her Praetorian Loyalist parents’ brainwashing, it took eight of the more powerful members of the Challengers and Reciprocators, and at least one powerful villain to temporarily incapacitate A’ko. A’ko herself claims that she was not defeated but had the brainwashing “beaten out of her” after which she took a dive to convince her Loyalist parents that she was not as powerful as she had been designed to be.
In another psychic attack by Mother Mayhem, one that coincided with painful events in Ako’s personal life, she was able to single-handedly disarm and defeat the entire Women of Justice and put 15 other heroes in the hospital before she was stopped by a powerful combination of magic and technology that blocked Mayhem’s signal and allowed A’ko to regain control of herself.
Invulnerability
A’ko possesses extreme resistance to conventional damage and has exceptional healing abilities. On at least 5 recorded cases, A’ko has been clinically dead, once for more than a week before she revived and returned to full health within days. For less dramatic injuries, A’ko has demonstrated an ability to recover within minutes. Conventional weaponry, gunfire, artillery, and energy weapons have little effect on her. She cannot be scanned or x-rayed as the energy used reflects off the surface of her skin. A’ko can survive under extreme pressures, and appears to be invulnerable to heat or cold. She has been exposed to the vacuum of space, crushed under the weight of an entire skyscraper in Overbrook, and has fallen into lava without any deleterious effect.
She has demonstrated immunity to all poisons and chemical attacks and is highly resistant to the “sapper” technology employed by The Malta Group.
Nevertheless, A’ko is not completely invulnerable. She requires oxygen, water, and food in order to survive. When she is denied these things for a substantial amount of time, she will fall into a type of stasis or hibernation. It is unknown how long she can remain in this state.
Reflexes, Agility, & Stamina
A’ko has superior reflexes but lacks the training and skill to take full advantage of them. She has deflected bullets with her arm bracers and can run at super speeds but rarely does so. She prefers to leap distances in a single bound.
A’ko lacks training and skill in common fighting techniques and even with her powers has been bested in single-combat by the presumably unpowered hero “The Bird Watcher.” It should be noted that despite a lack of known powers, “The Bird Watcher” appears to be able to block the flow of energy or chi within a being, temporarily disabling powers and limbs. On the whole, A’ko’s fighting ability is no greater than an unpowered human with street fighting experience.
A’ko’s stamina has continued to increase since her arrival in Paragon City when she was 13 years old. While her invulnerability seems boundless, her superhuman strength has limits and can be exhausted. During the Galaxy City disaster, she used her full-strength non-stop for 96 hours before she weakened to average unpowered human status. After a few days of rest, her powers returned to their full-strength.
Flight and Gravity Control
A’ko has just begun to unlock her ability to defy gravity. At the moment, she can merely hover a few inches above the ground and has little control. A’ko must have some inherent gravity control. Even though she appears physically capable of balancing 103,000 gross tons over her head, the pressure on the ground, over such a small area, would be akin to pushing a thumbtack into a wall. A’ko must, in some way not currently understood, either locally control gravity, shift the mass of the weight, or increase the density of matter around her feet. It may well be a combination of a number of options.
But A’ko appears to lack a conscious control over gravity. She has almost zero “knock-back” protection. This means that even though her body is invulnerable and super-humanly strong, if she is levitated or otherwise suspended in mid-air, she is incapable of using those abilities. Heavy artillery can blow her clear of a battle as can large concussive explosions. Her area of affect (AOE) is exceptionally small and is generally limited to her physical reach. However, she is capable of throwing even heavy items a considerable distance. She’s boasted about throwing things like automobiles into low Earth orbit. She can also punch or stomp the ground causing tremors that have reached has high as 6 on the Richter scale.
Other Powers and Abilities
A’ko possesses above average “heat vision” which is a concentrated beam of heat and light. This vision has a 200 yard effective range but it not a skill that she has cultivated and tends to rely on it only when her other abilities have been rendered ineffective (such as when she is levitated).
Gear and Tech
A’ko wears two armbands on her forearms, sometimes referred to a bracers or bracelets or gauntlets. These armbands are composed of an unknown metal, apparently stronger than impervium. A’ko herself alleges that the armbands allow her a modicum of control over her superhuman strength. They cannot be removed, even by A’ko herself. She has used them to block all manner of weapons and energies.
When these armbands are struck together violently enough, sparks are created that A’ko can command to do significant ranged damage via plasma burn and electrical shock.
She also possesses a version of Anbaric Amber’s utility belt which has several helpful pieces of tech and other items.
1) Smartphone 2) Handcuffs 3) Tracing/Tracking Devices 4) Grenades (smoke, flash/bang, web, & conventional) 5) Throwing knife 6) Tazer 7) Blackwand 8) Gabriel’s Hammer 9) Sands of Mu 10) Headband/Tirara (psychic defense) 11) Ouroboros Portal 12) Identification & cash card 13) Toiletries 14) Beef Jerky 15) canteen
Notable Weaknesses
Even with her exceptional superhuman strength and near invulnerability, Praetorian A’ko is not omnipotent. As noted earlier, her lack of conscious gravity control leaves her vulnerable to knock-back. When explicitly targeted, she can be effectively removed from the battle. She is most effective when she can physically grab or touch her target. Once outside her physical range, she can be survived quite easily.
If A’ko can be suspended, either telekinetically or through the use of sounds waves or intense magnetism, she becomes ineffective.
A’ko also lacks significant training in hand-to-hand combat and has no particular fighting skill preferring brute force and invulnerability to solve most combat situations.
She has been, until recently very vulnerable to powerful psychics. After the second attack by Mother Mayhem, A’ko began to wear a silver headband, apparently made of the same material as her armbands. This has proven effective at blocking psychic attack, even against the Rikti.
Lastly, Eiko is vulnerable to magic leaving some to speculate that her abilities are partly magical in nature. She has proven particularly vulnerable to the magics used by the Carnival of Shadows and she tends to avoid direct confrontation with them.
