History

Origin

When Vicky Neri found the Blessed Helm of Athena, she was an undergraduate student in Paragon State University doing her internship in an excavation site on Megara, Greece. She discovered the artifact alone; read aloud the inscriptions etched along the helm’s visor and was overcome with a strong desire to place it over her head. When she did so, she became possessed by the helm’s power and her spirit and mind united with the helm. She learned then the origin and nature of the helm: It was a divine artifact created by Athena as a boon to the goddess’s favored heroes, from Perseus and Jason to Odysseus and Diomedes. With the power of the artifact, Vicky becomes an avatar of Athena herself, receiving all the knowledge, experience and prowess of the helm’s previous wearers and gaining the invincibility of a champion of the war goddess. Vicky becomes Pallas whenever she wears the helm. She is transformed into an 8ft. tall version of herself clad in armor of varying design. Her memories and appearance are the same as Vicky Neri but the avatar’s personality is much more reserved and sober compared to Vicky’s approachable and friendly demeanor. The helm grants Pallas near invulnerability against any damage as well as superhuman strength, endurance and reflexes. Pallas is also an expert sword fighter thanks to the knowledge gained from the helm. She wields either her Vanguard issue energy blades or a pair of impervium sabers given to her by Positron for services rendered to the Freedom Phalanx.

Career

Pallas began her highly decorated career participating in several Task Forces organized by members of the Freedom Phalanx, for which she was eventually given the rank of Task Force Commander as well as becoming a Freedom Phalanx Reserve member. Pallas was also given the Stalwart Medallion for saving the Terra Volta reactor after all but two members of her Task Force died protecting it. She was awarded the Atlas Medallion when she helped uncover The Council's program focused on bonding their elite soldiers with Nictus. Pallas became a full member of the Midnight Squad after saving Croatoa from the supernatural forces that had been assailing the it and developing a strong bond with the positive spirits that protect the town.

Pallas during her service in the Vanguard
After graduating PU with a Bachelor's in archaeology, Pallas works with the Midnighters as an expert in ancient mystic rituals and has become an authority on the link between ancient Greek mythology and the modern-day Origins of Power. Since then, Pallas has dedicated her heroic career in fighting otherworldly threats of magical or extradimentional origin. She works closely with the Vanguard in combating the re-emergent Rikti forces and has participated in several Task Forces and raids in both the Shadow Shard and the Rikti war zone in Paragon City. Currently, she has lent her services to Portal Corp. in order to investigate newly discovered alternate Earths, especially Upsilon Beta 9-6 (Praetorian Earth).

When not wearing her helm, Vicky Neri is an archeologist specializing in pre-classical Greek city-states of Ionia at Paragon University Croatoa where she is part of the History and Humanities Department and a Professor of Classics at PU Founder´s Falls. She has a B.A. in Archaeology from Paragon University and an M.A. in Classics from the University of Cambridge. In 2007 she was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship.

Professor Neri is also a member of the Midnighters, where she is an expert in ancient Greek and Middle-Eastern artifacts and rituals. Vicky has worked extensively with the secretive magical organization and has become a representative and liaison between them and other private and government organizations, such as as Vanguard, the PPD, Portal Corp., and the enigmatic Menders of Ouroboros.

Powers and Abilities

The Blessed Helm of Athena

Eons ago, when the Olympic gods emerged to overthrow the titans for dominion over humanity, some managed to escape their Olympian enemies and remained influential for a time. Among these titans was Pallas, the titaness of Martial Prowess and Battle. When the goddess Athena finally overthrew Pallas and took her titles (becoming Pallas Athena), the titaness surrendered her helm to Athena as a token of respect towards a worthy foe and successor.

Athena granted her helm as a boon to her favored champions. Heroes of old wore the helm during their greatest struggles against the forces of evil and chaos. It granted them the divine strength and wisdom of Athena, making them invincible against their adversaries. After the Greek dark ages passed, the helm was kept in Athena's temple in Megara until it passed into myth and then forgotten from memory.

The helm has been classified by MAGI and the Midnight Squad as a class 5 Magical Artifact, equal in power to the sword Excalibur and the Girdle of Hera in power. The helm itself resembles an ancient Greek hoplite’s helm of the Corinthian type, however, it is made entirely of gold instead of bronze and it has numerous prayers and incantations to Athena etched along the rim of the visor. Despite the fact that it’s notched and scratched, the helm appears to be indestructible. Vicky was allowed to keep using the helm by MAGI since it only seems to respond to her; other people are either ignored by its magical forces or are violently repelled when trying to recite its sacred engravings.

It is the origin of all of Palla's supernatural powers. When worn, it turns her from a 5'10" young woman into an 8'6" tall ageless amazon wearing armor of varying design. The avatar's appearance varies so much that even the helm itself changes, from a crested hoplite helmet to a modern-looking version of itself to even a simple gold headband.

An aura that emanates from the helm seems to be the direct source of her invulnerability, similar to how certain psionic and psychic auras affect some other heroes.

Although the helm itself does not seem to be sentient or inhabited by a spirit, it does change Palla's personality when worn. This is due to it transferring the memories and knowledge of all the previous users to her as if they were her own. WIP

Affiliations

Pallas was approached during her time in Vanguard by former PPD captain David Earl Mayer, aka Captain Daystar, in order to form a special inter-organizational Task Group. Captain Daystar had long been a liaison between for the PPD and worked on better cooperation between it and other groups. The group's name was Victory's Chosen and it included members from several different groups:

Pallas and Captain Daystar were the co-founders. Daystar brought in access to the resources of the PPD while Pallas shared her connections within the Midnighters and Vanguard.

Swordwolf and Silver Eyes were serving in Vanguard when they were recruited into Victory's Chosen. They had worked with Pallas there several times and so were a natural fit into the new group. Swordwolf was rather infamous for his brash nature and independent streak but Pallas had known the hero since his origins with the ill-fated teenage vigilante group The King's Men.

Auroa Crowe and Bronze Hawk were two heroes who had begun working with the Midnighters when Ravenette, a retired hero and former Midnighter, asked Pallas and Daystar to take the two young heroes under their wing.

Sunlancer and Doctor Theodorus Xanatos came in last into the group. Sunlancer was a former PPD officer who looked up to Daystar and had asked to join his new group after becoming a Peacebringer. Doctor Xanatos was a respected chemist and a member of MAGI. He worked mostly as a scientific adviser for the group. He also helped design much of the equipment used by the group.

Rogues Gallery

Mythic Woman
Mythic Woman: Palla's Praetorian counterpart. Mythic Woman is more of a rival to Pallas rather than an adversary; since her arrival to Primal Earth she has garnered a reputation as a tenacious vigilante that has Paragon's best interests in mind. Pallas and other heroes believe that Mythic Woman still has secret but significant ties to the Praetors. She leads Primeforce, a hero group composed of members all believed to have ties to Praetoria.

Swordwolf
Swordwolf: Once Palla's trusted partner, Swordwolf is a notorious rogue and mercenary who's martial skills, astonishing Rikti-induced cellular regeneration and vicious temperament make him a constant and dangerous foe.

Silver Eyes
Silver eyes: Silver Eyes abandoned the remaining members of Victory's Chosen and followed Swordwolf to the Rogue Isles. She uses her psionic powers and deadly gunplay to carve out a living as an assassin and mercenary.

Ultralith
Ultralith: A true force of nature. Ultralith was created by the deranged Doctor Xanatos, one of his many experiments trying to perfectly combine science with magic. Ultralith is believed to be a type of Pumicite creature similar to those found in the Hollows. He has a type of miniature fusion reactor within his chest and is given sentience by what is thought to be a djinn or some form of nature spirit bound to his body. He is immensely powerful, nigh indestructible and as unpredictable as his mad creator.
