Adam O'Siodhachain (O SHEE-han) had always been fascinated by space. Nothing held his interest like the sky, and a series of telescopes as he was growing up ensured a strong drive to be involved in a job involving space. Briefly courted by NASA after graduating college, he instead opted to become a project engineer for one of the many "civilian space" companies that sprung up following the successful flight of SpaceShipOne, the winner of the 2004 Ansari X Prize. He felt that the exploration of space would never succeed if left in the hands of bureaucrats, and that the civilian sector had the drive and passion to go above and beyond what the government was willing to do.
During test flights of a ship capable of carrying passengers, he volunteered to accompany an experienced pilot to perform some measurements from inside the ship. During the flight, the pilot opted to travel over the north pole, allowing Adam to excitedly photograph an extraordinarily strong aurora borealis.
It was during this time that Adam was first contacted by the Kheldian known only as Phoenix. Although hearing a voice in his mind caused him to have a slight panic attack. he managed to get himself under control before endangering the mission. He didn't speak of it to anyone for fear of damaging his credibility as a scientist.
For several test flights, Adam was contacted by Phoenix, who seemed especially interested in human life. Adam became used to the presence of Phoenix in his mind, and after a while began to look forward to it.
During the final test flight before the project would be unveiled to the public, Adam felt strangely alone, as Phoenix had not contacted him for the entire flight. Then, suddenly he felt the presence of Phoenix in his mind, stronger than ever. The creature quickly impressed upon him its urgent need for a host, as at that exact moment the badly-wounded Kheldian was plummeting to Earth.
The urgency of the call surprised Adam into agreeing. Within moments, the ship was enveloped by a sphere of brilliant light, and Adam felt Phoenix enter his body. The flight was quickly terminated by the pilot, and the ship was safely landed back on Earth. Adam explained to the shaken pilot and his superiors what had happened. Although they claimed to understand, he was quickly bundled up and quietly shipped off to Paragon City.
Taking the name Phoenix Serenity as a nod to both his Kheldian symbiote and the ship of his favorite show, he now fights for peace not only in Paragon City, but in other dimensions as well.]
