PPD Case Files: History
The super-criminal Liam Art MacComber was born to unknown parents in approximately 1979 and, according to our earliest records of the man, adopted by James and Helena Colwell of Salamanca, RI, at an estimated age of five years old. MacComber had a history of juvenile delinquency during his high-school years. Despite this, he was an average student, and was a member of his high-school varsity wrestling team. MacComber attempted to join the army after graduating high-school, but was rejected due to repeated insubordination and numerous altercations with other recruits.
MacComber first appeared in Paragon under the alias Pity Fist in 1999, working as a hired enforcer for a small-time gang. Over the next several years, law enforcers encountered Pity Fist working on the payroll of various groups, most notably the Outcasts and the Family. These arrangements seem to be nothing more than short-term contracts, as Pity Fist prefers to free-lance and has not tied himself to any established organizations. Pity Fist has also been known to engage in small scale robberies entirely on his own initiative. During this time period, Pity Fist was often reported collaborating with fellow super-criminal Blinding Afterglow.
In the spring of 2007, PPD officers were approached Hayden Dupre, also known as the Hero [Name Withheld]. Dupre claimed to be Pity Fist’s former lover, saying that the relationship had become violent and he was concerned for his safety. Dupre revealed Pity Fist’s identity as Liam MacComber, and filed a restraining order against him. The information provided by Dupre led law enforcers on a manhunt for MacComber which lasted several months. MacComber responded by launching several high-stakes heists on banks and casinos before fleeing the city. Several officers were killed during these confrontations. The PPD sent several teams after the man, followed by the recruitment of Heroes to the effort. On October 31st of 2007, MacComber was defeated and presumed killed by the non-sentient robotic Hero Hawkfire Mk. IV.
MacComber’s body was taken to the Ziggursky Correction Facility morgue. It was soon discovered that he was not dead, however, when he began regenerating from his injuries. He was confined and sedated, awaiting trial. MacComber was found guilty of numerous counts of robbery, assault and battery, assault of law officers, and resisting arrest. In the case of officers killed by MacComber, he was initially charged with second degree murder, but this was later lowered to manslaughter. Nonetheless, the charges against MacComber were enough to earn him a life sentence.
After serving 19 months in prison, MacComber escaped during an Arachnos breakout in the summer of 2009. He is currently known to be operating out of the Rogue Isles.
Longbow Threat Assessment: Powers and Motivations
- Overview
- Pity Fist is a high-powered, Brute-class Villain of either magical or mutant origins. He is unaligned with any larger criminal organization.
- Powers and Abilities
- Empathic Absorption: Pity Fist’s primary ability is his unusual form of empathy. Pity Fist is a powerful empath, on par with many high powered Heroes. Unlike these individuals, however, Pity Fist’s powers seem to be highly internally-focused. The presence of emotions, particularly strong emotions, increases Pity Fist’s strength, resistance, and regenerative capabilities to superhuman levels. Pity Fist is capable of retaining some of this energy for long periods of time.
- Pity Fist has demonstrated the ability to boost and lower emotions and sensations in other people as well. His mastery of this seems to be rather crude—he is only able to manipulate basic emotions.
- Spirit Mastery: During his time in the Rogue Ises, Pity Fist has developed the ability to channel a form of what appears to be arcane energy. Based on reports from his recent encounter with Numina, we believe this is related to the ectoplasmic materials which make up the bodies of ghosts and specters. The energy is red in color, and Pity Fist often shapes it into solid, crystalline shapes.
- Spirit Form: On several occasions since Pity Fist’s arrival in the Rogue Isles, our agents have reported him shape-shifting during combat into the form of a large grizzly bear with reddish fur. This is believed to be a magical transformation.
- Countermeasures
- As Pity Fist prefers to fight in close combat, and rarely carries weapons, ranged attacks tend to be effective against him. Pity Fist is an experienced fighter, however, and will attempt to minimize this disadvantage. Non-sentient robots seem to be the most effective threat to him, as he cannot draw emotional energy from them.
- Due to Pity Fist’s period of incarceration, we have had a chance to test his empathic abilities. By keeping Pity Fist heavily restrained in a shielded cell and exposing him to individuals with various types of mental protection, we were able to determine how he responded to various obstacles to his empathy.
- Individuals with standard telepathy blocks were successfully able to prevent Pity Fist from determining which emotions they were feeling. He was, however, able to determine the strength of the emotions.
- Individuals with advanced mental training were able to suppress their emotions normally. This made it possible to misdirect Pity Fist and dull stronger emotions which he would otherwise pick up on.
- Pity Fist is able to detect emotions in individuals with unusual neurobiology and altered mental states, but has difficulty determining the nature of these emotions.
- Robotics give Pity Fist the most difficulty. However, he does seem to be able to detect emotional energy from robots who have been determined to have true sentience. Nonsentient machines do not affect him.
- Motivations
- Pity Fist remains unaligned with any criminal organization, including Arachnos. He generally hires out his services as a fighter to other individuals, only rarely masterminding his activities. Pity Fist’s primary goal in his activities seems to be the acquisition of wealth. He has not shown any interest in political power or broader schemes.
- Threat Assessment Level: Moderate
- While Pity Fist is a powerful fighter, and does use lethal force which has resulted in several deaths, he does not fight to kill. His salable services do not include hits and assassinations, and he seems to prefer to leave helpless opponents alive, unlike many Villains. This, in addition to the fact that he does not appear to have broader goals other than self empowerment, puts his overall threat level only at Moderate.
Arachnos Report: Current Status
The metahuman known as Pity Fist arrived on Mercy Island with a shipment of Destined One candidates from the Ziggursky penitentiary facility in Paragon City. Do not be misled. This man is not a Destined One. The man simply climbed on to the flyer during the extraction, and our agents were unable to remove him before they were forced to evacuate. Nonetheless, his determination shows promise, and we have attempted to recruit him into our ranks several times. He has rebuffed these offers. Fortunately for him, I am patient, and will not order his execution until he has had chance to reconsider. Pity Fist has recently worked with Ghost Widow in exchange for—as I understand it—help with troubling aspects of his powers. This relationship, rather predictably, ended disastrously.
Pity Fist is currently known to reside in Cap Au Diable.
