Background
Childhood Dreams
Rentis Krogen was born on May 15, 1981 to parents Alex and Maria. The Krogens were considered by many to be Seattle royalty, having what seemed like limitless wealth. Together they owned and operated "Krogen Antiquities." A global acquirer and retailer of rare and extremely expensive antiques. The clientele consisted almost entirely of the rich and powerful. People looking to show off their wealth with items many would consider priceless.
The company brought the Krogens great wealth but they rarely showed it. The Krogens were considered extremely modest. They almost never attended any of the lavish and exquisite parties they were always invited to unless it was a fundraiser. Maria Krogen worked extensively with Seattle's homeless, often spending hours each day at a shelter donating her time to help with whatever was needed. Alex was more of a diplomatic type, always making sure the less fortunate were given equal representation in all aspects of their lives. He even contemplated running for senator a few times but ultimately decided he was too busy. The only major purchase the Krogens bought for themselves was their manor. Krogen Manor was located on one of the numerous islands that dotted the Washington coast. The manor itself was a guilty pleasure of sorts for the Krogens. It was extremely large and featured in several architectural magazines for it's beauty. Inside the manor the Krogens had stored many of the priceless items they just could not part with. Items that they felt deserved to be preserved as opposed to shown off by some billionaire.
When Maria became pregnant she decided to slow down her life quite a bit. She still contributed to her charity work but not nearly as frequently. She also left the family business exculsively to Alex. They had tried many times to get pregnant and had been unsuccessful until then. After Rentis was born Maria devoted all of her time to his needs. Alex also cut back, passing up a lot of offers from snobbish folks looking to show off their wealth. Rentis was brought up on the same morals as his parents. The Krogens had wanted their son to learn to appreciate all people regardless of their differences. He attended public school instead of some fancy private school for the rich and he had made friends from all walks of life. Of course it was always hard for him to have friends over considering the exquisite home he lived in. Rentis was a bright child. All throughout his childhood he would ask his parents where each of the countless artifacts that dotted their home were from. He would always pretend he was a famous explorer like Christopher Columbus, traveling the world looking for new places and people. He would make up his own stories about each of the artifacts telling of finding it in some jungle temple or long lost tomb. When he was a little older, about 9, he would often spend time with his father at one of the numerous Krogen Antiquities showrooms, always excited to see the new items they had acquired. He had decided early on that when he grew up he would help his dad travel the world to acquire the rare antiques they'd later sell.
Tragedy struck when Rentis was 16. His parents were killed in an accident while on vacation in Cairo. A plane crash he was told. He handled his parents loss as well as could be expected. Unfortunately for him not even a day later the lawyers and greedy people out to make a quick buck showed up. Rentis was the only heir to the Krogen's massive wealth. Not even he had known just how much money he now had. There were people who claimed to be his long lost aunts and uncles offering to take care of him, and his money. People his parents had trusted. The Krogens had no reletives and he was well aware of it so their attempts were futile. Rentis let his parent's lawyers deal with the rest of the people that felt they were owed something. It saddened him to know that even after all the work his parents did to change the world for the better it ultimately ended with nothing, seeing all of their 'friends' all of a sudden become enemies. Rentis decided that he no longer wanted to sell antiques and priceless artifacts to people who would abuse their worth. He let the lawyers deal with the business until he was 18, at which time he took full possession of it. He immediately closed down Krogen Antiquities and began cataloging it's massive collection of items. He received a lot of negative feedback for the closure. His parents had been one of the most popular antiques dealers to the rich. With them gone their clients would have to go to lesser dealers who's inventories just never quite reached the same calibur. Rentis didn't care. After he had finished inspecting each artifact he donated every single one to various museums and art institutes around the globe. It was at that moment he immediately stepped out of his parents shadow and became his own person. He had also decided he wasn't going to search the world for various dealers anymore. He was going to search the world for the artifacts themselves, as an archaeologist.
College Life and Revelations
After Rentis had finished high school he packed a few things and left for California, leaving the care of the manor to the few maids and butlers that he knew he could trust. He enrolled himself in the archaeology program at UC Berkley in hopes of just fitting in like a normal guy. At first the media and more people looking for quick cash wouldn't leave him alone but it didn't take them long to realize he wasn't going to give them any attention. He hated the fact that he would forever be known as "that really rich guy." He just wanted to fit in and be normal, despite his wealth. He put most of it behind him and focused on his studies. His favorite courses were taught by Professor Arthur Mundas, a somewhat famous explorer. Arthur Mundas was revered in the field of archaeology for his discoveries in Central and South America, discovering long forgotten Mayan and Aztec cities. Rentis got along really well with Mundas, who considered him to be one of the most prospective students he had seen in all his years of teaching. A mentor role for certain but almost a fatherly one Rentis had thought. Rentis got along okay with most of the other students, most of whom were from rich upbringings themselves, although they all knew that Rentis had been the single most wealthy student there and there was always a look of jealousy about them. All except for one. Glenn Harris, a fellow aspiring archaeology student. Rentis learned from him that Glenn wasn't from wealth in the least. He had grown up on the streets. His motivation came in the form of his art. He drew of fantasy places and far off worlds that he could escape to. It made perfect sense Rentis thought to himself. He never did try to imagine what it was like for Glenn though. He felt he would only come off as snobbish as he clearly had no idea what it was like to be poor.
Rentis and Glenn quickly became friends, exchanging tales of their fictional dream discoveries all the time. Rentis wasn't sure if Glenn had known just how wealthy he was and he never mentioned it, he was glad to just have a friend he could talk to about everyday things. Aside from their talks of discoveries they talked about college life often. They would laugh and make jokes about all the women that would try to get Rentis's attention obviously only wanting his money and then trying for Glenn who had a toned body and good looks. Neither one of them dated at all but it never really crossed their minds. They talked about sports although Rentis always seemed to get lost on the subject. Rentis had found it rather odd a jock type like Glenn was so interested in archaeology but he was never one to judge. The two grew closer as the time passed, eventually bunking together their sophomore year.
Rentis had realized early on that he had been attracted to Glenn for more than his great company, letting his eyes gaze upon Glenn's body for a little longer than they should. He never said anything though for fear of ruining their friendship. He did try several times to find out if Glenn had felt the same way, asking subtle questions about his taste in women. When they'd work out together he'd ask what Glenn thought of a certain guy's body. He tried to make it sound more like a comparison as opposed to an admiration. Rentis was never successful though, each time getting rather flat answers like "she's ok," or "he seems to take good care of himself." Late in their sophomore year Rentis decided to tell Glenn not what he had been feeling, but at least that he was gay. By then he figured that if Glenn wasn't interested in him sexually they could at least be friends and he wanted to be honest. Glenn took it well, taking a very laid back "that's cool dude" approach to it. Rentis left it at that but inside he always felt Glenn wasn't being entirely honest.
Rentis offered several times to take Glenn to Seattle with him for summer vacations or holidays when they weren't taking archaeological internships. Glenn was also a volunteer police officer so that would get in the way at times too. Glenn declined the invites each time and Rentis figured he was just uncomfortable being alone with him. He never blamed him though. He figured it must have been uncomfortable for Glenn not knowing if he'd just wanted to be friends or if he wanted more. Of course Glenn would have been right. Almost every night when Rentis would go to bed he had dreamed of just walking over to Glenn's bed and kissing him, not caring what Glenn had thought of him. One night he woke up and looked over, just to stare at Glenn's beautiful body. Glenn however had been awake and looking in his direction. Rentis had felt so embarrassed. He noticed Glenn had been sweating, a hot night he figured. He asked Glenn if he was okay and simply got a nod before Glenn turned around. "I wish I knew what's going on in that head of yours Glenn," Rentis thought as he laid back down and went to sleep. That Christmas he offered as usual to take Glenn to Seattle with him. He asked haphazardly figuring he'd just say no. Glenn didn't say no however, he had said yes. Rentis tried to hide his excitement as best he could but it was pretty obvious. The week before Christmas break was hard for him, trying to hide his excitement.
Rentis had decided that once they got to Seattle the first thing they would do was take the weekend to go skiing. He figured Glenn probably had never skiied and it might be a fun first activity. Skiing had been one of Rentis's favorite activities to do with his parents when he was younger. He always enjoyed the fresh mountain air and the freedom to just be away from civilization for a while. Glenn told Rentis that he had never been skiing and got a sort of deathly embarrassed look on his face. Rentis just smiled and told him he'd do great, and he was. He would try and hide his chuckles when Glenn would fall down but each time he got back up. All he could do was smile as he watched Glenn.
After the weekend Rentis decided he really wanted to show Glenn the manor. They took the ferry to the island and drove the rest of the way. It was a mostly secluded area, a nice escape from humanity. There was a fence around the entire complex and a huge gate guarding the entrance. As they pulled up Rentis glanced over and noticed Glenn looking around in awe, like a kid in a candy store. There was a statue garden that encompassed most of the grounds in from of the manor, with various plant life and fountains scattered between the numerous statues and sculptures. None of the statues were actual antiques, all works done by a close friend of his parents. In the back of the manor Rentis had built a shooting range where he could practice his shot when he was at home. It was a personal hobby of his mostly, but he had gotten quite good. The manor itself was a rectangular shape built with grey brick masonry. There were only about fifteen rooms inside but from the outside Rentis had always thought it looked larger than it really was. The most exquisite masonry was the two pillars that sat on either side of the main door. They were almost ancient greek in look but having additional modern touches to them. Small figures were carved into the pillars as if to tell a story of some ancient kingdom. Rentis had never figured out what it was they were trying to tell but it was always a nice touch. The main hall was probably the most extravigent room, having statues and paintings, tapestries and designer rugs. Rentis had never been a big fan of the hall but he respected his parents taste and decided to leave it unchanged. The main hall had access to both the main and secondary floor with two staircases located in the center, one on each side of a fireplace located in the center. It had a very symmetrical look to it. Above the fireplace Rentis had placed a painting of his parents, to honor them. He was very casual about each piece of art they would pass. He never said much about anything just letting Glenn make his comments and providing a brief history if he'd asked. Inside Rentis had turned the larger gallery room into an indoor shooting range where he'd practice if the weather outside wouldn't permit him to. He had collected several types of weaponry but he always found his favorite to be the Desert Eagle magnum. Just enough power he had decided. The various other rooms were bedrooms or studys. Each having different artifacts his parents couldn't bear to part with. In the basement Rentis had built a gym and indoor pool. Rentis had liked to swim laps after working out or after spending time practicing his shooting. They had decided to spend the rest of the day watching movies in the entertainment room. Rentis had always been a fan of technology, and this room was quite a bit more modern than the rest of the manor. Nothing was over the top but it was respectable. They watched several different movies. Rentis, however, couldn't quite focus on the movies, always thinking about Glenn who had been sitting just a few feet away. He glanced over only a few times, trying not to appear obvious. He had finally realized that he was not only attracted to Glenn but he was falling in love with him, and there was absolutely nothing he could do about it. They watched several movies before it became dark outside. Three, Rentis had gathered when he payed attention. They had decided to head to bed, both exhausted from the weekend.
Rentis's room was just across the hall from the guest room that Glenn was going to stay in. He figured it would be less creepy in that big manor. They were the only two there. Rentis made sure all of his employees had extensive vacations for the holidays to visit with their families. He figured a little dust wasn't anywhere near as important as family. Of course Rentis knew this was only part of the reason he had them so close together. He wanted Glenn close to him, just incase. A simple "Night," was all they said to each other before heading into their respective rooms and shutting the doors behind them. Rentis changed out of his clothes and into his more comfortable pajama bottoms and t-shirt. He wondered what Glenn was wearing. He'd always worn a t-shirt and his all too snug boxer briefs back at school. "Modest but still sexy," he thought to himself. He had wondered if now that he was alone he might be wearing even less, or nothing at all. The thought of him in the bed with nothing but his body and the sheets made Rentis crazy. All he could do was close his eyes and try to sleep. Everytime he closed them all he could see was Glenn. He knew there was no way he would be able to sleep so he just laid there. It was only a few minutes before he decided he couldn't take it anymore. He had to know how Glenn felt regardless of the outcome.
He opened the door and walked across the hall to the door that guarded Glenn's room. He froze a moment, barely able to muster up the courage to knock on the door. He raised his hand to knock on the door and managed to knock only after telling himself Glenn was probably already asleep. He knocked and to his surprise he heard movement from behind the door. He froze again when he realized Glenn wasn't asleep. He quickly regained himself as the door opened and he saw Glenn standing there. Glenn had been wearing just his jeans and no shirt. Rentis tried not to glance at Glenn's exposed chest but his glances were obvious. He was tired of trying to hide his attraction. Their eyes met and all Rentis could do was stare into those beautiful green eyes. All the while his own eyes were screaming, "take me Glenn, I'm yours." Rentis was scared to death at that very moment. Scared of both rejection and of acceptance. His breath became sped up and heavy. He closed his eyes for a moment as if wishing to wake up from some horrible dream. He opened his eyes as he felt Glenn's hands on his face, pulling it toward his own. Their lips met and Rentis felt a shiver travel across his entire body. He embraced the kiss with his own and slowly put his arms around Glenn. He felt Glenn's fingers slide through his hair as their bodies came as close as was comfortably possible. It had only lasted a moment, a moment far too short Rentis thought to himself. They stood there, holding each other. Rentis looked at Glenn once more. He went to speak, to say "I love you Glenn, I've always loved you," but before a single word came out he was interrupted by Glenn's finger as if to say his words weren't necessary. He felt Glenn's finger slide from his lips down his torso for a moment before joining the other hand he placed around Rentis's neck. Glenn gently but firmly pulled Rentis along with him back into his room. When they had reached the bed Glenn leaned backward as if to fall. Rentis slowly loosened up his grip around Glenn's waist and guided his body as it fell backward onto the bed. When Glenn's body was completely on the bed Rentis pulled his arms away, allowing Glenn to lie there.
Rentis grabbed his shirt and pulled it up over his head. He felt Glenn's hands on his now exposed torso and then his lips. Glenn began kissing his chest. Rentis tilted his head back and closed his eyes, letting out several deep breaths. He placed his hands on the back of Glenn's head and let them move it. Guiding Glenn's lips to the various areas of his chest. His nipples at first, then down toward his stomach. Another shiver went through his body as he slowly pushed Glenn back onto the bed, this time with himself on top. He kissed Glenn again, this time knowing he was the one in control. He felt Glenn's hands wrap around his body and rest themselves on his back. Glenn's fingers slowly began touching, almost massaging, his back. Rentis wanted to let out a sigh of pleasure but he wouldn't stop kissing Glenn. He felt Glenn's fingers travel from his shoulders all the way down to his lower spine before stopping. Glenn paused a moment. Rentis lifted his pelvis backwards as if telling Glenn to go further. A moment later he felt Glenn's warm hands squeeze the soft skin of his ass. He stopped kissing Glenn a moment to let out a small grunt. He felt Glenn roll him over, not as gently as their embraces before but more violent, more aggressive. Glenn stood up and Rentis looked at him for a moment. He felt Glenn's hands on his waist, grasping the pajama pants he'd been wearing. Glenn slowly but firmly pulled them off, exposing Rentis's body fully. Rentis's heart began racing as he became nervous. Glenn stared at Rentis's now nude body for a moment before stumbling hurriedly to remove his own clothing. Rentis watched, his eyes fixed on Glenn. He smiled when he finally saw how turned on Glenn had become. He looked up at Glenn's eyes a moment only to notice him start to blush and then cover himself up. Rentis smiled at Glenn and then grabbed his hands, pulling them away from Glenn's body and towards his own.
When Rentis woke up the next morning all he could do was look over and stare at the man next to him, the man he loved, sleeping so soundly. He leaned over and kissed Glenn's forehead before he got out of bed and headed to take a shower.
The Disc
The following summer an earthquake unveiled a temple in Southern Africa, the likes of which nobody had ever seen before. Professor Mundas was given the opportunity to lead the exploration. He decided to take Rentis, Glenn, and a few of their other classmates, knowing he had some of the best explorers he'd ever seen. Naturally Rentis and Glenn had to have a little friendly competition between one another to see who could find the most prized artifacts. They discovered the reason the temple was unlike anything they'd ever seen before was because it was literally not human. Inside they found fragments and scraps of technology far beyond even the current human technology of the time. Unfortunately it looked as though the entire place had been burned or something as almost everything inside was unrecognizable or even useful.
Rentis separated himself from the group and headed off down the numerous halls and passageways. He worked better alone. He entered a room that seemed to have sustained more damage than the rest of the temple. There were fragments of stone and warped metal all over the place. On the floor lay a small octagonal shaped disc made out of some kind of glass, about the size of a salad plate. When he inspected the disc he noticed several strange hieroglyph like patterns. They weren't any ancient human hieroglyphs he'd ever seen so trying to translate was pointless. As he picked up the disc to go show Glenn he felt a strange, chilling sensation. The hieroglyphs began emanating a faint blueish glow reflecting their patterns off of his eyes. A sudden rush came over him and a flash of light followed. He saw what looked like the temple he was standing in only completely intact. It was very brief and very distorted but he saw several other flashes, each containing an image. First the temple, then a strange hazy figure he'd assumed was one of the aliens, and finally a strange device glowing with similar hieroglyphs. A second later he saw one last flash. A scene of the Earth from afar, a great fissure appearing from somewhere near Antarctica quickly taking over the planet, splitting it into several pieces, and then nothing, just black. He collapsed to his knees, exhausted from the experience. When he regained his composure he stood up and noticed the disc had shattered into a fine sand-like substance in his hands. He took a moment, trying to realize what he had been witness to before deciding to rejoin the others. He acted casually as if nothing had happened. The disc was gone, there was no proof of what he saw, or thought he saw even.
Parting Ways
Only a few weeks after they got back to the campus from their dig Rentis more or less forgot about the experience he had had at the dig. It was always in the back of his mind but he wasn't sure it even meant anything so he didn't bother. It would soon be their senior and final year of college. There were a few more digs throughout the year but nothing out of the ordinary. As graduation grew closer and closer the two students began talking about what they would do once they graduated. Rentis had always just assumed they would go explore the world together, never caring about where they ended up. Glenn however was thinking differently. He'd visited the Paragon Police recruiters several times during the spring. Apparently they were recruiting from all across the country to try and strengthen Paragon City's defenses, be it in Longbow or the Paragon PD. Glenn wanted to serve his country and help Paragon and he knew Rentis wouldn't be pleased. About a month before graduation Glenn had decided to tell Rentis of his plans. He had told Rentis about his growing feelings for the police force and his loss of feelings for archaeology. Rentis had always known Glenn wasn't as in it as he himself was, but he just figured he was a fanatic of sorts. Glenn had also told him that he had been spending almost all of his time doing volunteer police work and toning his body for the tasks he knew were ahead of him. Rentis had known Glenn was doing some police work but he never quite got a grasp on how much. He then began to realize that Glenn had slowly been pushing him away. They didn't go out together nearly as often as before, and it was a chore just to get Glenn to show him some affection outside their room. He had thought that it was just because they were both becoming so busy in their respective fields of study, but that wasn't it. Rentis had finally understood. It was all because he was getting ready to leave. He sat quietly for a moment, not sure whether to feel anger or sorrow. He wanted to scream out, "I love you Glenn, why would you do this to me?" but he said nothing. He wanted to cry so much, but he didn't want Glenn to see him so he simply nodded and turned back toward his desk. Glenn grabbed his coat and left. Rentis tried his hardest to withhold the tears that were welling up behind his eyes but he couldn't contain himself any longer. He had had a sinking feeling for some time that Glenn wasn't happy but he had never thought it would have come to this. He had only cried for a moment. "I'll be ok, it... probably wouldn't have worked anyway," he told himself as he went back to his research. He tried to forget about it and bury himself in his book.
They didn't talk much for those last few weeks. Rentis knew Glenn was just trying to give him his space and help him get over it but that never seemed to actually make it any easier. He knew Glenn was probably doing better emotionally than he was. Glenn was a pretty closed off person who could mask or even dismiss his emotions.
On graduation day Rentis felt sick. He knew it was the last time he would see Glenn, for who knows how long, and he wasn't sure he could go through with it. He managed to pull himself out of bed. Glenn had already gone to the ceremony. Rentis got dressed and headed out himself. All throughout the graduation ceremony he thought of two things. The first was how happy he should have been feeling about finally being free to explore the world. To get out there and discover the lost worlds. And the second was how he actually felt, knowing he was about to lose the one thing that meant the world to him. He calmly accepted his diploma but said nothing. When the ceremonies were over the two met back up at the dorms one last time. Rentis just stood there, looking at the floor. Glenn stood across from him a few feet away trying to get his attention without really doing anything. They took a few awkward moments of silence before Rentis finally mustered up enough to say goodbye. They ended with a simple hug and a handshake. Glenn took his bags and left. He had told Rentis he was going to Paragon City and had to catch the first available flight. That was the last time Rentis and Glenn would speak for four years.
Old Friends, New Enemies
For the next few years Rentis would discover several major ruins and temples of past civilizations. He discovered the lone survivor of an ancient birdman race in a temple in South America, Averus, the birdman had told him. He also discovered an underwater base run by the Aquanova Corporation contaminating the ocean floor with toxic waste and destroying marine habitats. The last major discovery he was responsible for was that of a woman. A woman he found living alone in the Gobi Desert. It turned out she had been a necromancer, playing with dark magics, and he had to stop her. Rentis never did like the thought of the walking dead. Every few months or so he'd wonder how Glenn's life was fairing in Paragon City. He wondered if Glenn had found someone new. He told himself he was slightly dillusional thinking that Glenn might be waiting for him. Glenn was quite a catch, he told himself. Any man would be crazy not to want him. He'd simply shake his head and tell himself he needed to get over it and move on. He'd also wondered if he'd ever meet someone himself that he could maybe fall in love with. He mostly just put that thought on the backburner though, he figured he'd never have any time with all his exploring.
Two years ago while on a journey through the Indian rain forests he came across another temple like the one he'd helped discover in Africa. This one was also as destroyed as the previous temple but it was much bigger. Buried in the ground mostly. In it however he found another strange disc, a disc also containing a vision. This one however was more clear and less invasive. It told of a tome containing the history of the entire species. He could also figure the alien race was called "Mira" from the visions and once again the disc crumpled to sand once the vision was over. He started to believe that what he had seen in his first vision could be more than just some strange alien vision, but a glimpse of the future. He began investigating everything he could find about the Mira and the tome. After several weeks of dead ends he finally got a clue that the tome was located somewhere in the Rogue Isles, off the U.S. coast. He'd only heard a few things about the Isles but he knew he had to find the tome before someone with sinister intentions did.
He decided he'd infiltrate the Isles as a villain himself. He hired some street thugs to help him out with the lay of the land and headed to Mercy Island where the new recruits were located. He slowly worked his way through the Isles until finally finding a clue as to the tome's location. It was said to be in the hands of a fortunata. Apparently she was awaiting the arrival of Scirocco, a patron of Lord Recluse, ruler of the Rogue Isles. Rentis could only wonder what Lord Recluse would do with such knowledge and decided he would have to act fast.
When he got to the base he had discovered that he was not the only one searching for the tome. Inside he found several bodies of soldiers and broken machinery that clearly indicated a fight had taken place. He readied his weapons as he slowly ventured through the halls of the base, hoping he wouldn't run into whomever had been destroying the place. He wandered the halls passing bodies and more destruction before finally ending up at a room. The door had been blown off it's hinges. He heard fighting as he slowly approached the room. He took his aim. Rentis slowly crept into the room with his weapons ready only to discover a single Arachnos Spider agent, standing over the body of another, a female agent. He yelled for the agent to turn around slowly and drop any weapons he had been carrying. Rentis hated violence and he hated killing people even worse so he was hoping the soldier would cooperate. The soldier dropped his rifle and slowly turned to face him. Rentis, with his guns aimed at the soldier, shouted for him to hand over the tome. The soldier in a voice, quite calm despite his current predicament, told him simply, "Hello." Immediately Rentis recognized the voice. He lowered his weapons as the soldier removed his helmet revealing his identity as Glenn Harris. Rentis staggered for a moment, startled. He wanted to drop his weapons, run over and leap into Glenn's arms. He stopped himself and began wondering what exactly Glenn was doing in the Rogue Isles. He wasn't even sure it was the same Glenn he had grown so fond of. Maybe he had changed.
The two talked for a few minutes realizing time was against them with Scirocco on his way. Rentis had learned that Glenn was working for the Longbow undercover as an Arachnos agent trying to bring down Lord Recluse from within. Glenn told him that he had learned of the tome during an eavesdrop and had a strange feeling it was something important and linked to the alien ruins. He'd decided to try and acquire the tome and turn it over to Longbow before Lord Recluse could get his hands on it. That made Rentis rather unhappy knowing Glenn thought of his job before even considering giving the tome to him. They made their way toward the entrance. When they neared Rentis could see two shadowy figures approach in the distance. As they got closer he made the figures out to be a sharkman of some sort and a pale woman with long white hair. He had no idea who they were but they didn't look too happy. He looked over to Glenn who's face had become rather pale. Rentis could tell that Glenn knew who they were and it must have been bad.
The woman, Ghost Widow he would later learn, simply asked for the tome in exchange for their lives but the sharkman , Mako, had a look on his face. A look like he was ready to kill them both. Rentis looked over to Glenn unsure what they should do. He wasn't sure what kind of power the two of them possessed. Glenn nodded to Rentis rather uneasily as if to say it was bad but they had to fight.
Rentis quickly took out his weapons and fired a single shot at Ghost Widow. It did nothing. She smiled at him as dark shadowy tendrils began forming around her body. Mako charged at Glenn who had barely had enough time to even ready his weapon before being tackled to the floor. Rentis fired several rounds at the sharkman trying to get him off Glenn but they didn't seem to do much damage. He turned back to Ghost Widow just as she fired a bolt of dark energy at him. It had felt like he had all of a sudden run a marathon. All the energy in his body had been drained and he collapsed to the floor. She approached and told Mako to cease his attack. He grunted several times but obeyed. Rentis looked over at Glenn who had been badly beaten. Glenn managed to pull himself up and sat against a wall. He was holding his stomach, clearly injured. Rentis tried to crawl over toward him but he could barely move. Ghost Widow knelt down and stared at him. Her eyes had been so empty, so haunting. She them smiled gently at him before picking up the tome that had been dropped in the struggle and turning toward the exit. She nodded to the sharkman. Rentis became bound in what he could only describe as dark tentacles of some sort. She walked away as Mako approached Glenn. He lifted him off the ground and tossed him against the wall he had been hunched up against. He began clawing Glenn's flesh. Rentis tried to free himself from his bounds but he was unable to overcome the power of Ghost Widow. He let out several loud cries as the sharkman continued to claw at Glenn's body. Unable to take it anymore Glenn collapsed. Mako looked at Rentis before opening his hand and stabbing Glenn through the abdomen. Glenn let out a muffled cry as blood began pouring from his mouth. Mako removed his hand from Glenn's stomach and then simply turned around and left. A moment later the tentacles had simply vanished and Rentis mustered up enough energy to drag himself to Glenn's body. Glenn opened his eyes and muttered a single "I'm sorry," before spitting up more blood and finally losing consciousness. Rentis cradled Glenn's body and began begging for him to wake up. He continued to beg for a moment as tears fell from his eyes onto the now lifeless body. He never actually cried however and only a moment later he sat there, staring at the wall next to him, breathing deeply.
Into the Spider's Web
Rentis carried Glenn's body out of the base and made arrangements for the body to be transported back to Longbow. Glenn had no family so he figured it was the best thing to do. He explained the general situation to an officer in Paragon City when he arrived. They tried to get him to explain everything he knew about the Mira but something wasn't right. He had heard about the Longbow before and knew that they, to a lesser extent, were just as bad as Arachnos. He became rather irate when they pressed the issue, ignoring the fact that Glenn had just been killed. He left without saying a word and headed to a local hotel. He had taken Glenn's spider uniform when they transported the body back and now it sat on the table in his hotel room. He sat on the couch and stared at the helmet, as if Glenn was still inside. He sat there for a few hours before finally succumbing to his exhaustion and falling asleep. That night he had nightmares. Nightmares of the events that had recently occurred and nightmares of the Mira events he had encountered in the past.
He spent several more days in the room merely thinking until he finally decided he would not let Glenn's death be for nothing. He took the spider uniform and headed back for the Isles, not letting Longbow or anybody else know. He cut himself off from the world. When he arrived in the Isles he immediately sought out an Arachnos recruiter. He was going to join Arachnos and finish the work that Glenn had started. He had also decided that the best way to get close enough to the tome to steal it back would be as an insider. He had hoped that Scirocco would be unable to decipher it long enough for him to get it back and destroy whatever it was the Mira had built on Earth.
To this day Rentis Krogen is still undercover as an Arachnos agent. Each day he loses more and more of his old self to the will of Arachnos. He has not had any encounters with Lord Recluse or any of his patrons as of yet. Using his knowledge and skills he has climbed up the web inching closer and closer to the top. He is unaware that Lord Recluse had discovered him some time ago and merely laughed it off, knowing he has no real power. Scirocco and his Mu are also no closer to figuring out the tome's text. It has been a year or so since they acquired it and they've more or less given up. As of today it sits in a special library in Grandville.
