The Knights of Albion

Ryan Moriarty

Affiliations

Personality

Moriarty is an easygoing man who fancies himself as a bit of a comedian. While he often claims to have been coerced into becoming a hero, though, he takes his duties seriously, especially when it comes to his teammates.

Motivation

Having his eyes opened to the supernatural world fundamentally altered Moriarty's outlook on life, bringing both a fascination with hidden things and mysteries, and a grudging acceptance that he should probably do something to look out for his fellow man. Being a member of the Knights of Albion has focused him further on doing the right thing.

Powers

Moriarty is a natural psychic, but his powers did not manifest on their own. To access them, he requires the use of a focus, such as his deck of aged Tarot cards. The cards have been charged with significance by the generations of psychics who used them before him, and by concentrating on them with his psychometry, he unlocks the related aspects of his own power.

Psychometry

Ryan's only naturally-active power is the ability to read the psychic trace left on objects by previous owners or past events. The greater the significance of the item to its owner or the greater the emotional impact of the event, the stronger this trace becomes.

Psychic Strike

Ryan is able to throw projections of his Tarot cards as psychically-charged projectiles, representing the significance of The Tower. These attacks are most effective against living beings and the undead, but can also cause some damage to unliving matter and machinery.

Psychic Transfer

Through the power of Death, Ryan is able to draw spiritual energy away from his enemies and into himself.

Illusions

With the aid of The Moon, Ryan can confound and confuse the perceptions of others.

Pyrokinesis

By focusing through the Suit of Wands, Ryan is able to conjure psychic manifestations of fire.

Abilities

Vulnerabilities

As Moriarty's psychic abilities are not fully under his control, he lacks the mental shielding that many psychics cultivate. In fact, his high psychic sensitivity makes him more vulnerable to psychic energy than a regular human would be. Creatures of the spirit world are drawn to him as a potential host and his mind is an open book to primal spirits of emotion. Ryan avoids any direct contact with the spirit world; when his team needs to cross over to there, Ryan accompanies them by projecting his mind remotely.

Equipment

Tarot Cards

An aged 78-card deck of Tarot cards, of uncertain provenance. The cards act as a focus for Moriarty's psychic powers. The twenty-two Greater Arcana in particular serve to amplify particular aspects of Moriarty's power when needed. Moriarty sometimes implies that they have personalities of their own, though this is more a side effect of using them to commune with the spirit world.

Lodestone Brooch

This jewellery device is also magical in nature and allows communication between members of The Knights of Albion, as well as entrance to the "Ley Tunnels" which connect the physical world with their extra-dimensional base in The Lady's Castle.

Character Origin

Ryan Moriarty never really believed in the supernatural. He was aware of the existence of superhumans, even in his own country, and of the various strange things they fought, but he remained dismissive of claims that magic was a real force in the world, and that strange spirits and the Fair Folk were more than just old stories spread by the superstitious. He only took a job as a reporter on psychic phenomena for the potential in travelling around and claiming outrageous expenses.

Moriarty's first run-in with a real supernatural event changed everything. As an untrained psychic, Moriarty found himself attracting the full attention of a swarm of ghosts variously intent on communicating with him, possessing him or just tearing him apart in a blind frenzy. With the aid of a German sorceror who happened to be in the neighbourhood, Moriarty gained enough control of his abilities to repel the ghosts and escape, but the damage had been done to his ingrained skepticism.

Following the incident, Moriarty began to train his abilities in earnest while delving into the new world he had discovered. His strange and fantastical tales served him well in his writing, and supported him as he took on his new role as something of a psychic detective. Some time later, he heard the Lady's call, and the rest was history.
