Sa'd al-Bari (or Bari as her friends call her) is a djinn (or "genie" as people call them today, though she is quick to point out that the second term doesn't mean quite what people normally think it means.) After a statistically improbably long string of kind and grateful masters, her lamp was found by possibly the most evil man in history. As he found her a few weeks before the Sheherazade Accord was passed between a council of Djinn and the descendants of Solomon, she was not permitted to leave after three wishes. And to make matters worse, he was smart enough to not make stupid wishes that would allow Bari to carefully craft his demise.

Instead, he used her powers to slowly conquer the world, turning all into his servants. Knowing how many other genies and wizards in the world would try to thwart his schemes, he had Bari slowly drain the powers of all other spirits, magical creatures, demons, djinn and (eventually) gods that she encountered.

Ironically, the only two lesser deities who saw Bari's master as a threat and prepared for him were the first to be captured and drained of their skill. Thor and Athena joined the master's armies as generals under the command and control of prime general Bari.

When her master began expanding his conquest into other planes of reality and conquering more gods, he started changing the laws of reality themselves with Bari's steadily growing power. This finally caught the attention of the few remaining gods who hadn't realized how troubling the whole scenario was, and history's most allegedly powerful ragtag team of underdogs was formed. In a brilliantly planned coup, the master's death was arranged while Bari was seizing the magical powers of a sentient galaxy, and she could not return in time to fulfill his wishes of protection. She did arive in time for one final wish: protect the empire.

When the master died, he was erased from history as thoroughly as possible, and time restarted with all traces of his empire erradicated. Pity was had on Bari, for after all she was a pawn in the wars, and she was allowed to merely be destroyed and scattered across the universe. Over the millenia as time restarted she began to put herself back together, and finally reformed at a convergence of much chaos and magical energy: the breakout of a certain prison in Paragon City.

As it is, she's less powerful now than she was when she first became a djinn, and is still technically reforming herself. The power will come back eventually, she knows, and she has all the time in the universe to reclaim it.

Affiliation

Bari acts as a Scout and Treasure Hunter for The Relic, a job she finds suitable due to her natural love of treasure collecting combined with the grim realization that she doesn't really need any more money or power that she won't get through the natural ways. She's a djinn, after all.
