Falling through the Veil

Sapphira looked around her tutor's studio. Several magical artifacts lay strewn about, glass bottles and vials of various potions glittered on the work table as a large cauldron simmered over burning coals in the hearth. Her power calling before the Court had not gone well, and that was putting it mildly. She could not summon flora or fauna, her enchanting of a human resulted in him being restrained..unfortunately that was where the real problems began.

As the besotted human ran at her she flinched and called forth a shadowy bolt of power that knocked the man all the way across the Great Hall. That was when the Queen stopped everything and emptied the chambers; Sapphira had been ushered to her tutor's and had been there several hours. "What could possibly be the problem?" she thought. She ran both hands down the plain cotton shift she wore, her auburn hair plaited simply down her back she paced and forth before the fire fidgeting with her hands.

A few more minutes passed and the doors squeaked open and two large guards lumbered in followed by her tutor Eris and Nerisvyre her mother and finally the Queen. Sapphira's mother stood with the tutor and sighed quietly. She knew well of her daughter's powers and had actually attempted many times to bind them knowing it was like cutting off an appendage to a true fae. She'd finally found a tutor who would keep their secrets but she always suspected Sapphira would not have the same inherent powers of the fae.

The Queen looked down at everyone before resting her gaze on the girl...she was pretty enough however those powers were a threat to the Court of Light and to them all. She could not allow such unnaturalness to remain. "It would not be so bad if her other powers were not so much more power than my own" the Queen thought, the human male finally had to be sedated and was currently being taken to a wooded glade.

The Queen looked at Sapphira with a sneer which caused Sapphira to shiver faintly. No fae's awakening had ever been stopped as hers had been. She was well aware of the unusualness of her powers, but didn't that just make her even more fae? Her kind were not known for being usual, however the fact the only other fae with powers like hers were the past Queens of the Dark Court and the wild fae who lived in the badlands that bordered the mortal realm. Sapphira having been born in the Seelie court should have had powers of Light; the fact that she could draw from the Darkness as well as summon the weather but was by blood a Seelie made her a target in the worst way.

The Queen nodded and one guard forcefully shoved her mother and tutor out while the other leered and came at her with a grin. Her cobalt eyes flashed, "I should have expected this." she thought for a second before rage began to take over. They thought her so weak as to be broken like nothing? Never! "Sapphira!!" she heard her mother's screams and the scuffling of her tutor's staff. The guard had reached her and had one hand around her throat choking the life from her "No!" she thought as he banged her head against a work table. "Break her...completely" she heard the far off voice of the Queen say.

The sound of a door slamming and more screaming is what did break Sapphira, but not nearly in the way the Queen hand ordered. "NO!!" Sapphira screams had somehow turned into howls as she pulled her knees up and planted both feet in the guard's gut. Able to gulp down air she waited 2 seconds for her vision to clear somewhat before sending forth a single thought to her mother "I love you..." she then looked at the Queen and raised her hand calling forth a dark portal beneath her slippered feet, the swirling shadowy circle gaped wider as several long, slithery tentacles rose out of it surrounding the Queen batting her back and forth, Sapphira smiled faintly at the Queen's shrieks of terror.

Raising both hands Sapphira seemed to calm the howling winds as she summoned the power of the heavens, a massive dark grey cloud swirled overhead. Twisted bolts of lightning blasted from the center of it hitting the door and blasting a hole through it, she saw her mother bravely fighting off the guard alongside her tutor. The Queen looked at her and waved her hand and it felt as though all the lightning was now inside Sapphira's head. She concentrated for what felt like too long as she glanced up at her mother and raised her hand causing her mother and her tutor to teleport to safety.

"You will never hurt me...you are not strong enough" she said raspily as she sent blast after blast of dark energy at the Queen's force fields, her guards long since dead. As the storm slowly turned overhead, she aimed and let go of one pure, focused beam of dark energy which cracked the Queen's defenses. She then went to aim one last powerful gale at her when the Queen mustered her powers and hit Sapphira with a blast of lightning which knocked her back and out the window and down through the misty fog that surrounded her tutor's tower. Swirling colors and mist enveloped her as she fell unconscious to what she thought would be her death.

Long after dark Sapphira woke with a start, her head swam as she tried to sit up quickly warning her to take it slow or suffer the consequences. She looked around to find herself in a small, stone walled room on a makeshift cot. Outside what sounded like a war was raging forced her to rise and try to look out the window but could only see flashes and smoke outside. Suddenly the door creaked open and caring a single lantern Sapphira's mother hurried into the room. "Mother!" she cried rushing over and hugging her tightly. Nerisvyre hugged her child tight "Come now we have to hurry" she said wrapping her in a woolen blanket she had on her arm. "The Queen has sent out the Wild Hunt for you, only with Eris' help have we been able to shield you from them." she said as she led her daughter down the narrow stone hallway.

Sapphira was led into a large gated room in which the stones had runes carved into them; a large circular stone was set in the center in which glowed a circle of ancient Sylvan runes. "I am going to send you to safety" her mother said determinedly as she bolted the gate behind them and nudged Sapphira to stand in the rune circle. "But...Mother I can fight her..." Sapphira protested as her mother laid a narrow line of sand around the circle. "NO! You can fight her and win but can you fight the Wild Hunt?" Nerisvyre said quickly. Sapphira quieted at the mention of the secretive band of hunters who did the Queen's bidding but who were essentially controlled by no one.

"The Wild Hunt? She called the Wild Hunt out for me?" Sapphira said with a hurt note in her voice "She thinks I am a monster that should be put down" she pulled the blanket around her as her tutor stepped forward and placed a hand on her arm "The Queen is weakened and frightened. Your powers outpace hers on her best day...you are no longer safe here" he said quietly. She sighed again and nodded.

Far above them she could her the sounds of the night, farther off she could hear the baying of the hounds that ran with the Hunt. "I will come back for you Mother" she said suddenly as tears fell from her eyes. Her mother and tutor chanted softly the runes beneath her feet suddenly spinning and beginning to glow a bright blue-white, a swirling circle growing from the center of the stone. She looked at her mother one last time and smiled "I will come back for you!" she yelled as she felt herself lifted up and spun around. It felt as though she was shot forward but all the while she was encased in a bubble of light, she would not even open her eyes as all she could hear was rushing wind and even through her closed eyes she could see the bright light.

Time seemed to stop until suddenly she landed first on her feet which her knees would not hold her so she tumbled back onto her behind on the hard cement. Loud sirens blared in the distance and everything seemed cold and hard and dark. "Where have you sent me? she whispered as she looked around.
