Overview
As a child, John Ellis spent his nights dreaming of a chance to explore the stars and find new life in the heavens. His gifted mind easily grasped the ideas of various scientific areas of expertise however, and he grew up as somewhat of a child prodigy. By the time he was 21, he was working on his second doctorate. Some of his earliest tinkering went into the design of equipment later used by his brother Richard, the original Grey Osprey.
John Ellis designed the orbiting headquarters satellite for the House of Heroes supergroup, at the request of the since-retired hero Red Tarantula, and then served as their technical director for the facility and supergroup for a period of time. His time and his resources were put to use during this time to establish the House of Heroes satellite HQ as the meeting hall for a small coalition of heroes, an accomplishment he was quite proud of. He saw this as his way to give back to the world, much in the way his brother did as the Grey Osprey. During this time, John met the enigmatic Maker of Artifacts, and the scientist found a sort of kindred spirit to discuss his technological ideas with. He invited Maker to work in his special Research and Development Division and gave his friend free run to work on whatever projects came to mind. This was in many ways a Golden Age for Ellis, professionally and personally.
Things began to change for John when the Rikti struck however. First his brother Richard was killed in battle against the Rikti in Paragon City, during the first Rikti War. The death of his brother, who he had always looked up to, shattered John privately, though he did his best to maintain a cool, calm demeanor to everyone. It was John who worked to cover up the identity of his brother and keep the secret of his heroic alter-ego from getting out. He was torn between wanting to see his brother's achievements and sacrifices recognized, and keeping his brother's widow, Rachel, and daughter,Andrea, safe from his former enemies.
His friend and colleague, the Maker of Artifacts, then left the employ of Ellis Industries to begin work in secret for the Vanguard.
A few years passed and John Ellis's work with alien technologies and their use by other heroes brought him to the attention of Sovereign Starlette, who offered him a unique opportunity to harness the extraterrestrial technologies he was researching and to become a hero himself. Outfitting a suit of nano-computer-controlled armor with the weapons and equipment he'd been reverse-engineering, Ellis became the Scarlet - Centurion. In his heroic persona he worked publicly as the human liaison for the alien membership of the supergroup known as The Star Emperium.
After helping the group get on it's feet, Ellis decided to return to the House of Heroes, where he could do the most good as a leader and advisor to the heroes in the satellite he created. He is now firmly committed to using his time to aid the supergroup's growth and development, while also advising the fledgling heroes of Web-Spinner's Amazing Friends.

Not long after was when Ellis was first approached by Sovereign Starlette, who had heard of his work with alien technologies and their potential use. After creating his new heroic identity, he joined the Star Emperium as their human liaison in an effort to help the group establish smooth ties to the city's superhero community and civilian population.

Powers
While Dr. Ellis himself has no innate superhuman abilities, his various suits of armor allow him to enter combat as the heroic Scarlet Centurion. Their abilities are listed below.
Energy Blasts
The Mark IV armor provides the greatest number of ranged attacks, allowing him to strike at his enemies with blasts generated by particle emitters in the suit. These blasts can be set up to attack targets one at a time, as a cone of particle blasts targeting multiple enemies, or as a burst of power that is released at all enemies who have surrounded him.
Energy Manipulation
All variants of the Scarlet Centurion armor rely on the manipulation of projected energy fields to deliver powerful blows in melee combat against all manner of enemies. Additionally, Dr. Ellis can use the on-board systems to reroute power through the suit to temporarily boost any of its other abilities, most often used to provide additional damage for his attacks.
Energy Shields
His heavy duty Mark VI armor includes an energy shield generator in his left gauntlet. This energy shield is based on the technology previously developed for use by his late brother Richard, the original Grey Osprey, and it grants the armor a high level of protection from all attacks. It should be noted that the shield generator previously used by Richard is now in the possession of Richard's daughter Andrea, who has taken on the mantle of the Grey Osprey to carry on the family legacy. Because the shield generator in the Mark VI armor can draw from the suit's overall theta particle power supply, it allows for a higher level of protection than the portable, gauntlet-based unit used by the Richard and now Andrea.
