The son of renowned Physicist Marie Caldwell and famed Professor Craig Caldwell, Ben was reading Homer and Plato while other kids his age were reading Dr. Seuss. Do to the intellectual cloud always present in his house, Ben is extremely well educated, but bitter for missing out on a 'fun' childhood. In high school, this bitterness led Ben to intentionally fail courses and cause trouble. Ben's insolence prompted his parents to send him to boarding school to learn respect. While riding on the PTA, Ben made an unexpected stop, attracted by the bright lights and bustling population.
Ben also harbored another secret that set him apart from his classmates, he was cool, literally. Discovering his icy abilities by accident one day in gym class, Ben immediately set about learning the extent of his new powers. Sudden pranks at his high school, as well Ben's uncanny ability to be at the scene of the crime helped contribute to his expulsion. These factors ultimately led to Ben's decision to stop in Paragon, the City of Heroes and don the moniker of 'Kid Slick' in hopes of regaining his lost childhood, meeting plenty of fine women, and saving the world and stuff.
During a routine mission with his SuperGroup, the Young Justiciars, the Hero known as Kid Slick was caught in a fiery blast from teammate Thermal Transfer. Burned and scarred, Slick retreated from active duty in order to begin to get his life back in order as a civilian. Soon however, the beginnings of what seemed to be the ability of fire manipulation began to appear, to complement his pre-existing ice control. Re-emerging in the Young Justiciars line-up with a new look and a new name, Scorching Shiver is back to once again bash the baddies, get the gal, and have a heckuva time doin' it.
