Shade Wield/Technology
From Unofficial Handbook of the Virtue Universe
Shade Wield possessed numerous highly advanced technological items - both on his person, and in his base - which are worthy of special note. Most of these were either invented by him, or bought from aquaintences. However there are some of particularly unusual origin.

Gadgetry
While possessing no formal qualifications, Shade is quite adept at (in his words) 'fiddling with stuff, and making it work'. He is no mechanical genius, but he does possess a strange ability to find exactly the right equipment, put it in exactly the right position and configure it in exactly the right way, to make it work. His equipment consists of items as varied as:
T.D.I. Insulation armour - One of his first inventions. Molecularly unstable material that provides rigid structure to armoured clothing, but maintains incredible flexibility. It functions by insulating the wearer from external temperature variations, effectively 'saving' the wearers optimal temperature. As well as that, it converts heat and other forms of energy into kinetic force. This results in things such as fireballs, ice bolts or radiation beams being change from life-threatening to feeling like a strong kick to the chest. Still painful, but not fatal.
Grappling hooks - Commonly used to aid him getting around the city, as well as tying up foes.
Voice recorders built into his comms system - Often used for pranks, but sometimes put to 'heroic' use.
Filtration system build into his mask - Capable of resisting most poisonous gases.
Flash grenades - Capable of blinding individuals within a certain distance.
Kinetic shielding units - Limited charge, but able to deflect most incoming weaponry.
Tasers powered by Rikti Plasma generators - Firing a burst of debilitating energy twenty feet.
"Shock pad" gloves - Fire an electrical charge into enemies that both causes pain, and debilitates their body co-ordination, lessening their ability to impact the fight.
Non-visible spectrum goggles - Usually hidden in the top of his hood, these googles can fold down to display a number of non-visible light spectrums in a manner that makes it visible to humans. However, they require a great deal of power to use, and are thus used sparingly.
After his death, most of these went missing.
Outfit
His outfit itself is incredibly well designed. It is covered in incredibly strong metal armour wherever possible, capable of sustaining a Rikti Plasma bolt and surviving. As well as that, the material itself is T.D.I. (Temperature Dependant Insulation), one of his inventions mentioned above.
He has recently designed a more efficient outfit, but one he wears only sparingly. It is slightly more uncomfortable, but has space for all his gadgetry, meaning he doesn't have to pick and choose which to take with him. Even more recently all of his 'heroic' outfits have been updated with Vanguard technology, providing even more protection as well as giving the onboard computer systems an uplink to Vanguard HQ (and through that, giving A.I. Suite 1 an uplink.)
Base of operations
When he moved into his new life and apartment, Shade discovered that beneath his Skyway apartment was an old Supergroup base abandoned since the first Rikti war. Thinking 'waste not, want not', Shade modified a bookcase with a secret tunnel that leads down to the base. It's slow progress, getting the extensive complex up and running again, but already he managed to get the lab system fully powered and operational, and had plans to get the training simulation room working as soon as possible.
Since his death and the revelation of his identity, there instantly was a 'goldrush' of people eager to get their hands on his technology, and one of the first places looted was his old apartment. The base was discovered easily enough, but strangely enough it was completely empty. It's unknown where everything was taken, but while some institutions have received generous donations of chemicals and technical equipment, there isn't enough to have filled the laboratory, meaning some must still be out there.
Laboratory
The first room made operational, the Lab was very well stocked with chemicals and compounds of a large variety (albeit with little organisation). As well as this stockpile, the room possessed a molecular analyser, a powerful electron microscope, biological examiner and what he affectionately refered to as a 'tech study'. The Tech Study is a device of his own creation that runs a very specific pulse of electricity through a device, one that is easy to track. This in essence maps out the workings of nearly any electrical device that functions on Earth-based technology. Although it doesn't define the workings of the device without error, it matches the electrical signal's path as closely as it can to it's database of electronic components (chips, resistors, transistors, etc) to make a vague guess as to it's potential purpose. All different possibilities are then laid out, as well as it's in-depth analysis, allowing a more human touch to possibly find the answer.
An unusual addition Shade made to the Lab - seeing as it's essentially the essence to his newly excavated homebase - is a series of red LEDs attached to a pair of highly sensitive motion sensors at the door, the LEDs forming a square around the floor they're on blocking further progress into the base. As well as that, a series of three red laser-sights attached to motion trackers (modified to look like energy weapons of some kind) are throughout the room, aimed at the entrance. While not connected to anything specific, this is intended as a bluff for any trying to gain entrance to his base without his approval. It takes a sturdy individual to be willing to walk further into a room when three red-dot laser sights attached to energy weapons are aimed at your chest, while around your feet are what looks like an alarm system. To further the illusion, they can be switched off by Shade's voicecode shouted into the room, making anyone who enters alongside him feel certain there is a strong security system in place.
Computer systems
Not much is known about the specifics of the workings (and origins) of the computer system Shade Wield's underground base employs, but it's results cannot be argued with. It's current primary function is to constantly scan all electronic information available, focusing on metahuman and unusual occurances, and cross reference all noteworthy files with previously archived information which includes:
- 1. Mythological and fable references
- 2. Historical archives
- 3. Portal corps points of interest from interdimensional exploration
- 4. Previously analysed and archived information
As the information is analysed, it's then sorted by importance/relevance into appropriate electronic documents which Shade can then read at the end of the day, as well as filed away under appropriate keywords for later retreival (unless it's related to a previously filed topic, in which case it's attached to that topic to allow later browsing).
A.I. Suite 1
With recent life threatening events, it's been revealed that Shade's computer system is at least partially sentient. It's unknown how he came across this highly advanced computer system, but it's very unlikely he designed it himself. It has been revealed one of the A.I. Suite's protocols is to monitor Shade's vital signs and position in the city, and send for help if he is in severe trouble.
One of the more disturbing factors of this A.I. is it's name. 'Suite 1', implying that there either exists (or are plans for) further A.I. Suites.
Upon Shade's death, all signs of A.I. Suite 1 have been erased by some computer savvy individual. If A.I Suite 1 still exists, it is hiding under the grid, if this is of its own choice is unknown.
Operations files
Something known by very few people is that Shade kept reasonably accurate files about every single Metahuman he knew about. Many of these are compiled by the computer system mentioned above, simply correlating as much information as it can from all available electronic sources, ranking the information for verifiability. There are quite a number he added his own notes to, most specifically those he feels are either grave enough potential threats to earn personal spying (such as Irmine), or those he is particularly close to. He even kept these files on people he considers completely trustworthy and is friends with, simply because he believes in being prepared, a factor that paid off several times before his death.
As with everything else, these files have gone missing.
