Biography
Koji Takawana was born to a family of third-generation Japanese immigrants living in the greater Los Angeles area. With nothing connecting him to his Asian roots save his appearance and the traditions of his grandparents, Koji enjoyed the life of the typical American teenager. Having just graduated high school with no real future plans, he worked at a video store while his small circle of friends moved out into the world to attend various universities. With enough to see and do in his own town, Koji was content with a life of mediocrity, but this was not meant to be.
Unbeknown to him, Koji was born a mutant, and the strange trick of his genetic structure was already at work for some time before revealing itself. It would not become obvious until one hot summer day when several members of a local gang entered Koji's place of business with the intent to steal. While the hoodlums brandishes weapons and destroyed merchandise, even this hectic situation might have been saved where it not for the timely arrival of the police. A simple smash-and-grab quickly became an unlikely hostage situation, and Koji was among those grabbed and forced to sit with a few other weeping customers as chances for survival seemed to dwindle.
It was then that, in the growing build of adrenaline and the stress of the situation, that an amazing bodily changed nearly exploded around him. In what seemed like an instant Koji transformed from a medium-sized young man to a bulky, steel-skinned behemoth. The nearby criminals, upon seeing this event with disbelieving eyes, naturally panicked and began unloading rounds of ammunition at him. Koji cowered, but the bullets were deflected from his new body's surface without rendered him any harm.
Hearing the rapid explosion of gunfire, the police presumed the breakdown of negotiations and rushed inside. To their surprise they found the gang members attempting to flee, gibbering about a giant metal monster within. When Koji emerged and the press arrived, he was soon hailed as a hero who saved the day with his newfound powers, preventing serious injury to all involved.
Months of medical testing later showed the extent of Koji's mutation, which had turned not only his epidermis into a kind of sleek, slivery metal, but also muscle, bones, and several of his internal organs as well. He had also gained weight at a remarkable rate due to further changes in his metabolism, changing nearly all the food he tried to intake into dense metallic mass. Once assured that this change was irreversible, but probably not fatal, Koji considered the options left to him as a normal life was no longer possible.
After much discussion with his family Koji finally decided on traveling to Paragon City. There, in the City of Heroes, he could find social acceptance, a community of people with similar circumstances, and a way to use his powers and abilities for the public good. With his financial worries and education taken care of by way of a superhero scholarship unique to Paragon University, he would soon settle in to a brand new life all his own. Inspired and encouraged by his extended family, Koji latched onto a name and look that would be his most ready identifier in the days to come as well as a nod to his cultural heritage. Now he was the Silver Sumo!
Physical Attributes
The Silver Sumo is a hulking metal man whose mutation gives him many distinct properties.
Despite the name, his surface is not composed of silver, or any other element found in nature, but instead a kind of organic alloy some have taken to call "omnium." It is hard and extremely impervious to damage, yet appears to bend and be flexible in a manner allowing Silver Sumo to move. His skeletal structure has also been similarly transformed, adding to his impressive durability.
Silver Sumo's muscular system has also been transformed, consisting mainly of powerful metal chords. This not only gives him the strength to move his tremendous bulk, but much more besides. The act of doing something like lobbing a car would not even begin to tax the abilities of the Silver Sumo.
Finally, several of his internal organs are composed of the same stuff while others have only partially transformed. What this might mean for the future of the Silver Sumo is difficult to say, but as is he is increasingly immune to most known forms of disease. The chemical processes which allow him to live and function do not require oxygen. Standard poisons have little effect on him, which also holds true for alcohol.
Group Membership
The Silver Sumo is not currently a member of any Super Group, though is considering his options, having received several solicitations.
Trivia
- The red circle on his chest, in imitation of the Japanese flag, is painted.
- Because of a neurological miscommunication he never feels completely full.
- The food that he eats is not digested by normal means, but is eventually transmuted into metal and added to his density. He does not expel waste.
