In-Game Bio

"Man is the only animal for whom his own existence is a problem which he has to solve."

- Erich Fromm

Why am I doing this? Well, I suppose I can tell you, in gratitude for your service to me.

I believe in God. That is a statement often misunderstood. I believe in the All that is separate of myself. I believe all that exists is but the merest part of it. You and I, this rock, this bird, this tree, this molecule of water, this mite that lives upon your eyelid, we are all part of the All. This universe is but an intricate puzzle. You are born knowing nothing but your own piece. At first you discover your mother, then air, then what it is to breathe, and so on. Every piece you collect adds to your view of the overall puzzle. Someday, if you know all of the pieces, you shall know the face of God.

Hush, now. The anesthesia will have taken effect. Your reactions to pain aren't what is interesting about you and I am not needlessly cruel. Now, where was I...? Ah yes, the face of God.

I speak metaphorically, of course. God has no face. I do not childishly anthropomorphise the All into something like myself. Put simply: cherish every experience, for in it are clues that shall lead you to enlightenment. Why is this important, you ask? That is not your concern. You should concentrate on your own remaining moments, few though they may be. It is simply a matter of courtesy that I explain to you why I am dissecting you. You may take some pleasure in knowing what an interesting piece of God you are.

Affiliations

Link is an associate of Riot Gear; she finds it interesting to watch both the effect of their plots on the economy of the Rogue Isles, and the effect of the Rogue Isles upon the group of self-professed freethinkers that it is composed of. She does not as yet know D-38's real plans, though she suspects he (and a couple of other members) are using the organisation for their own purposes. Ultimately she finds the group useful as it does not pry too deeply into her past as long as she remains a faithful contributor to its operations; she also finds the other members often interesting in and of themselves.

Personality

Link seeks knowledge in all forms. She does not care to talk of her past, nor of the ultimate motivations of her quest for knowledge. She is a cool and reserved person, civil to most people she encounters, though she also has a surprisingly vicious temper if provoked. In a group of typically more flamboyant superpowered personalities, she tends to fade into the background, emerging only with an occasional observation or sharp-tongued rebuke. On assignment, she is efficient and professional, analytically supporting team members whose abilities are complementary to her own. She is always quick to retreat when an battle goes wrong, however, which has occasionally earned her jibes or hostility from partners. Link argues quite hotly that her way is tactically sound, allowing her and other survivors to regroup and launch a counterattack which can rescue fallen comrades, and indeed she does reliably return rather than simply abandoning her mission. Certain teammates bring up the subject to needle her, however.

Ultimately, Link is a loner. Her relationships with others rarely go beyond the shallow and professional; she herself is often described as 'colourless' and 'all business'. The exception is the people she finds truly interesting and unique, whom she will conspire to stay close to and observe, sometimes going to extraordinary lengths to find out more about them. A very few ex-partners of hers have vanished: believed captured by Longbow or killed by rivals, but in fact having been dissected by Link in order to find out the secrets of their peculiar abilities. She does this very rarely - only when the rewards outweigh the risk. Thus far, she has successfully concealed her involvement.

Despite her standoffish nature, Link actually nearly obsesses over what others think of her. She does not seek leadership and accepts orders quite calmly, but being condescended to (or worse, dismissed) grates on her. She will usually respond with uncharacteristic forcefulness to change the equation between her and the offending party to one more equal, often by showing them up as soon and as publically as possible. She isn't terribly subtle about her attempts to one-up someone who has slighted her; that would defeat the entire point, after all. On the flipside, she is rather easy to wheedle and flatter into assistance or advice on a situation.

The one passion of Link that everyone knows about is plants. She surrounds herself with green whenever possible, equally at home in a grassy meadow or the darkest depths of a jungle. Plants love her too; they grow with extraordinary speed in her presence. Her shàyù (see below) accompany her at all times like an escort; if she has no reason to let them wander, they often hide (in startling numbers) in and beneath her clothing.

Powers

Physically, Link is barely superior to an average human. She is perhaps on the level of a competent gymnast in fitness, and has no real experience or talent at physical combat. However, she makes up for that with her shàyù. Millions of tiny, magical insect-like creatures made of plant materials surround her at all times, crawling, flying and burrowing. They are the root (no pun intended) of most of her powers. While they may act independently, they are sensitive to Link's every thought and whim, and can react instantly to her commands. Thus, she has rather ingeniously stretched her minor magical talent to far greater lengths than if she applied it directly.

As well, Link is an incredibly gifted botanist and chemist. She may identify the properties and applications of any known plant species on sight, and has genetically and magically modified many to suit her own purposes. She is one of the most talented doctors on Earth and can cure almost any known illness, including the Vahzilok plague and Contaminated infection. She has no particular interest in spreading this knowledge, preferring to keep it as a bargaining chip should she ever be captured by heroic foes. She will extend her healing ability to comrades, though even there she jealously guards the full extent of her knowledge. As well, she is capable of brewing extremely potent poisons, many of which have ended up injected in her foes via shàyù designed for the task.

Teleportation

In exchange for several unspecified favours, Link has acquired a Sky Raider teleportation device which has been heavily modified for her own use, not only to transport herself and her legion of tiny servants, but also to draw weaker or unaware foes away from their comrades so she may more efficiently dispose of them. Who precisely modified the device is not information Link shares.

Weaknesses

Link's curiosity is her most well-known weakness. She was captured once by a well-placed Wyvern snare when she predictably responded to rumours of an experimental plant that regenerated wounds instantly. She has ever since been searching for the identity of who captured her; as well, in a bit of poetic revenge she has begun devising her own healing plant to deploy for the benefit of herself and allies.

Her ego can also trip her up; Link feels the need to avenge slights, and although she is patient, she never forgets a grudge.

Link reacts very badly to unexpected situations; when caught without a plan of action, her first response is to panic and run.
