Personality
Speedstar is a quiet, reserved individual, mostly as an outgrowth of her move from one reality to another. Even those things that are similar here to her own world are disquietingly different, causing Star to remain focused inward.
Powers
Jennifer's new powers stem from a form of pyrokinesis. Able to manifest flames from her body, she has lost most of her older powers. As a side affect, her accelerated metabolism has given her increased speed related abilities, many of which can be manifested upon others. She also has limited telekinetic powers, manifesting in an ability to levitate her own body for the purpose of flight.
Her former powers were entirely based upon her enormous Psi abilities. Unlike other mutants that use energy beams, strength, or accelerated healing, Jennifer's abilities were entirely based around her mind and will. Able to inflict pain or heal with but a thought, her abilities were powerful indeed. These powers, at least at this time, have been superseded or replaced by her pyrokinetic ability.
Character History
Jennifer Tompkins is a native of Paragon City, but not the one we all know. One theory of quantum mechanics holds that there are an infinite number of alternate universes, or "quantum realities". For every event that happens, there are universes that exist where every possible outcome for that event takes place, creating some realities that are nearly identical to our own, and others that are radically different. Jennifer Tomkins' native reality lacked any super heroes, and also had an intact U.S.S.R. as of 2005. Facing the imminent collapse of their communist system, several hard line elements in the Red Army took control of several nuclear missile silos in Siberia. During a joint U.S. and Soviet mission to retake the facilities, one of the missiles was accidentally launched. The lone ICBM crossed the north pole on a direct course for Paragon City. Lacking any means to deflect the missile, the United States Government issued an evacuation order for the city. Unfortunately, the flight time of the missile was insufficient to evacuate more then a small fraction of the total population. Alexis was a student at Paragon University near the city center. The evacuation alert was broadcast over the public address system at the university library where she was cramming for her history midterm. Mere minutes later, the missile's nuclear warhead detonated above downtown Paragon City.
Had it not been for this catastrophe, Jennifer would probably have gone through her entire life without recognizing her innate mutant powers. The massive energy release of the nuclear explosion activated her mutation, but it also had another side affect. Instead of simply being incinerated in the initial blast, the activation of her latent mutant powers in the face of an atomic explosion caused her to react reflexively, and she used her powers to move herself out of danger.
Her powers, not fully under her control, pushed her from her own quantum reality into that of "our" Paragon City. Appearing in the Library of the Paragon City University, she immediately lost consciousness. She was quickly rushed to Chiron Medical Center, as the university students assumed she was must have been one of Paragon City's costumed crusaders given her unique method of appearing in their midst.
Left in a coma, Jennifer was unconscious for several weeks time as she received what treatment was available. The problem was that when her ID records were run, it was discovered that she was in fact dead. The Jennifer Tompkins native to our reality had been killed in the initial Rikti invasion in 2002, and her body had been confirmed amongst the dead. This, along with the apparent metahuman powers that were detectable even in her dormant state, lead to the involvement of several federal agencies charged with investigating possible trans-dimensional activities. The theory at the time was that perhaps Tompkins had been taken, altered, and then sent back to Paragon as an agent of the some alternate dimensional force, a vanguard of a new invasion.
Moved to a federal facility for testing, Jennifer eventually regained consciousness. Her tales of an alternate earth, along with testing that revealed she was in fact not in sync with the quantum frequency of matter in our universe finally quieted the fears that she was an agent of trans-dimensional aliens. After clearance, she began to explore the extent of her powers with the assistance of Dr. Randolph Agathon.
During this time, she began to try to recreate the ability she had used to bring herself to our world. She believed she had discovered how to do so, but was unable to guide her travel between realities. She was dissuaded from any attempt to try to shift back to her reality when she was told how her initial transference had caused her quantum structure to weaken. If she were to make another transfer in the manner that she had initially, she risked the dangers of entropic cascade failure. Any shift could lead to her quantum structure breaking down within a matter of weeks, perhaps even days. The entropic forces caused by dimensional transference would quite literally tear her apart. Jennifer knew she was stuck in our universe, and would have to make the best of it.
Forced to stay in this quantum reality, Jennifer chose to use her newfound powers in the service of the United States Government. The government realized what a benefit having such a hero, one who's real identity was actually that of a deceased individual. The odds of her being recognized were minimal, given that nobody would be looking for her to be the dead Jennifer Tompkins. Giving her the code name National Star, the Federal Bureau for Super-powered Affairs outfitted her as a super hero and sent her to serve the interests of the nation in Paragon City.
After years of service, Jennifer was assisting other heroes in defending the Terra Volta reactor against a raid by Sky Raider attack forces. It was during this time that she was exposed to extreme levels of radiation in the unshielded reactor core. The net effect of this exposure was the complete and total alteration of her abilities. Her psi based powers disappeared, only to be replaced by a form of pyrokenisis. The FBSA decided that her original use in monitoring heroes was incompatible with her new abilities, and decided to re-task her as a tactical asset for over-seas deployments. Uncomfortable with the her new role as a tool to implement the foreign policy created by politicians in Washington, Jennifer left the FSBA and was forced to give up her old identity. Forced to operate as an independent entity, Jennifer chose the new codename Speedstar.
