Star Sojourner
From Unofficial Handbook of the Virtue Universe
The Star Sojourner is the first character I made on Virtue. He is one of a number of Peacebringers who operate in Paragon City which seems to be an epicenter for the activies of the kheldians' longtime foe, the Nictus.
Biography
Leon Bruchetti was a scientist working aboard the International Space Station when it was struck by what appeared to be some sort of strange crystiline meteor that had lodged in the hull of the space station. Motes of dark energy came swarming out of the metor, possessing the station's crew. Soon only Leon was left still free.
Leon decided that the only thing to do was detach the section of the station the meteor was embedded in and let it burn up on re-entry, hopefully destroying the meteor. A possessed crewman had disabled the main controls, which left the manual controls at the section itself. Dodging around possessed crewmembers he arrived at the manual control panel. He was about to detach the section when a mote of darkness appeaered an entered him! He could feel it starting to take hold when a mote of light appeared out of nowhere and entered him as well! This mote of light was a kheldian. It was thanks to this kheldian that he was able to expel the Nictus trying to possess him. It was also thanks to being joined to a Kheldian that he was able to survive being blown out into space when the section was hastily detached. Leon awoke back at his apartment back on earth. However, he was no longer just Leon Bruchetti, he was now the peacebringer know as the Star Sojourner.
Kheldians and the Nictus
The Kheldians are a race living energy beings. Like all things that live, the Kheldians must eventually die as they individual energy matrixes eventually lose integrity causing the energies to finally disperse. The average lifespan of a Kheldian is just 10 years. For a long time the Kheldians were content with the time alloted to them by fate, for they knew nothing else.
Eventually, though Kheldians encountered organic matter beings, and they made several big discoveries in rapid succession. One was how short their lives were in comparison to other races; serious discontent over their fated lot began to grow. Another discovery was that they were able to join with organic matter beings in a symbiotic union. The organic host gain access to kheldian energy and could use and manipulate it in a number of ways. The Kheldians learned that being inside a host reinforced the energy matrix that made up their beings. In other words, they stopped aging for the time they were bonded to a host. Inevitably, however, a Kheldian must spend time outside a host as one host expired before they can find a new one. The second they are outside a host, the clock starts running again for them. Although serial bonding with hosts can greatly extend a kheldian's life, they must still die one day.
Kheldian scientists would go on to make a discovery that would cause a war amoung their kind that rages to this day. A cabal of Kheldian scientists theorized that it might be possible to use organic hosts to not just extend a kheldian's life, but actually achieve immortality! If a kheldian could draw upon the host's lifeforce, they could not just suspend their aging but actually add years to their lives. They could get back the time spent between hosts and more! Many kheldians were horrifed by this proposal, saying this would change them from symbiotes to parasites. Other embraced this idea and the treatment that was devised that would allow them to acheive it. Why should they just accept fate? Bonding to hosts had freed them from the brief lives fate had imposed upon them, why surrender to death now when there was an option?
Those kheldians who embraced the scientists' idea underwent the devised treatment and became the nictus. Caught off-guard, the opposition who chose the path of symbiosis over parasitism were conquered and enslaved. For years they laboured for their nictus masters, sometimes having their energies drained by the nictus in order to further extend their lives. The kheldians were able to eventually launch a successful rebellion and throw off the the nictus' yoke. Since that time the kheldians and the nictus have fought a war across time and worlds as the kheldians seek to stop the nictus' quest to attain eternal life by devouring the lives of others.
Being a Peacebringer
When a kheldian bonds with a host, the mind of the kheldian and the host blend together to create a third personality which is a composite of the two beings. This composite being is known as a Peacebringer.
As a peacebringer, the kheldian can channel its energies through Leon's body to acheive a variety of effects. The most direct appliction is using this energy to attack, either in the form of energy blasts or by forming a charged field around the extremites to augment hand-to-hand attacks. The energy can also be used defensively, to create force field to block attacks, shift the host out of phase, and temporarily grant others the same powers of flight that the Star Sojourner himself enjoys. The Star Sojourner can also channel the kheldian energy to either heal the host body or others.
One of the more dramatic applications of this energy manipulation is the ability to surround the host body with energy and shape it into a sort of energy clone of the kheldian's past hosts. The most frequent forms called upon are ones known as the "Bright Nova" and the "White Dwarf." The Bright Nova is a re-creation of the inhabitant of a gas giant world. It can fly swiftly and has a superior abilty to channel the kheldian energy for ranged attacks, but it has no defense.
The White Dwarf is a re-creation of the inhabitant of a high-gravity world. It is slow but highly durable and attacks with large, powerful fists.
The bane of a peacebringer's existance is the quantum rifles created by the nictus. These rifles shoot quantum energy that can nullify a kheldian's energy. Not only can this weapon kill a peacebringer in 2 or 3 shots, it can also disrupt the use of their powers. The nictus arrived on earth ahead of the kheldiens. Knowing that their foes would eventually track them down, the nictus decided to make things more difficult for the peacebringers by selling quantum rifles to various criminal groups so that it would not be just the nictus that would pose a credible danger to the peacebringer.
