Taloned Owl
From Unofficial Handbook of the Virtue Universe
Taloned Owl is the main character of player @TalonedOwl. She debuted around Christmas in 2004 on the City of Heroes Pre-Beta forums when the player decided that he would rather have a character to play homage to his favorite superhero, Catwoman. Taloned Owl has since undergone two history retcons because of the desire for the player to try and take a more realistic Approach to the Character he loves and enjoys the most. Long story short, Taloned Owl is what happens when you give Catwoman the claws of Lady Deathstrike and place her into a situation similar to the plot of Kill Bill.

Supergroup Affiliation
For most of her criminal career, Taloned Owl has shied away from joining an official supergroup and remaining a member for longer than a couple of months. Though she has been offered membership to many great supergroups in Paragon, she prefers to work solo as she has done for the majority of her career. She has formerly been involved with The Icons and The Bone Squad alongside vigilante, Charon.
Personality
Many people best describe Taloned Owl as being shy and quiet. The true reason for this is that she’s observant of the people she meets and the situatins she finds herself in. Around her friends, she can be described as warm, friendly, and a bit of a jokester. However, there are rarely second chances with Taloned Owl. If you cross her, her demeanor towards the person may become a bit hostile. In battle, her personality can switch at anytime from cocky and a bit sexual to the hardnosed leader. Nonetheless, none of this stops her from getting the job done.
Character History
Throughout the course of history, there have been two people to operate under the codename Taloned Owl. The former was a Hispanic Hero who want by the name Buho de la Garra, a golden aged hero who got his start protecting a racially divided Los Angeles during WWII America. The latter is his granddaughter who took up the mantle under her own individual circumstances.
Buho de la Garra
In the mid-1930’s, Mexican-American Andres Alvarez and Black-American Hosanna White meet for the first time at a seedy Los Angeles nightclub called The Blue Room, which primarily catered to people of color. At the time, Andres Alvarez had strong connections with the Mexican-American gang known as the 38th Street Gang through his brother, Juan Alvarez. Hosanna White’s family, who ran The Blue Room, was noted for being linked with popular New York Gangster, Ellsworth "Bumpy" Johnson.
Hosanna and Andres took an immediate liking to one another, despite their racial differences. Hosanna worked with Andres on his American-English, while Andres frequently took the religiously sheltered Hosanna exploring the Los Angeles nightlife.
Juan Alvarez was found gun down in an L.A. alley, causing Andres to leave the city for a short period of time. He shut everyone out of his life and resented gang activity for taking away his last living relative. With no one to turn to, Andres only maintained contact with Hosanna through letters during his isolation, and even this was limited. The last person heard of Andres was of him leaving the States to clear his mind. Little did they know, he was actually plotting his revenge on organized criminal activity by training with a renowned martial artist in Japan.
Towards the late 1930’s, Andres returned back to the city, seemingly wealthier and with a new view on life. The first thing he did was visit Hosanna, who was now performing as a singer at The Blue Room. During his absence, a hit had been ordered on Andres’ head by the 38th Street Gang. Upon seeing that he returned to Los Angeles, five members of the 38th Street gang in attendance at The Blue Room attacked Andres. Unfortunately for the men, Andres’ extensive training in Japan made him an offensive power house. That night, he brutally beat the three men and left them on the streets of Los Angeles.
Hosanna witnessed this and noticed the lingering hatred in Andres’ eyes. Seeing that his retreat to Japan did nothing for his short-temper, Hosanna exposed Andres to the Bible and it’s teachings. While Andres didn’t accept the Bible teachings initially, he still took certain principles to heart. He began to believe that his martial art prowess was a form of blessing from god, and that he should use his gift to eradicate some of the criminal element that had begun to plague the racially charged Los Angeles area. Adopting a black costume very much similar to Zorro, a favored pulp character from his youth, Andres debuted as Buho de la Garra, which roughly translated to Taloned Owl.
By the beginning of 1940, Buho de la Garra had become an established vigilante in the Los Angeles area. Openly despised by the Los Angeles Police Force, he was secretly admired for his ability to go beyond the law and stomp out organized crime of the times. Buho de la Garra also stood staunchly for the equality of all people, despite whatever race they were. Due to this, he frequently patrolled areas where it was common for people to attack others because of racial differences. This frequently put him at odds with the L.A.P.D. due to their prejudices within the department. The only person to be entrusted with the secret identity of Buho de la Garra is Hosanna, who have been dating on and off since his return to the states.
Also occurring in 1940, Andres proposes marriage to Hosanna and that they should move away from the racially charged Los Angeles area to raise a family relatively free of discrimination. Hosanna is reluctant to leave behind her family and The Blue Room, but Andres comfors her in saying that an actual marriage won’t occur until later down the line, when both of them know that the time is right. Hosanna agrees to this.
In 1942, Buho de la Garra was labeled an accomplice by the L.A.P.D. for a murder which occurred at Sleepy Lagoon when a gang brawl broke out and Jose Diaz was killed. He was labeled as a pachuco and was considered to be a dangerous threat to the city. Nearly 600 youth, predominately Mexican-American, were rounded up by the L.A.P.D. for questioning in regards to who murdered Jose Diaz and the true Identity of Buho de la Garra. Amidst all this, people remained convinced that Buho de la Garra had nothing to do with the murder. Unfortunately, it’s the L.A.P.D. that makes that enforces the law, not the citizens.
To make things worse, the racial tension in Los Angeles began to elevate further. Military Personnel and the L.A.P.D. clashed frequently with “Pachuco’s”, a slang term used to describe delinquent Mexican-Americans who dressed in flamboyant zoot suits. The abundance of these attacks put Buho de la Garra to work frequently, and began to take a strain on the relationship between Andres and Hosanna. The one thing that kept them together was their love for one another.
In May of 1943, clashes between the law enforcement and “Zoots” comes to an all time high as the Sailors and soldiers clash violently with Mexican-American youth in the open streets of Los Angeles. This causes Buho de la Garra to call in favors with other well known superheroes of the time to help him with the patrol of Los Angeles, despite the fact that WWII was going on at the same time.
On June 3rd, 1943, racial tensions in L.A. explode on to the streets when approximately 50 sailors march into the streets of L.A. and attack anyone wearing a zoot suit. The started the Mexican-American neighborhoods near the Armory. Buho de la Garra is able to cull most of the attacks. Setting up a task force of eight heroes he’d worked with exclusively in the past, both experienced and not, Buho de la Garra organized key areas for the heroes to keep under surveillance. These heroes included golden age heroes such as Comet Woman, Electricute, Hot Headed, and Imperial Rocket. Together, these heroes called themselves The Olive Branch, though the name was just to signify that they were working cohesively, and not a sanctioned supergroup. For the next three days, the task force did the best they could to get L.A. undercontrol, though must of the times, their efforts were proven to be in vain.
On June 7th, Buho de la Garra receives word that the riots have spread from Mexican American neighborhoods to Black-American neighborhoods, in specific, the one where The Blue Room was located. On his lonesome, Buho de la Garra stormed into the neighborhood and fought his way to The Blue Room to make sure that Hosanna was alright. Though The Blue Room was raided and destroyed, Andres found Hosanna trembling in a secured closet. The two embraced and disclosed to each other that if there was ever a time to elope, this was it.
On June 8th, along with the help of superior military officials, the task force of heroes finally gained some lee-way in bringing L.A. back under control by prohibiting military from entering the city, and also banning zoot suits from being worn in public. This is also the day that Buho de la Garra tells his fellow task force heroes that the next day, he was salvaging what he could of his belongings and that he was moving to another city. He went on about leaving the city in more capable hands, as he felt he was needed elsewhere.
On June 9th, Andres and Hosanna said their goodbyes and headed for Paragon City in hopes of making a better life for theirselves. While they managed to get away from the racism which plagued Los Angeles, they quickly learned that Paragon City was a place with its own problems.
The couple finally arrived in Paragon City on June 12th and first stopped at the local courthouse to be married. Once they were married under law, the couple stayed in a motel until they could find affordable housing. Unfortunately, they lost mostly everything in the riots. Luckily, Andres had secured a fraction of his meager fortune and was able to buy a nice apartment in some housing projects that had recently been built to accommodate the influx of civilians that Paragon was receiving at the time, though Andres spent most if not all of his money on the new locale.
The neighborhood was beautiful and worth every cent. It was surrounded by open land and parks. The small little neighborhood had been named The Crescent after a popular Islamic hero named Crescent Moon Knight who drew his powers from the moonlight that seemed to flood the area on a full moon. He too, like Buho de la Garra, fought the injustices of segregation, but was killed when he fought a Nazi “Hero” who attacked Paragon’s Harbor along with a host of others.
Andres and Hosanna had begun to look for work, but had no luck due to their lack of education and decline in the job market in general. Andres told Hosanna that he could turn back to crime fighting, but Hosanna protested. Instead, she began to work as a singer at an inner-city night club called Queen’s Throne. Despite her protests, Andres decided that he could use his skills as Buho de la Garra to help the couple get buy, now expecting a child. Unfortunately for him, Statesman had been on patrol and stopped Andres in the middle of his thievery. Though he put up a good fight, Statesman overcame Buho de la Garra, and gave him some sound advice: Don’t rob on the Statesman’s watch. Andres broke down and revealed his story to the Statesman on how he was reduced from a prominent L.A. hero to a sniveling two bit crook to support his growing family. In the middle of his story, Statesman stopped Andres in the middle of this story informing Andres that he knew who he was and told him that if he wanted to be a real man, stop stealing from his own country and join the armed forces against a new threat; the Imperial Wind, a Japanese super-powered strike force.
Andres listened to the Advice of Statesman and informed Hosanna of his decision. Reluctant to be left home alone with a newborn on the way, Hosanna took comfort in knowing that they would no longer have to scrape by to make a living. Hosanna kissed her husband goodbye as he was shipped off to the Pacifice to assist Captain Volcano, a hero leading the resistance against the Imperial Wind.
While fighting the Imperial Wind, Andres encountered some of the greatest heroes that the U.S. had to offer. Of them was the first Comet Woman, who had also helped Buho de la Garra with the Zoot Suit Riots. The two form a close partnership that proves unshakeable during their stay in the Pacific.
While fighting the Imperial Wind, Buho de la Garra notices a familiar silhouette on the opposing force. Her fighting style was very similar to his sensei which he learned from during his stay in Japan nearly 10 years ago. Unfortunately for him, it was indeed who he thought it was. The Mysterious Mistress Murasaki was a world renowned martial artist who had developed her own deadly form called Purple Dragon. The Purple Dragon Style focused on hitting hard and hitting fast by focusing attacks on pressure points and making it seem that a person had super human qualities. Now that Mistress Murasaki worked with the Imperial Wind, Buho de la Garra knew that he would have to use most of his time fighting her due to being the one person who knew the secrets of the Purple Dragon Style.
Mistress Murasaki, an arch-villain in her own right, took great joy in fighting her former pupil. There were many times when Buho de la Garra provided her with more than a challenge, however, he would never stoop so low as to kill her. It was often suggested that Mistress Murasaki had a death wish which she was hoping Andres would grant her, but he always managed to avoid having to do so.
While her husband was off fighting what seemed to be a never-ending war, Hosanna continued to work as a nightclub singer until she became no longer able to work. She eventually gave birth to a beautiful baby boy and named him Jose. Though Andres wasn’t home for the birth, he was able to visit the hospital shortly thereafter. Shortly after giving birth to Jose, she became preganant again with a daughter this time, naming her Merce.
On August 6th and 9th of 1945, the U.S. dropped Atomic bombs respectively over the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Coupled with Japan’s surrender, this meant the end of WWII, though it was quite different in the eyes of Captain Volcano. For several months afterwards, the heroes continued to clash with the Imperial Wind. In 1946, the leader of the Imperial Wind, Lord of the Frosts, killed the hero, claiming a small victory though previously humiliated when the Japanese surrendered to the U.S. after the bombing. Andres was deeply broken by this, as he had been working with Captain Volcano since he joined the heroes in their fight in WWII.
Andres returned home. But things had obviously changed. The Crescent neighborhood had begun to industrialize, and the neighborhood was no longer a sight to behold. Not to mention, the Zigursky Penitentiary was build only blocks away fron the apartment. The area began to shape its way into the Brickstown of today.
Andres was able to come home and spend time with Hosanna and his two children. Realizing that he had missed out on part of the growth of his children, Andres mad a vow to not miss anymore of their childhood. Unfortunately, that time would be cut short be the super villain, Nemesis, who had seized Washington. Once again, Buho de la Garra was called back to action. Though wounded and beat up pretty bad, Andres once again proved victorious in the guise of Buho de la Garra.
The return of Nemesis led to many other Super villains coming out of the woodwork. Not to mention, his arch nemesis Mistress Murasaki had appeared in Paragon City. Hosanna asked Andres to give up his double life. Andres, in turn told Hosanna that Paragon needed him now more than ever.
In 1947, the couple gave birth to another daughter, Desiree. In 1948, Miguel was born. Luckily, Andres was around for these births, and the Alvarez family was seemingly closer than ever.
1956 saw the passing of the Might for Right act, which stated that super powered heroes were subject to be drafted at any time. Since Buho de la Garra had exclusively decided against registering with the city and revealing his secret identity, this put him at odds with the government.
However, the CIA still managed to draft Andres in the Cold War, and his reluctance to adhere to the laws of the city meant that he would receive unfair treatment. Already a minority hero, he also failed to register with the city. This meant that he would be sent to do deep undercover assignments that meant he would be away without seeing his family for long periods at a time, common treatment for those who did not meet the demands of the city. His time on duty was cut short in 1963 when a fight with a Soviet spy known as the Aleksi Starr led to Buho de la Garra’s strike team being compromised. Aleksi, who was a bladed weapons master, punctured Andres’ right lung. This injury put Buho de la Garra out of commission. Announcing his retirement, Buho de la Garra had Electricute, a hero he had become close with over the years and entrusted his secret identity to, fly him to his home after being treated at a hospital.
For the remainder of his years, Andres was considered unable to work, though that didn’t mean he stopped living life. Though his neighborhood was spiraling down the hill, he would often go down to the little patch of grass between the four apartment buildings in The Crescent and if he could get someone to listen to him, he would relay his stories about his times in the wars and of the riots. Though most people refused to believe that the fantastic Buho de la Garra was reduced to a looney geriatric in the ghetto of Brickstown, people never refused to listen to one of “Crazy Ol” Mr. Alvarez’s stories, no matter how inventive they may have been. It was even reported that Mr. Alvarez had quite a bit of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and would frequently run though the city pretending he was Buho de la Garra.
Due to sleep apnea, Andres Alvarez passed away quietly in his sleep on April 7, 1986. He was 68 years old. To this day, only a handful ever knew his secret ID. And even then, Andres had outlived them all, except for his Sensei and A\arch rival Murasaki Mikaboshi and his loving wife of 43 years, Hosanna Alvarez.

Super Powered Contacts
- Black Bobcat – One of the students to have studied under her grandfather, this vigilante took Adina in under his paw when she expressed a desire to walk in her father's footsteps. For the beginning portion of her career, Taloned Owl operated as his sidekick; she's since branched off on her own and forged a path on her own due to differences between the duo. While the two were not able to see eye to eye, they continued to work together frequently. When the Arch villain Hang Man murdered Black Bobcat's latest sidekick, Wildcat White, Black Bobcat left town to pursue hisself while Taloned Owl stepped up to the plate as one of the sole avengers of Brickstown. Rumours have begun to circulate that he's returned to the city, but Taloned Owl has of yet to see her former Mentor in the streets.
- Wildcat White – The second sidekick to be taken under Black Bobcat's paw, Taloned Owl and Wildcat White never got along. They often fought amongst each other, and found each other's method of working difficult to deal with. Nonetheless, Taloned Owl was secretely fond of the young sidekick and never wished harm upon him. It broke her heart to see his mangled body after the Arch villain Hang Man took his life.
- Comet Woman – After the first Rikti War, Adina Keen volunteered at one of business woman Mary-Kate McClare’s soup kitchens to feed many of the civilians who were left with nothing after the Devastating attack. At this particular event, Winter Maiden attacked. Under the guise of Taloned Owl, Adina helped Comet Woman overcome Winter Maiden and have since formed a reliable, unshakable bond.
- Sebastian Kain – Taloned Owl has been spotted with Mr. Kain on numerous occasions, both formal and informal. While the nature of their relationship has yet to be revealed, it is known that Taloned Owl won’t accept any of his “dirty” money, yet continues to work with him on frequent occasions.
- Psionic Gypsy – A former sidekick of Taloned Owl, Diedre was an orphan abandoned by her gypsy parents in her infancy. When the distress of the infant caused multiple ripples on the psychic plane, a group of Psychics found her. In an effort to keep the Infant loved, the psychics had the child placed in the home of a loving couple, John “Hephaestus” Jones and his wife, Vanessa. Realizing the potential of having a sidekick with mental powers, Taloned Owl decided to act as a mentor to Diedre, forming an unshakeable friendship despite their age difference.
Contacts
- Hosanna Alvarez – Adina’s grandmother and wife of the first Taloned Owl. She remains a constant reminder to Adina of how the area of Brickstown was prior to industrialization and the building of the Zigursky Penitentiary, and what Adina strives to make it once again. Hosanna provides a shoulder for he granddaughter to cry on, the voice of reason, and a homecooked meal whenever Adina is in need.
- John “Hephaestus” Jones – In her early years, Taloned Owl prevented a robbery on his technology shop and the possible murder of his wife. Since then, Hephaestus remains a priceless contact to Taloned Owl. His genius and superior knowledge of anything dealing with technology (both legal and illegal) has come to help Taloned Owl in more ways than one. It’s he who makes many of the popular gadgets that she uses today, and his wife, a renown costume designer for the stage, who designed Taloned Owl’s cat suit in it’s many incarnations. John took in and adopted Taloned Owl's former sidekick, Diedre, to raise her together with his wife.
- Det. Dai Washington – Adina and Dai formed a connection with each other when both of them were cadets for the P.P.D. Academy. They became quick friends, both coming from mixed heritage decent. They both were interested in each other, but their relationship never escalated beyond a flirtatious friendship.Their friendship was put on hold when Taloned Owl expressed a desire to work outside the law. Dai remains one of the closest people to Taloned Owl, and perhaps the only person to see her for what she truly is. Taloned Owl relies on him for information in Police Files and information on cases, both past and present.
- The Eyes of the City – A mysterious man who came into contact with Taloned Owl offering information on the latest valuable shipments of Independence Port, expensive artifacts in the city museums, to the latest activity of The Dedovics. She later discovered that he was in fact Billionaire Donny Wayne who tried his attempt at heroism but failed after his back was broken in combat with a super strong villain. The two work together on business terms where he makes a request and she fulfills it for a fee. He has expressed a romantic desire in Taloned Owl, though she continues to deny his advances.
- t3H sH0cKz0rZ – When Taloned Owl began to crackdown on Freakshow activity in the area, she came across a shrimpy kid amongst the faction. Having saved his but on a variety of occasions, he remains a valuable informant when it comes to the streets gangs of Paragon City.
Adversaries
There are many antagonistic forces that Taloned Owl often Battles. Those forces include but aren’t limited to the following:
- Mistress Murasaki – Mistress Murasaki is Taloned Owl’s most prominent Sensei during her sabbatical. Murasaki is the same woman who taught Buho de la Garra and is also the one responsible for his retirement. After teaching Taloned Owl the martial art form, she would often reappear to “test” Taloned Owl. This was actually fueled by her desire for an honorable death at the hands of one of her favored pupils. Taloned Owl actually defeated Mistress Murasaki for good when Taloned Owl kicked her down an elevator shaft filled with Amethyst shards and explosives. This occurred when Mistress Murasaki took an office building hostage, prompting Taloned Owl to call up a Task Force.
- Lady Yuriko – The daughter of Mistress Murasaki, she never quite achieved the favor of her mother. Se was subject to physical and mental abuse by her mother, especially in the presence of Taloned Owl. Throughout the years, she became obsessed with proving to her mother her ability to achieve master status. Unfortunately, she was always second best in her mother’s eyes. After her mother’s death at the hands of Taloned Owl, Lady Yuriko has appeared with one goal in mind: To defeat Taloned Owl and to prove to herself that she is not a failure. Lady Yuriko is the current leader of the Circle of Twelve.
- The Dedovics – A prominent Russian Mafia in the city of Paragon, operating mainly outside of the Brickstown area. The Dedovics have been instrumental in the death of Taloned Owl’s family. Taloned Owl has made it her personal goal to shake the very foundation of the Dedovic Cartel. Taloned Owl hasn’t always found it easy, due to the Dedovics frequently breaking out thugs from the Zig, and hiring super powered menaces as their body guards. Despite this, Taloned Owl persists in her effort to destroy the Dedovic Crime Empire.
Abilities
Taloned Owl took a sabbatical after leaving the Paragon Police Department. During which, Taloned Owl studied severa Martial Art forms in addition to the mysterious and deadly form she learned from Mistress Murasaki. Taloned Owl has studied the Rake Fist form, Eagle Claw, Ninjutsu, White Crane Style, Northern Praying mantis, and a preference for a stylized Capoeira. Taloned Owl has expressed that she often moves to look almost like a feral beast in combat. She has stated that using such a combination keeps her foes on their toes.
Equipment
Taloned Owl’s notable arsenal includes three key items:
Tech Goggles
Taloned Owl’s Tech Goggles are fashioned after the eyes of an owl and offer it’s aeare a multitude of functions. These functions include night-vision, infrared vision, a digital camera nestled in the middle of the bridge and a sonic amplifier allowing her to listen in on conversations at great distances. There is also a radio function that allows her to pick up on police signals and other signals she designates as well. The goggles themselves wrap around Taloned Owl’s head and have earphones installed in them. This device was constructed by techno-genius, John “Hephaestus” Jones.
Taloned Gloves
Taloned Owl’s talons are easily the most recognizable item of Taloned Owl’s arsenal. They are made from a patented metal alloy and are themselves a modified design on the talons that her grandfather used in the 1940’s. The Talons themselves are retractable and are released by a specific motion combination in the wearer’s wrist. While Taloned Owl prefers to use her martial arts skill in battle, there have been times where she has had to deliver a brutal slashing to a foe, though saved for times when extreme force is necessary. The Talons themselves can reach up to one(1) foot in length. They are typically used for wall climbing. In both index fingers, nestled next to the Talons are complimenting lock picks.
Utility Belt
At any given time, Taloned Owl’s belt may be equipped with the following:
- Grappling Hook
- First Aid Kit
- Cell Phone
- Shuriken fashioned after Owls
- Exploding Shuriken fashioned after Owls
- Caltrops, also fashioned after Owls
- Bullwhip, a homage to her childhood comic hero, Catwoman. She rarely if ever carries this.
