Tankerette (Lyndsey McKinley) is a mutant superhero and character in the MMO City of Heroes.
History
Lyndsey McKinley had what would be considered an average childhood growing up in California. She played with her friends, went to school, loved her parents (who loved her back), and as she got older, started liking boys. It wasn't until her early teens that she started to experience early signs that she was different. While at the doctor's for a routine exam, the doctor was listening to her heartbeat with a stethoscope and noticed something...unusual. Concerned about what what he found, Lyndsey was referred to a specialist who upon examining her with an MRI, discovered that Lyndsey's heart had changed into what was described as a natural magnetic nuclear fusion reactor. What caused the change was unknown at the time; but it wouldn't be the first time such a discovery was made. Soon, reports from all over the world were coming in about other children like Lyndsey with similar mutations. What made these children unique was that all of them had been born within the same year.
While the scientific community was abuzz with this latest discovery, things began to go from strange to worse for Lyndsey. Shortly after her new fusion heart had fully developed, she began to suffer from intense physical pain throughout her body, starting with painful muscle spasms and sudden growth spurts that left her literally tearing through her clothing unexpectedly. She was brought to a special institution that possessed facilities for aiding meta-humans with developing powers overcome early problems. For Lyndsey however, no amount of pain medication she was given could help with the changes her body went through. Even the needles the doctors used to administer drugs to her ended up breaking on her skin.
After weeks of the painful transformation, the pain throughout Lyndsey's body finally ended; but the changes she underwent were drastic to say the least. She had grown a full foot in height and the bone, skin and muscle tissues of her body had increased in density enough to given her greatly enhanced strength and resistance to injury. With the help of other metahumans working at the institute, Lyndsey was able to adjust to her great strength enough to handle objects without crushing them in her grasp.
As Lyndsey prepared to try to return to her life back home, several heroes from California's main superteam, the West Coast Sentinels, approached her; offering her membership in their team. They offered to help train her in the use of her powers, while at the same time, she could help them to protect the region from super-powered threats. After some thought, she took the Sentinels up on their offer. She came up with a design for her costume and decided on the name Tankerette (after one of her teammates referred to as being "built like a tank").
As Tankerette, Lyndsey fought alongside her teammates against various threats to the people of the west coast, including rescue efforts after an earthquake caused damage to the city of San Francisco. Tankerette stayed on as a member of the West Coast Sentinels for three years before decided that she wanted to seek out other Nuclear 90 children like her. It was suggested that she should relocate to Paragon City on the East Coast, since it was really one of the major epicenters of metahuman activity in the United States. With the financial help of her teammates, Lyndsey moved across country to Paragon City, where she hoped to locate other N90's throughout the city.
Powers
Tankerette is a mutant who possess several powers stemming from her primary mutation, a magnetic fusion reactor heart; a mutation possessed by all members of the Nuclear 90. The energy from this reactor is channeled internally within her body, enhancing her physical attributes. Tankerette's bone, skin and muscle tissues are three times as dense as that of a normal human being, granting her superhuman levels of strength and resistance to injury. She's capable of lifting weights up to 100 tons, under optimal conditions; and she's able to leap up to 2 miles using her powerful leg muscles. Tankerette's skin is highly resistant to small arms fire and projectiles, and can even withstand damage from extreme fire and cold with no long-term effects.
