Character History

Early Life

The Hero commonly known as The Assister was born as William Jacksby in Owensboro, KY on January 27th, 1988. His parents, Carl and Rachel, were a somewhat wealthy family and had William as their only child. For much of young William's life, he was spoiled and never had to work. Gifted to be naturally intelligent, the unknowing mutant never had trouble from school, either.

Unlike some mutants, William's mutations did not manifest in any overtly visible way. This, combined with a lack of any truly stressful experiences in the majority of his life led to none of the Jacksby family knowing about his abilities until the age of 19, after Willaim had gone on to college.

College Years

William's natural intelligence and pampering parents meant that for the entirety of elementary, middle, and high school he had to put in minimal effort for decent grades. After heading off to college, however, this streak made a drastic change. William's lazy, "party all the time" type of lifestyle landed him failing grades in two of his classes during his very first semester. The Jacksbys were not pleased, but didn't chastise their son for this, instead only encouraging him to stay and attempt to fix things during the next semester.

Having to actually put in an effort for the first time in his life, William was dismayed by all of the remedial classes and work he had to engage in. During one particularly strenuous night of studying, the thought occurred to William that at that very moment, he wanted nothing more than some Arby's. To his surprise, no more had he thought this than he was actually at the on-campus Arby's! The range was limited, but he could teleport! Faced with this revelation, William was curious just what else he could accomplish.

Move To Paragon

After having himself examined at the nearest hospital the next day, William became aware of just what all he could do. Wanting desperately to get out of college, the young man made up his mind to travel to Paragon City. He'd heard about it on the news and decided it was as good of an idea as any. Maybe he could make a living there. So, taking all of the money he had out of his personal bank accounts, he gradually teleported himself all the way to The City of Heroes.

Once there, the first thing he did was pay to have a costume tailored. Afterwards, he managed to strike a deal with the Freedom Corps: help out in exchange for rent and a bit of food money. After a bit of searching, William was able to get a place to stay with two other young men, and adopted the name The Assister.

Personal Life

Currently William lives in an apartment with two roommates. Both are "normal" young men attending a nearby college. He rarely interacts with either of them, and they seem to prefer it that way. Both seem to look down on him a bit for being a college dropout and think his hero life is strange at best.

William is also still trying to decide how to deal with his parents. They know he is alive and well, but are obviously upset with him for dropping out. They also fear for his safety, considering he is now in dangerous situations every day. He tries to speak with them as little as possible, thinking that this is his chance to start his life over again correctly, without relying on them for everything. Unknown to William, they are planning on hiring someone to track him down and possibly bring him home.

Hero Life

The Assister works for The Freedom Corps on occasion in exchange for rent and living expenses. Mostly they allow him to freelance in whatever fashion he wishes, as long as they continually get reports of him actually doing some kind of good for Paragon City.

The Assister is not a well-known name in Paragon City. This is partly due to the fact that he is new, but also because of his more supportive rather than active role. In a considerable change from his previous selfish nature, he doesn't seem to mind at all if others take the spotlight, and in fact often seems to try his best to make those he works with look as good as possible and to stay out of the way himself.

After seeing a few operate, William decided it was time for The Assister to join a Super Group. After all, he works best with a team. Having attended a party thrown by the Galacto-Rangers, he became interested in them. After a bit of discussion with one of the higher ups, he was invited as a new Ranger. Shortly afterward he realized that large-scale group heroism didn't agree with his own style, and he became a freelance hero once more.

Appearance

As only a mutant, and not one with a mutation that alters his physical appearance, The Assister himself looks fairly normal. He stands at around 5'7", and so is actually somewhat short compared to many Heroes. He has gained a somewhat decent amount of muscle since taking up the Hero business, but is still a little on the skinny side. He often styles his hair in an "emo" way, liking the hairstyle and not really caring about the stigma attached to it. Thin, square-rimmed glasses always adorn his cheerful, young face. Outside of his costume, The Assister is rarely seen without a pair of Chuck Taylors and a shirt with a symbol or saying that he hopes someone will find offensive or funny. Though often only noticed when he is in costume, The Assister's hands begin to glow blue whenever he uses his powers for an extended period, ranging from a faint to a very bright glow in proportion with how heavily he has been using his powers.

The costume of The Assister contains a surprising amount of symbolism and meaning, considering its generally aloof owner. The black to white gradient has two meanings: to symbolize that even in the darkest hour good can triumph, and to signify the change of heart The Assister himself had from being a worthless dropout to an unlikely hero. The color scheme of primarily light blues and whites, with few stark and sudden contrasts makes his costume stand out significantly less than those of most Heroes. This fits in with his "support" type of role. Not only does it mean he is less likely to be noticed than his contemporaries by fans, but it also makes him a less enticing target for enemies. Aside from the cape, his costume has also been designed with ease of movement in mind.

Recently he has decided to create a second costume with a considerably darker color scheme, and involving less spandex. After being made fun of for his usual costume, The Assister hopes he can gain a bit more respect from his fellow hereos with the new one. This and his old costume now both incorporate special gloves designed by and given to The Assister by the Freedom Corps which enhance his powers.

Personality

The Assister is a natural joker. He makes wisecracks at the expense of practically anyone and anything, even during dangerous situations. To an extent, this is a coping mechanism on multiple levels. His life has made such a radical change since arriving in Paragon and he is in completely unfamiliar territory. Laughing at the complete absurdity of the situations he now finds himself in is just his way of dealing with it. It's only natural that this defense is carried over to situations in which he might be harmed.

After making his recent realizations and major changes to his life, The Assister has come to discover that he really is a good person on the inside, he just had it buried under a few layers of selfishness and cowardice. Now disgusted with the person he used to be, The Assister seems to be trying to "make up for" his past by helping others in the now. Still, he hasn't been able to completely stop the part of him that enjoys partying and women just a bit too much...

Despite it not being obviously so, The Assister's mutation allows him to control localized gravitational forces, ones which seem to have a greater effect on light than normal. Using these forces in creatively placed ways, he is able to redirect attacks targeted at himself and others, creating a sort of "force field"-like effect.

The first power The Assister ever discovered was teleportation. He is capable of teleporting not only himself, but others as well. This is accomplished by converting the particles of his own or another being's body into light, and selectively pulling only these particles to a specialized gravitational force generated at the desired destination.

He may also fire "beams" of sorts of concentrated, heavy gravity. These beams can apply pressure to enemies to damage them, and will also negatively effect the liquid in their ears to slightly disorient them. This, in addition to the gravity pulling in nearby light to obscure vision, can effectively lower the accuracy of his targets.

Recently he has discovered a method of using his power to selectively draw light away from individual beings, causing them to become practically invisible.

Maintaining several of his powers at once requires a high amount of concentration, but this never seems to be a problem for The Assister. While not specifically a part of his mutation, his natural intelligence certainly helps in this. Furthermore, he has practiced using all of his powers to such a point that generating any of the forces he can takes no more effort than moving one of his body parts would.

The Freedom Corps designed special gloves for The Assister which enhance his powers. After they grew naturally, it was discovered that his powers work best when he focuses them from a specific point. Naturally the easiest place are his hands, further evidenced by the fact that the evolution of his power had begun causing his hands to glow when used. Taking note of this, scientists developed gloves that could more easily channel the force from his hands.

Other than his mutation and naturally above-average intelligence, The Assister has decided to try and compensate for his losses somewhat. After actually working out a bit and having to exert himself while in harm's way on a few missions lately, he has actually developed a slightly above-average physique for a human. This won't help him fight-off truly powerful opponents, but it should be taken into account, if for no other reason than it is sort of a personal victory.

The infectious sense of humor in any situation of William carries over to his duties of The Assister, along with a near endless stream of pop culture references. His intelligence and tendency to stay at the back of a fight, able to see everything going on, lend themselves well to developing tactics. Some combination of this tends to have a positive effect (if they aren't annoyed by his jokes, that is) on the Heroes he works with. There is much to be said for a moral boost.

Although he does not have any sort of innate resistance to mental abilities, The Assister's mutation reacts to certain powers oddly. The Assister gets extremely painful headaches whenever someone attempts to read his mind or scry him. Currently he is unaware of this connection, thinking his recent headaches to be natural.

William has a tendency to sit quietly in Pocket D and listen to the conversations of others. This, combined with being a Galacto-Ranger, having a decent amount of friends, and his ability to turn invisible means that The Assister knows more than a little about a lot of people. He doesn't outright spy, and doesn't know any extremely sensitive information, but it isn't out of the question for him to be able to name almost every person in the D along with their most common powers and maybe even a few people they associate with.

Enemies

So far, The Assister has kept a rather low profile. As a result, he has no known major enemies as of yet. With his growing powers and smart mouth, however, it is only a matter of time.
