It was apparently his time to go. 3 months was what the surgeons told him. 3 months left to live. The cancer spread so fast they couldn't catch it in time. Darrius Jones lay in his hospital bed mindlessly staring at the ceiling, with disbelief that Leukemia was soon going to end his life. His wife and 4 year old daughter sat by his bedside, weeping and pleading for his life to the doctors. There was nothing they could do short of radiation therapy and chemotherapy to dull the pain.

Unfortunately for his weakened family, Darrius, or DJ as he is sometimes referred to, wasn't a fighter. He was a runner. So of course, he thought that running away from his family in his last few months of life was the best course of action he could possibly do; he didn't want his family to grieve his death. Selfishly taking his life into his own hands, he fled the U.S. to live out his life amongst his ancestors, in Africa.

3 months isn't a long time by any means, but either by luck, chance, or other mystical force, he found and settled upon the almost invisible town of Shantiki nestled on the southern shores of the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. Becoming infatuated with the town and its people, DJ decided that Shantiki would be his final resting place. During his time, he befriended the town's shaman, a man by the name of Mobutu Gizenga (it is suggested that Gizenga is known as Shamanu in Paragon City). Two months had passed and DJ opened up to Gizenga, telling him of his soon to end fate. As luck, chance, or other mystical force would have it, Gizenga knew of the ancient ritual used only once per century to produce a man of great power only talked about through myths and bedtime stories. This was the mantle of The Cape Lion, a legendary being of great prowess rarely seen or heard from. Just as the animal he is named after, it is presumed extinct in the wild.

Engaging in a ritual that included consuming many wild herbs and the heart of a Cape Lion, DJ spent an entire night intoxicated under a mystical power taking hold of his body. However, he woke up the next morning feeling more alive than ever, free of any and all of his Leukemia symptoms and completely cured of his cancer. The ritual bestowed him with the power of infinite health among other things, and he thankfully and willingly learned an ancient African martial art that assisted in completing his transformation into The Cape Lion. Darrius accepted his new identity and almost entirely abandoned his old one, and under advice from his new mentor, Gizenga suggested he take his mantle to the City of Heroes and live the life of a legend.
