OOC History

The Penitent Arrow came out of the release of the Cyborg Pack. I bought it, and really enjoyed the new pieces it offered. But, because I didn't want some cheap character with most or all the cyborg pieces (like too many around that time), I sat around experimenting and thinking of concepts. I have always wanted to do an archer Green-Arrow like toon, but never got one off its feet. After an hour or so of experimenting I found the sweet spot: An ex-Wyvern Cyborg Vigilante. There's still a lot of fleshing out to do, and I hope this article gives you, the reader, a good idea of who the Penitent Arrow is.

History

Childhood: A Great Loss

Simon Lee Gabriel was born to a John and Cindy Gabriel in Kings Row, Paragon City. A lower-middle class working family in the Gish, Simon had it hard in his early years. He attended Kings Row Elementary.

Simon was a bright kid, and though he was never the smartest kid in class, he was often the most clever and agile, able to trick and evade anyone who confronted him. He grew up reading and watching and reading tales of swashbucklers like Robin Hood and vigilantes like Batman, idolizing their rebellious flair and their sense of justice. As his experiences in the Gish increased, he became increasingly disdainful of authority and the police in particular, as more and more of his friends got in trouble. The most mischievous of which, Jakob Park, would become his best friend throughout Junior High and High School.

Kings Row

His father was a strong and willful person, rivaled only by his mother. Though, in a neighborhood full of people who don't take "no" for an answer, that can be more of a problem than a blessing.

Adolescence: Bad Influences

After Junior High, Simon's teenage years were quite tumultuous. Like many in the neighborhood, he fell in with a bad crowd, namely Jakob's crowd. He stole, he drank, he vandalized. Fed up, his mother made him get a job, and kept him on a short leash, hoping she could curb his rebelliousness, and keep him from becoming one of the same thugs who had killed his father. Though he still took every opportunity to escape her authority, he took a job at a local gun repair shop. This was his first meeting with the weapon he would come to admire more than any: the bow. Fueled by romantic fantasies sparked in childhood, Simon began practicing whenever he had time, effectively cutting short his time spent causing trouble. It also distanced him from his friends.

Simon had many run-ins with the police in his younger days.
Simon would often practice with a longbow in the back-lot of the repair shop.

His friends were quickly spiraling into strong criminal tendencies, and his best friend Jakob began spending time with the Skulls. Jakob didn't look fondly upon Simon's job and archery. He tried to persuade him to join the Skulls with him. Simon, finally content to just go to school, go to work, and chill with his new hobby, refused. Enraged, Jakob stormed off to their warehouse without him.

When returning from work one night, he was assaulted by a member of the Skulls. Simon was able to evade most of the shots, and he fought back. He was shot in the arm and chest, but before the would-be killer could finish him off, he was taken down by PPD officers who had rushed to the scene in response to phone calls. Simon was rushed to a hospital, and barely made it. He remained in critical condition for a week, and recovered a month later. It was later determined that it was Jakob who attacked him.

After that, his life was rather uneventful. He graduated 10th in his class, and lost most of his friends to street gangs. He never won any scholarships, and remained at home in Kings Row for another year.
