Basic Information
Little is known about the enigmatic military organization known as The Spear. Most don't know it exists, and most who DO know it exists have little idea of its true capabilities or numbers. Rumors about its actual origins and intentions vary, from a little known division of Vanguard, to the militaristic arm of a secretive global organization.
Formation
In actuality, The Spear is the title of a certain Sgt. Maris's military organization. At first, they were simply a small cluster of mercenaries and ex-military types, used for little more besides keeping tabs on the Isles and preventing things from getting too out of control during her absence. After a group she had ended up working for drove her out with petty bureaucracy and, in her words, "Too many fucking questions", she returned to the Isles, and began to reorganize her little PMC into something lighter, looser, and much, much more efficient. Cutting the "chaff" loose from the organization, and simplifying the chain of command, she began to recruit from new sources. Dissatisfied Council officers, shattered Malta cells, and even weary veterans of the Vanguard, all drawn by the promise of steady pay, as well as a leader that wouldn't demand more besides that they do their jobs, and do them well. The Spear's numbers are quite tiny compared to the majority of organizations in the Isles, numbering little more than a few hundred. Each of these men, though, are some of the best trained, most experienced, and best-equipped soldiers in the Isles.
Equipment
Commissioned from an unknown source, the Spear's standard issue combat suit provides respectable protection without limiting mobility. A full body exoskeleton, the suit is armored with lightweight yet highly resilient composite plates, and lined with a thin layer of non-newtonian fluids underneath the basic layer of highly insulating, tear-resistant synthetic fabric, intended to nullify or lessen shocks. A layer of artificial muscle fiber augments the wearer's physical abilities, and the helmet protects against environmental threats while providing multiple vision options.
The Spear's arms are nothing to scoff at either. Besides using a massive variety of next-gen small arms and heavy weapons, they've also had a few custom weapons commissioned. Notable examples are the "Boneshredder" light rail SMG, and some rather devastating Gauss rifles of unknown origin, said to be capable of punching through layered Impervium like it was paper.
Operations
Due to their small numbers and need for secrecy, the Spear never operates in large numbers. Their soldiers are trusted to operate alone or in small groups, leaving as little trace of their operations as possible. If forced to fight foes in force, they will utilize their intelligence division to both gather as much information as possible, and tilt the battlefield of choice to their favor. All of this is done according not so much to orders from HQ, as to the discretion and skill of the individual agent. It's said that during the few occasions they've had to gang up on an opponent, their leader, Anna Maris, is usually present. For all of the group's subtlety (learned from her mentor and his own loyalties), she will never back down from the belief that she MUST fight alongside her men.
