Origin
Puberty refers to the process of physical changes by which a child's body becomes an adult. During puberty, major differences of size, shape, composition, and function develop in many body structures and systems. Not to mention the odd mutation from time to time, in certain cases.
This process, the effect of eons of evolution, is no less painful or awkward now than it was thousands of years ago. Add to the procedure the pressures of high school, a growing inclination towards alternate lifestyles, and the onset of acne… and you have the recipe for ostracism.
It didn’t matter that in his chosen sport of football that he was considered a blue chip prospect coming out of middle school. He developed faster than most of his peers, and could outrun and outmuscle many of the varsity players as a freshman. All that mattered was the incident in the locker room, something about shower pranks and a 4-alarm fire, not to mention 2nd and 3rd degree burns in some cases.
Not for Casey. Casey was that prospect, the wonderkin, the outcast, and now mutant pyromanic who set ablaze half of the high school gym and locker room. His parents had tried to ignore all the signs that they already knew, but the surfacing of the mutant abilities was more than they could handle. Paragon City was the solution. The freaks all congregated there. Who would notice one more? So they shuffled through brochures, called in favors, and in a quick move of dismissal, shipped their son off.
And Now...
Now, he’s once again trying to fit in. At least here, when someone calls out “Freak!”, it’s not just his head that swivels. Prejudice and bias don’t fade away quickly, but within the new walls, Casey is trying to fit in, find a place, and discover himself. It is proving difficult, moreso than he had hoped. With his classmates and friends under attack at times, and he unable to help, his disillusionment grows.
Since graduation, he has come to terms with many aspects of his life. His participation in the Next team is limited, which heightens his frustration, but he has found solace in revealing his greatest secret to a growing number of people in his life. Eventually, he hopes to come to a comfort level that will allow him to pronounce it to the group as a whole.
